- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
After being absent from last year's awards, the Best Fighting category makes its triumphant return to our year-end lineup. Mortal Kombat faithfully updated its classic 2D mechanics for the modern age while including a surprisingly rich story mode. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 offered all of the high-speed madness you know and love from its predecessors while fixing several issues seen in the original (also released this year). 2011 also marked the return of the king with The King of Fighters XIII, a radically improved sequel over the abysmal KoFXII. The handhelds got some strong, if unorthodox, options as well. But when the timer runs out and the life bars hit zero, only one game can emerge the winner. Who takes it this year? You'll have to wait and see.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 KOF RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MEDzZ3RO I will give you that. I played all three as well; but I guess we just look at the games differently. I respect the fact you didn't reply with some stupid half baked youtube comment.
@vengefulwilberg That wasn't meant to be my point, I'm all for the more underground titles winning. What I meant by it was having played all three, I wouldn't have said this was best personally. A lot of people won't be able to argue that point having not played it to know.
@aqmah Bored after 5 days? That has to be a joke my friend, because I've played it every day since release. It's even been through a couple of my friends' get together parties as well, they really like it. Not to mention how much I play KOFXI still. Fighting Game companies need to take note, making a 2D game look as beautiful as KOFXIII is better than slapping 3D on it.
I'm not going to lie, I thought MK9 would win. But I voted for KOFXIII regardless. I like all my fighters, and I feel like SNK needed this. Not only because it's a game I've been playing since I was a kid, but also because it's such an amazing fighter, I can definitely say that I play this game more then my other fighters. I'm glad they stuck to their roots. And fixed everything KOFXII messed up.
@Starters I agree with you. I like MK 9; but I do feel MK 9 won mostly due to popularity at the VGAs. The VGAs is cool; but popular games always takes the prize. If I was a betting man at the VGAs the number one rule of thumb would be to bet on the popular games to win. However, it didn't stop me from voting for the undisputed underdog though. I am not the type who follows the popularity band wagon when it comes to fighters. I play games I like or grew up with; however I judge games I play based on gameplay. Judging based on core gameplay is how you pick a winner. And I feel KOF 13 was the right game of choice this year.
KOF XIII's rock-hard gameplay mechanics alone should be enough to win this award. No need to address the story mode and online. Looks like they only took the popularity test as just a small portion of the overall points. The rest is their judgement. Heh... if this was purely popularity(*coughVGA*cough), MK will win. But, KOF XIII well deserve this title. Pure tactical fighting, good pace, great visual and sound effects, very very deep mechanics. Heck! I don't even know why people will say MK's or UMVC3's gameplay is better. Fighting games like this comes once in a while this days. Hope it win's again next year, IF we don't get a popularity contest that is.
i am surprised... ok kof is good game, but u will get bored after 5 days, just a simple good fighting game, unlike mk with alot balance and fun
@MEDzZ3RO When it comes to fighters popularity shouldn't be the sole reason why a game should win. KOF 13 is played by more people than you think; because the lesser number of people that you refer to only applies to the US. Outside of the US KOF 13 is played often. KOF 13 even topped Capcom fighters at the arcades during January of this year, and there is proof of that. I thought MK 9 would win; because of the popularity contest myself. However, there are other things that could have got in the way of the game winning. I am assuming balance issues and gimmicks might have something to do with it after watching the video. And this is based on the opinions of the employees at Gamespot. I am not trying to take anything away from MK 9, especially since I got MK 9. At least MK 9 won at Spike TV's VGA show.
Woooooooooooooow! I didn't expect this at all. I am a SF and Mortal Kombat fan. I thought MK 9 would win. I voted for the underdog known as KOF 13 despite my belief that MK would win; because I am more of a hardcore traditional 2D fighter fan. Even though it was a surprise I can see why this game was chosen. It has a better sense of balance, its fast paced, the gameplay options available accommodates many different play styles, the mobility of this game provides more gameplay options, the hit detection is really accurate, and the hit detection can be used to counter in different ways. MK 9 already won this award at the VGAs so I don't see what the big deal is.
I agree with this verdict. MK9 fails for having too many rebalances in a relatively short amount of time.
This is quite odd. It's a good game but Mortal Kombat should have been the obvious choice here. Unlike Mortal Kombat and Marvel VS Capcom, not many people have played this game.
