Portal 2

Editor's Choice Winner

Editorial Nominees

It's difficult to imagine a world where puzzles aren't relevant to gaming. They challenge our intelligence and make us think a little harder about the games we play. Limbo was the unanimous favorite for the best puzzle game of 2010. It affected readers and editors alike with it's moody atmosphere and foreboding sense of death. In contrast, we nominated the saccharine sweet Ilomilo this year, showing just how diverse this genre can be. It doesn't matter if a game tries to be scary or charming, thoughtful or frantic; it just has to contain tricky puzzles that give us pause.

Puzzle games have changed dramatically since Tetris took the world by storm many years ago. The refined taste of modern puzzle fans is reflected in the success of games like Portal 2, Stacking, and Catherine. They may not share many similarities on the surface, but they all gave us a serious, and enjoyable, mental workout.

I just wish it was harder and longer. I only had trouble a few times playing this game, however overall it was some what easy... Perhaps thats because I played the first Portal so the concept was basically already done. A few new twists in Portal 2 but didn't take long to get the idea... Still I would say this is one of the best games in awhile... Keeping it on my shelf just for the chance of some DLC....

Good winner, the balance of the game was spot on that you would not need help but made you think how do I this and sometime it was the simple answer to the question that got the results, And the game was funny

Portal 2 ? "Challenging" ? "Makes you feel so incredibly smart" ? "Perfect balance between being challenging but never having logic that you can't work out on your own" ? Come on Gamespot, let's be serious for a moment. I'm not saying it doesn't deserve the title for its concept, its funny moments and the very welcome addition of a cooperative mode which isn't usually a part of puzzle games, but it could have been so much better would it have been longer and harder. Puzzle games are supposed to be hard, to require a few minutes even from long term gamers. Portal 2 wasn't difficult enough for core puzzle gamers.

A shame Pushmo missed the cut by a mere 2 days. Next year!

A worthy winner of this category. I have played Portal 2 more times than I can count, and the storyline remains fresh and immersive.
