Best Strategy Game

Few genres in gaming have expanded as has strategy in recent years. Strategy was once synonymous with PC gaming, with classics such as Command and Conquer, The Sims, and Sid Meier's Civilization leading the charge. Due to new innovations in control, such as the voice command in Tom Clancy's EndWar, strategy has since spread its wings to consoles and handhelds. From the living room or on an airplane, now any aspiring commander can lead a fledgling American colony, a World War II task force, a futuristic army of ground troops, and an entire galactic civilization into war--or peace, should you savor the art of diplomacy. 2008 best represents the growth of the genre, given that our finalists for strategy game of the year come from the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo DS. In the end, there could be only one winner. Fittingly, it was the grandest of them all.

ok.... wtf everyone?! sry C&C and Valkerie Cronicles wherent on there.... but who cares?! i dont! can you win in all those other games OTHER than killing your enemy down to the last basic unit who's in the deepest darkest corner of the map? no?! in SINS you can win through millitary (prefered), influence, and deplomacy. the AI is amazingly smart and has been updated. plus can you not just conquer regions or planets but star systems? up till 9 of them?! no. didnt think so and as one last thought i just read through like 4 pages of the posts and everyones like "SINS sucks, o! btw i havent played it...." play the game, fall in love and get the expantion. it IS game of the year. if you dont like it than you should have voted. sucks for you. SINS OF A SOLAR EMPIRE IS A GREAT GAME

Really a sight for sore eyes.

I think Halo Wars has opened the floodgates for crap console RTSs though.

As expected, the only real-time strategy game nominee is a PC game. It's going to be another millennium before you can properly play a real-time one with a gamepad.

(Halo zealots, you know you are rabid if you even THINK of giving me a demerit. Halo Wars isn't even out yet, you haven't even touched the beta and all you have tasted of Halo Wars are a bunch of carefully orchestrated videos by the developers. How many of you recall playing Dune 2000 on the PS2? It was horrible! Now imagine you get a bunch of Spartans killed because you can't coordinate them with other troops properly enough with the directional pad.)

(And EndWar fans, you have the Voice Command feature to help you. If you have only the gamepad, your territory would be a bunch of smoking empty craters.)

I didn't even realize Valkyria Chronicles wasn't here until I read some of the comments. It totally should be here. Well...or under RPG's. It was a strategy-RPG, right? Even though VC might be my favorite game of the year, Sins beats it for pure strategy, hands down.

I'm still waiting with a very very slim thread of hope that soon we'll see HomeWorld 3 up on this nominees list.
