Good controls, impressive graphics, and intelligent storytelling can improve just about any game--but a truly terrific cast of characters is hard to find. But it takes a lot of effort and care to craft a single character that can define an entire game and elevate it to levels that few others reach. It takes even more effort to create a single character memorable enough to be worthy of winning this prestigious award.

Our nominees include Isaac Washington from The House of the Dead: Overkill, The Maw from The Maw, Ezio Auditore da Firenze from Assassin's Creed 2, Yusuf from Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, and Ellis from Left 4 Dead 2.

    Ezio is one of the most surprising characters this year and i am not surprised that he won this title.

    Ezio should win the Reader's Choice because he's one of the best characters ever, due to his combat style and his friggin' awesome assassination gear (I mean stabbin' people with a poison needle? COOOOOOL) O_O!!!

    If he were on this list, I'd cast my vote on Cole McGrath. He should be on this list. I mean, what kind of a nominée is Claptrap?

    toss up between ellis, his comedy is very welcomed in the zombie apocalypse and ezio who is just bad ass but morrigan is pretty hot.

    Ezio is cool, but I think L4D2 would have won if it wasn't because of rochelle. Lol.

    Where is Alex Mercer?!?!?!?! He was the personification of badass this year!!!!!!!

    I personally despise Ezio but he was an interesting character so he gets my vote.

    Ezio is cool but I wouldn't find him a memorable character. There's been seriously lack of characters this year.

    Yeah, Nice job GameSpot! Ezio Auditore da Firenze was definitely a good choice. An amazing character in an incredible game. Even his name is awesome.

    I don't like Ezio. He's a good character, but he feels like a clone of other popular characters, so cliche. A guy who becomes an assassin, seeking revenge? I've heard that a million times.
    I haven't played AC2 though, so I'm probably wrong.
