This game looks like it is going to get buried. And that's a shame. This game doesn't take a whole lot of risks, but it is executed very well. Seems like that doesn't count for much. If a game doesn't do something "new," it seems like it is doomed to be written off.

I've read that the Japanese audio is only for the japanese characters in the background (NPCs) and that the main characters only speak in English.

Yeah, but if you like shooting robots, then any score is going to go up by at least 1 point...which is going to be just about everyone who has been following this game.
Take away all the robots in Vanquish, and that game would be mediocre at best.

I got it today; the demo did enough for me to know I'd enjoy it. Usually I find all-mech foes a bit dull, but the damage and particle system on this makes it feel surprisingly violent and action-packed.

I absolutely love this game. It really took me by surprise at how good it was. I was ready to write it off the second I saw it but I'm glad I played it because I was hooked. First Japanese game I've enjoyed in a very long time.

Especially when GoW isn't the first 3PS with a cover mechanic, just perhaps the most well-known one. As I understand it, the devs admit to being influenced by several other titles, such as Namco's Kill.Switch.
On another note, I'm surprised comparisons to Dead Space haven't cropped up, what with dismemberment being a factor for the human-sized enemies (protip: take the heads off the heavy gunners for best results).
