Okay lone soldier, it's time to become a hero. You delve into excitement with a gun and a bionic arm. You're mission is to rescue hero soldier Super Joe who was captured by the Nazis. It's a side & vertical scrolling platforming action game, and my favourite title for the NES.

Your initial weapon is a standard one-shot-at-a-time rifle. As you progress through the levels you'll be able to find more weapons to aide you. These include the machine gun, the 3-way gun, and bazooka. You can also stock up on various equipment like a flare gun, bullet proof vest, or health pack. The selection of weapons and equipment adds strategy to the game, as you can only take 1 weapon and 1 piece of equipment with you at a time.

You'll also locate a number of different radio transceivers in the game. These radios can be used in communication rooms, but only certain radios will work in certain rooms. Once in the comm-rooms you'll be able to receive important messages from your allies and wire-tap enemy communications to hear helpful hints about navigating the map.

You map is your guide to the levels ahead, and where you can stop off to potentially receive new equipment. It also make it possible for you to revisit levels if you wish, and even skip levels in some cases. On the map you'll also see trucks driving around. If you encounter one of these trucks you'll go into a short, top-down perspective level where you'll have to rush through an onslaught of enemy soldiers. This is also where you can earn continues for use should you lose all of your lives. Hidden shortcuts are also available on the map, if you know where to find them.

The levels get big and challenging while providing a decent variety of enemies and environments. Area's include military complexes, jungle-like environments, dark caves, and more. To assist you in the ever increasing difficulty level you can collect these green pills (or canisters) that are dropped randomly after killing an enemy. Collect enough and you'll get a new hit point added to your health bar. Each new hit point also takes longer to collect than the last.

Your biggest asset is of course your bionic arm. This arm can be used to swing, push, grab, & especially pull yourself up to higher levels & platforms. After a little practice you'll be swinging smoothly from platforms like a monkey. Your arm will also serve to knock back bad guys, and snag power-ups from a distance.

A must have for any action-lovin' NES owner out there.
