Loved "Quantic Dream" since Fahrenheit: Indigo Propecy & I hope they never stop doing what they're doing for games

I'm stoked this game is being made.

Unfortunately, in Heavy Rain, David Cage revealed himself to be a mediocre writer: logic issues, plot holes, & so on (the narrative 'cheat' employed in Heavy Rain is gimmicky on the level of having the whole story be a dream and no self respecting writer, much less one who actually understood who-dunnit conventions, would have done it). Very few artists can be both producer/director & writer. You can name the successful ones on one hand, while big names who tried and failed are innumerable. George Lucas comes to mind.

@Xenrathe Totally agree with you. Although I loved Heavy Rain, the major plot holes seriously detracted from the experience. I hope the missteps of Heavy Rain are fixed in this game.

Now that is what I call CREATIVITY.

We see a lot of FPS lately. It's nice to have an original and unique game every once in a while.

I always appreciate artistic developers because they're never afraid of creating different games than the others. I will give this game a chance, just like I did with Fahrenheit 9/11 & Heavy Rain.

if in reality there's a car pile up in the back ground and fire flaring I could "imagine" something exploding , I would still get it if there was not a loud "boom" ? in TR they had Lara running and jumping pieces of bridge and explosions , which added a hurried up frightening effect , but , were they really needed , I don't think many people even paid attention ? tomato tomatoe !

They went from Indigo Profecy to Heavy Rain and now back to the supernatural theme. What is the big picture?

Albelnox0
Albelnox0

@capyvaraepg correction they went from Omikron the nomad soul filled with gameplay which was great for its time, to indigo prophecy, to heavy rain, to beyond.

The idea of adding explosions to appeal to "gamers"... what an incredibly stupid thing to ask. Yeah maybe you can get the attention of mentally challenged dumbasses by adding explosions everywhere for no reason.

It still looks like they took Fahrenheit, shaved out all the investigation parts and made a game only about the supernatural flying people bit. Some people might also call this the "bad part" of Fahrenheit.

David Cage is one of the view developers that I would say their games are must buys before they're even out.

Can't wait

I enjoyed Heavy Rain and if I recall I played through it more than once. I'll be picking up Beyond: Two Souls as well.

At least he's doing something different. In a month where people are saying "meh" to new God of War and Gears of War games, that alone warrants praise. I just hope they aren't committing financial suicide by releasing at such a busy time.

Variety is always good. I'm cautiously optimistic about this one; despite being a Cage detractor for the most part, I do hope this sells well, for the sake of the industry.

The dispropotional amount of hate David Cage gets really disgusts me for some reason. I know it's just how the internet works, but still. He is a creator who is passionate about the medium he works within and has a vision for what he thinks would take it to the next level. You can disagree with that vision, but to hate him for it is frankly a bit silly.

@Sushiglutton  I agree with you that he gets a bit too much hate, but he does have a history for attracting negative attention to himself. If he had a bit more humility, people would like and respect him much more for what he does.

David Cage is a niche developer, who, in the past, had a habit of saying that every game needed to be more like his niche. Obviously, that's going to annoy people, even if his games are good for what they are. On the internet, unfortunately, mild annoyance escalates into disproportionate hate for absolutely no reason.

Again, that all being said, the last few interviews have shown a more held-back Cage, who now seems to realize that he's making a niche product. I think people will warm up to him if he keeps this up.

@unreal101 @Sushiglutton yeah i don't care about his persona, i just care about he's games being great, and heavy rain was great. one of my alltime exclusives ps3 fav.

@unreal101 @Sushiglutton Perhaps he has been somewhat obnoxious at times, but compared to the guys hating on him, he's far more fair and distinct.

It's kind of weird when more mature themes (which is what he is mainly propagating for) is considered niche in a medium imo.

unreal101
unreal101 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Sushiglutton   I wasn't really talking about maturity. When I said "niche", I meant that Cage's games are often nothing more than CGI movies, propelled along by quicktime events.... and that's perfectly fine, for the kind of game that Cage wants to make. However, for Cage to insist that we need to completely move away from traditional game formats (like FPS), to focus more on story, is a bit much for me - and many other people.

A game can be mature and still be a game. Just look at Witcher 2, Mass Effect,  Deus Ex, or even Spec Ops: the Line. All mature story lines, made to make the player think a little, but still wrapped up in traditional game formats that gamers want. Cage's products, in my humble opinion, aren't really games in the classic sense. Which is ok; however, for Cage to tell us that we need to take away what makes other games great, is simply arrogant and a bit stupefying. That's where the hate comes from.

I'm not seeing why everyone hates this guy. He doesn't seem that full of himself or anything. In any case, can't wait for Beyond: Two Souls. Looks like something different, and I enjoyed Heavy Rain.

unreal101

@SoNin360  He's much more humble and realistic in this video than I remember him being before. Mr. Cage has made some pretty grandiose statements in the past, like accusing literally everyone else of mediocrity, and saying that video game storytelling is held back by graphical technology.

Up to now, I've not been fond of Cage or his games; I played Heavy Rain, but it struck me as a game trying really hard to be a movie. That being said, he seems a bit more down-to-earth now, and I will definitely give Beyond: Two Souls a chance.

Sushiglutton
Sushiglutton

@unreal101 @SoNin360 Please link/quote to where he was "accusing literally everyone else of mediocrity".

He has never said storytelling is held back by graphics. His point was rather that you can convey a wider range of emotions using more detailed face expressions, and that this will impact the experience the player gets. I never understood why this was controversial.

unreal101

@Sushiglutton @unreal101  See, now I think you're just automatically invalidating good counter-arguments as "knee-jerk reactions", which is unfair.

Sushiglutton
Sushiglutton

@unreal101 @Sushiglutton That was a very provocative talk he gave, but he never accused everyone else of mediocrity. Some of the points he brought up are very controversial though, so I can see why peoples' knee jerk reaction is to go online and hate.
