Read the Review »Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
"There aren't many games that leave you contemplating and debating their story and worldviews long after the final set of credits has rolled. Virtue's Last Reward takes its place proudly among this crop of games." - Heidi Kemps
You fools, this is why there is a user choice award. So the game *critics* can honor innovation and the rest of us with nothing more than an opinion can award something appeasing to the masses. Contain your rage. And I commend you gamespot for choosing with integrity instead of picking what would be most popular. Kudos.
Wow. I literally just signed up to say this is the worst thing to happen to gaming since Diablo 3! Journey? Are you kidding me? And Far Cry 3 doesn?t even get a nomination? Journey has average (at best) graphics and virtually no user interaction.
I wish I didn?t have to sign up to comment. I do not want to support your subscriptions, but this list is poorly thought up and there is no way Journey is GOTW!!!
@JayTheGent Opinions like yours are what stagnate the video game market. You need to move forward. If the game is a sequel, it's almost guaranteed to have broken no new ground. Especially Fart Crap 3.
@TruthHurtsJay @JayTheGent i agree with you but don't say fart crap 3 your doing the same thing he is just appreciate good games i love journey and other innovative games like it but far cry 3 is top for me sequels dont mean its the same similar but not the same the differences with far cry 3 and 2 are huge not greatly game play wise but the story they tell and the characters you see and interact with such as vaas so all of you can argue opinions but just play the game dont repeat the same argument over and over and over again. did i ever tell you the definition of insanity?
This is the worst GOTY. Ever! Most games are better than this. I appreciate that it is a good game, for some, but not for me.
I haven't finish Journey so i can't comment too much but so far Journey offers me a very unique gaming experience. Congratulations to ThatGameCompany and Santa Monica Studio. But to me, Far Cry 3 and The Walking Dead are the best game of 2012.
Seriously?! Oh my word, what is wrong with everyone this year or rather last. I didn't play Journey or Walking Dead but I did play Dishonored, Far Cry 3, Assassins Creed 3, Max Payne 3 and a few more just to name a few and they were all brilliant!!!! Especially dishonored. And they mostly got brilliant reviews so I am very confused and annoyed and I'm not the only judging from some of the other comments. Were the votes rigged, only the online community voted or did they just think it was better than a lot of other brilliant games? Hopefully it's better this year
journey aye how much did the game company pay you guys at gamespot? the game looks very uninteresting and boring. bad graphics.
I'm super surprised at these reactions. Journey being game of the year makes almost too much sense. Best gaming experience of my life; I'm sorry but even doubting this choice is a bit disturbing.
So according to most of the "gamers" in here, GOTY is a game where you do the same stuff in almost the same way? ... boring
@Renato19684 Just curious to know..did you complete the game or even start it?
Yes, Journey is the best game of the year. That's why I love you guys so much. You always pick the best, not the easiest.
@Xehovah Easiest? I'm assuming you mean obvious pick (like Far Cry, Dishonored, etc.). Because if you mean easiest gameplay, you sir are confused.
I don't get why everyone is so disappointed. Journey was a good game and if I remember correctly, GOTY was decided by OUR votes and thus was decided by the majority of users. Rather, I am pleased with this outcome, but to each their own.
