Cons: Short game, no "add on missions", There is only so many weapons..
Bionic Commando was one of those cult classics on the Nes, although the game was also on many other consoles, like gameboy, Arcade, and others.. many people remember the game on NES. To us Americans this game was a big hit, guns, military theme.. Killing Hitler.. But over in Japan it was not a hit at all, or at least not nearly as it was over in the states. Since Capcom was a company based in japan, making any more movement in the series seemed stupid for them. However times have changed, and after 20 years we get 2 new Bionic Commando games, and this is the 1st.
If you have not realized, Bionic Commando Rearmed is in fact a port of the original, it may be unnecessary to point it out. However i just wanted to get that out of the way. Bionic Commando itself is a platform/action game. Like most old School games, it was a side scrolling game, where you advance in a semi linear pace. However unlike most games, Bionic Commando does not feature a jump button. Instead you have an Bionic arm. Not only that, you use that to get past certain things, and make your movements throughout the level. It may seem like no big deal today, but 20 year ago.. it must have been something.
The story in Bionic Commando focus you on "Radd" Spencer. He is part of the military, and is his mission to track down a find Super Joe, who has gone missing. Along with that he must take down the Nazi, or in Rearmed the "Imperials" As you progress you find out more of whats going on, like most games.. I find it to be nothing special or original, but the cool thing is that the game kinda(i stress kinda) lets you pick and choose levels you want to play. You have an over world map and you can choose your location.
Bionic Commando's Gameplay is really something, besides with all the possibilities you can use the arm, you also get a gun, grenades, and different power ups. You can use the arm in other ways other then swinging. You can lift things up, you can wack enemies with it. (on invasion levels) you can pick up people, and you can pull switches to unlock puzzles.
The Guns are standard. You have a regular "Contra" Gun as i like to call it, you have a laser gun, and machine gun, and shotgun, and a deflector gun. Where it bounces off walls and such.. you also get a homing Rocket launcher, and a standard Rocket Launcher (semi homing)
Grenades work like normal grenades, but with all these different weapons. They are full ammo.
Bionic Commando looks much better, plays much better. And by that i mean the flow. The original had some rough spots as far as combat goes, this game really smooths it out. The Boss battles are great, better then the old ones. There is actual challenge or some obstacle to get by when hacking the enemy base, in form of a puzzle game. There is Co-op. This is very fun! and there is challenge mode for the hardcore players. Who want to try some of the harder challenges.
Overall This game is a must download for any fan of the series, or someone who is interested in the series. If you never tried it out, you are missing out
Breakdown
Gameplay: New Boss battles, better swing controls (wtf is up with GS, the controls are easy!) and better flow
Graphics: One of the best looking Arcade games, hands down!
Sound: Great, great remixes of classic music.. who could not love the main theme of bionic commando, classic
Value: The game itself is short, but multiple modes, Co-op and Online makes the game well worth the small price tag
Overall: Buy if you have not, or at least play the demo.. Its a great, great game! I am a fan.. Can't wait for the Xbox 360 "console" Game!!
