"The triumph of conquering a tough track, the thrill of tallying a speedy time, and the creative adventure of making your own track and playing the crazy creations of others all conspire to make this one super sequel." - Chris Watters
Spelunky? Seriously? I downloaded the demo yesterday and deleted it five minutes later. What a shame gamespot. You are no longer credible to me, boo game spot!
I wouldn't have picked the same games that GS has chosen in any of these catagories. Far Cry 3 and The Walking Dead are the real winners, IMO.
Still, Dishonored is an amazing new IP so I'm not mad that they won their awards.
What a mess, this arcade game won even the best platformer of the year just because GS doesn't wanna give it to Mario bros.
How about next year, have a Best 360 Indie Game category? I heard Penny Arcade's Rain-Slick 3 was good.
Wow, shocked to see Minecraft not even nominated, period. That game is everywhere and is the highest selling XBLA game. I honestly thought Deadlight was a really good game this year even though the story was AWFUL. Of course, there were other games like Jet Set Radio and Nights into Dreams but those are remakes so . . .
I gotta love this decision. Spelunky is my overall game of the year, actually, so here's to hoping it shows up in the GotY nominees.
OMG, these are the worst winners ever....your gonna tell me spelunky is better than the walking dead...wow, just wow
@mrsniper83 yeah, it is, it's is more fun to watch someone play Spelunky than to play the walking dead, let alone play it for yourself.
Spelunky is so addicting, I love the fact that every time you play you get a new experience with unique random levels.
@kwagmeijer That wasn't my point, but im smelling a lot of sarcasm comming from your previous comment so...yeah.
Really makes me want to play this "Spelunky" game, but I already know that since I didn't have a desire to play it before, this "award" won't make me change my mind.
wow...is that game actually good? i can't tell i've never played it, but still i think The walking dead should've won this.
This is pathetic. The only games that won are the ones Tom and Kevin have hard-ons over. No The Walking Dead wins = bullshit.
walking dead, such a chilling adventure didn't win anywhere....this is not acceptable...storywise no game even big names don't stand chance and this plenky spelunky whatever wins...this was unexpected
Hahaha, The Walking Dead is GOTY material on any platform but it absolutely crushed the competition on the XBLA. Not even having it win here is just absurd. The amazing moral choice dynamics combined with a dark, mature story in The Walking Dead loses to Spelunky - hilarious.
This should have been Walking Dead.
Mark of the Ninja should have been disqualified for having such awful voice acting.
@megadeth1117 Really? That would automatically remove every RE game every year it was nominated.
I just beat TWD and it's spectacular. Such an emotional game loses to.... Spelunky (and Journey on PSN). Lame.
Spelunky beat Walking Dead AND Mark of the Ninja? Wth happened with the vote on this one? Did not see WD losing this one, once again it's GS trying to be different from the pack, but they failed on this one. They did that on best Shooter too.
@Daian Gamespot isn't one person, its many people so your argument that "GS trying to be different from the pack" doesn't make sense to me
Spelunky won? Seriously? Over The Walking Dead? I don't know who the editors are, but shame on you. I like Spelunky and I've played it, but an arcade indie game should not have lost to something as incredible as TWD.
@Bayonetta2013 What Spelunky does for platformers is incredible enough to place it over TWD, and yes I've played both.
What Spelunky does for platformers? What The Walking Dead has done to gaming in general is going to be seen in the years to come. Its success hasn't gone unnoticed, and developers are going to be paying a lot more attention to the depth of their characters and put more emotion into the story. Spelunky hardly introduced anything new; it refined what was already established and made it into a fun game. That doesn't make it a great game. How you choose Spelunky over TWD is beyond me.
And what do you know, I played Spelunky, too.
@Bayonetta2013 I liked The Walking Dead a lot, but whatever it did for gaming is strictly through a narrative standpoint, and it did that at the cost of being extremely shallow. No doubt that I would like to see its storytelling implemented into other games. But the bigger accomplishment lies in successfully fusing that narrative with exceptional gameplay, and gameplay always trumps story when it comes to making a great game truly great. That's where Spelunky succeeds with flying colors. Spelunky is a game on the opposite spectrum. What it lacks in story it makes up for exceptionally in gameplay. It takes a relatively simple design and injects it with a ton of depth, inspiring the player to play unconventionally, making for a constantly rewarding experience. There's so much more to the game than meets the eye, and that's why I comfortably place it above The Walking Dead.