Wtf this is shit these are the same guys who chose super Mario galaxy over cod 4 bio shock and mass effect gamespot should be ashamed really they picked journey over games like assassins creed 3 come on mass effect is 100009000 times better then journey even walking dead is better then journey and spelunky and guild wars two I am more disappointed about the retared choices these imbeciles chose they don't make good choices and well I going to disconnect from gamespot alog with my 200 friends from school gamespot you suck and shall never revive a liking from me I have lost all respect for gamespot so I bid you a big failure for your decisions
Extreme disappointment in gamespot
My thought on gamespot is that I don't care what you say
You have lost all respect from me and I bid you many failures in your future
Sincerely a disappointed member
@wizardboyus Usually they have outlets for Laptops and ur devices. Plus I dont know of any laptops that would last 8 hours on a game like dishonored or Deadspace
Well, I tried the journey demo and it was like watching paint dry. I then forgot about it. I sprang for the full game as it was on sale and assumed I must be missing something. While it wasn't Paint Drying: The Full Version, and had it's moments, . . . GOTY? . . . Honestly? Well, par for the course for Gamespot. Since I've been on this site, their GOTY choices have produced some real head scratchers. The year that Crysis, COD4, Mass Effect, Portal, Bioshock and Rock Band came out they chose Super Mario Galaxy--which didn't even look as good as RE 4 which came out on an older system a year ealier. They chose MGS 4 over GTA IV. Demons Souls won over Uncharted 2 despite their scoring the former a 9.0 and the latter a 9.5. As much as I like what I've played of Skyrim, it's inexcusable DLC issues and bugginess across all platforms prevent me from calling it GOTY. My preference would have been Batman: Arkham City. If a game this short can be GOTY then all bets are off. Who knows, maybe the upcoming BL2 and ME3 DLC will be early 2013 contenders :P
The one that really deserves it is ME3. Journey is only one platform game, how it can be game of the year!!!
@Vitex2003 Yeah, gotta love how some $10 downloadable title, one that only lasts an hour or two, somehow manages to beat titles that had far greater quality content. Game Informer got it right this year... looks like the rest of 'em missed it by a mile.
@Egotte @Vitex2003 By no means did ME3 have greater quality content than Journey. It had more content obviously but more doesnt mean better. Went through both games and Journey deserves GOTY even though I have my own GOTY. Not sure if the reason you're mocking it is because you never played, but if it is you should check it out its really good.
@Sp0ilzbury @Egotte @rtircoklled @Vitex2003If we are simplifying games, then Journey is a game where a mute unknown creature runs across the desert towards the peak of a nearby mountain.
@Egotte @rtircoklled @Vitex2003
ME is just a turn based shooter with long cutscenes and RPG style decision making between the firefights.
TWD should of won its not a 30 min game and it has way more depth then journey its the clear winner to me especially cuz usually websites try and pick something unique well i guess journey is considered more unique so it automatically wins just like what happened on ign
Arkham City is a lot longer and far less backtracking. But I wouldn't play Arkham City until I have experienced Asylum! You get a Story Refresher at the beginning of Arkham City but it's so much fun to experience the story instead of just being told. You will also miss The Scarecrow Mission. So do yourself a favor and get both!
Gamespot you surprise me this is exacly the reason why I don't go on this site anymore because it's full of shit Encore!
Journey ???!!!! Is not fair , last year was so much better , i'm disappointed .
All of the games mentioned are great it really depends on the person who is playing if your into 1st person shooter it should be Far Cry 3.3rd person should be Mass Effect 3.If your into strategic RPG game Xcom is the geme for you. Thanks to all the Game makers you all did a Good job More games to come for 2013!!!.
I don't care about this voting, the only one I cared was Dubious Honors, What's wrong? Did the companies got angry?
Just like how they are doing the "what type of gamer you are" series, they gave the game to all the "introverts" out there. Including Gamespot themselves. It is a joke that Borderlands 2 and FarCry didn't even make the finals list. That in itself can not be taken seriously, let alone their choice for GOTY. To give it to a game that literally takes 1/100th of the time to make should be an insult to all the game developers out there.
@VikeWolf quality is more important than quantity. Who cares if a game is 30 hours long if those 30 hours aren't fun to play. Journey was as long as it needed to be in order to affect people deeply.
But Borderlands 2 & Far Cry 3 are still shooters, which are a dime-a-dozen. There's only one Journey.
@VikeWolf That's not really correct. One of my favorite games of all-time is 'To the Moon' which also didn't take multi-billiondollarcompanies & lots of time to create. Just the game itself is brilliant, just like this one prolly is though. From the ones I played I prefer dishonored, though.
