Genre Awards

The 2009 awards break down the top games of the year into categories based on genre. As games grow increasingly diverse and inventive and incorporate multiple facets of various genres, it becomes harder and harder to assign them to a single category, but we've done so here to the best of our ability. Therefore, our awards represent the best game in the genre, and not the game that best represents the genre it's categorized as.

here is the crux of the matter.. how to judge. 2 points.
    - 1. Judge the games as is with out looking at last year, and compared to the other nominees. - - - - - - - -
    2. Keep in mind the previous games and judge the games on newness and judge them against the other nominees. - - - - - - - - - - - -

    - - - - GS clearly looks at freshness in the series. So if next year KZ2: wildfire comes out next year and only looks some what better even though other games may not improve in graphics it is highly unlikely for KZ2:wildfire to win!

What a mess!!! Sims 3 torn out to be a strategy game, wasn't "Sim" in Sims standing for Simulator?
And Dragon Age, was branded a loser because of its performance, not so hard game play, and lack of customisation and story/character development options? Come on people, I played DAO 4 times on, 3 on impossible, and trust me, playing without casters ain't that easy. Every time I played it I it was with different party taking different decisions that changed story by so far that it seemed as I was playing different game.
And in the end I'd like to mention that PC version is much more advanced in terms of graphic performance as well as gameplay possibilities, so please don't treat it the same as PS3/Xbox version. As I said in one of my previous posts, it would be like comparing Need for Speed Most Wanted on PC with the one on DS (check Gamespot ratings if you are interested).
Finally I believe that PS3/Xbox DAO could lose to Demons Souls, but the PC one is on the completely different level.

glynner08 Posted Dec 24, 2009 7:13 am ET I agree completely with everything and although I didn't play Killzone I can just see through clips that it is a much better game than MW2 (regardless of what people say) although the multiplayer I don't think is better than MW2 it still deserves the award

    ****************************************************************************************************************
K2's multiplayer was and is better than MW2's. It allowed for seamless transition from one objective to the next with 7 total objectives in a match. This made for some helluva battles as teams transitioned from one part of the map to the next assassination/tdm/S&D and S&R. I didn't even mention the Sabatuer class, Invisible Snipers, Spawn Tactician classes, Sentry and Air Bots. I'm sorry MW2 and its perks do not match up at all to K2. Also 16 vs 16 matches trumped anything MW2 had to offer. I am currently playing MW2 and am on my 2nd prestige. I really like the game a lot but it definitely does not compare to Killzone2's mp experience (imo). if you have a PS3 I would really advise you to get and play Killzone2. It set the standard for how FPS will go in the future.

maybe to squish everyone's disdain for their choice not winning GS and every site/mag Awards should have a rubric so people can see what was the standards for that award.

seriously what is the hype with uncharted 2 the 1 was so bad a nightmare just thinking about it and street fighter is by far the best this year for combo like and sry for dragon age origins fans but IT DINT reinvent anything new its the same old same old it had just been a while that such a game came out so get over it. gotta say sims seriously? too many kids playing games theyre trashing ratings.

    @Bowman king
It's difficult to tell from your post whether or not your insulting or Nintendo or supporting them, but whichever it is, I totally agree with you. Did you notice they didn't even notice they didn't mention Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It was definitely at least worth a mention, as IMO it was the best fighting game this year. No offense fanboys, but Street Fighter just doesn't to it for me.

THOSE ARE STRATEGY GAMES? What has gaming come to? My Gods...I knew it was bad, but this...this defies all notions of bad. For those games to be considered...even CONSIDERED for the title of best strategy of ANY year it show just how low a genre has fallen. Where is our next Homeworld? Our Ages of Empires? Of Wonders? Where are our Heroes? Our Disciples? Where is Earth and Moon? Where are the real gems?

To me killzone 2 was by far the best fps this year because overall they added some new aspects to the online multiplayer of fps. They took everything from Fps and made it better story is cool not the best was cool though and i enjoyed it. In terms of the dragon age origin, I though Demon souls was better to they did something brand new and made a name for itself. Its not that dragon age origin is bad it sure is not but demon souls just made a name for itself being dumb hard and the online is amazing i thought they did a good job recognizing some of the ps3 games quality.

Sims 3? Sims 3??? Sims is not a strategy game. I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous! I don't have anything against Sims, but giving them the award for "Best Strategy Game" is like giving Uncharted 2 the award for "Best Racing Game". Also, there are three solid contenders for the title (Empire: Total War, DoW2 and Dawn of Discovery) so I see no excuse for this, except them wanting to shoehorn Sims into a category somewhere and not being able to make anything better up...

As for the Dragon Age VS Demon's Souls, while I am a Bioware fanboy, the game lacked polish and was a bit dated in its design. It was still a great game, but not a default winner. I still think that it should have won, but I don't consider this a grave injustice.
