Great story and an amazing world is let down by repetitive combat

Bioshock Infinite is set in the early 1900's, you play as Booker Dewitt, a young white man who has to go to the unknown 'sky city' of Columbia and bring back a girl to pay of his 'debts'.

The story in this game is great. Without spoiling anything, it is a very complicated and well pieced together story that has a much bigger plot to it than it lets on, but you discover this at the end. The characters in this game look great with very believable dialogue that immerses you into the story. This leaves you caring for Elizabeth a lot ( i did anyway ). Elizabeth is the girl that you have to bring back from Columbia to pay off your debts.

The best thing about this game is the city of Columbia. It is beautiful and so realistic that it makes you believe this place could exist.. Even though it's in the sky. There is so much detail in the city from the Aryan propaganda posters, to the people going about their lives and taking part in fair activities. That is, until all hell breaks lose.

Columbia is run by a man called Comstock, a very racist man who portrays Columbia as a vision of Heaven and the white Aryan race as superior. You see this subject touched upon through-out the game and it creates big moral decisions and cause you to really think about the reality of Columbia. The game allows you to see very different sides of Columbia as at first you arrive and everything is great. All the white Christians are happy and marveling in the greatness of their race and religion. But at a later point you find yourself in the black slave area that is dirty and depressing, and it really allows you to think about these people in Columbia. It really touched my heart as it relates a lot to the Jews in Nazi Germany.

As great as this games story and setting is, there are some problems. The main one being, the combat. Ok so at first the combat was fun, the fast paced action of Elizabeth opening tears and bringing weapons in, her throwing you supplies, you zooming on rail lines and you using weapons and vigors ( powers you shoot from left hand like fire or electricity ). But, after a few hours the combat went from exciting, to fun, to alright, to boring and then to annoying. It seems throughout the whole game everyone in Columbia wants to kill you and there are more enemies and more difficult enemies around every corner. It seems the only way to make it harder for you as the game went on was to throw more, harder and more frequent enemies at you again and again and again. THIS, got annoying. Im glad the game ended when it did, because the combat was getting far to repetitive.

That is the reason i enjoyed the first hour more than anything because you weren't under attack, and could just enjoy the beautiful city of Columbia.

With all this said i really enjoyed Bioshock Infinite, it is a great game but held very far back by the FPS mechanics and the repetitive combat. Maybe the developers should try a different game genre for the next Bioshock, maybe RPG?

And a little side note it wasn't as good as the 1st Bioshock..

Bioshock Infinite: 8/10
