Game of the Year
Game of the Year
While GameSpot's editors traditionally nominate 10 games for finalists in this category, GameSpot's Game of the Year award is given to one and only one game that stood out above all the rest as being the most enjoyable, most impressive, most memorable, and overall best experience of the year.

It's hard to argue with a game as accomplished as Red Dead Redemption. This is a game with a lot of things going for it--a complete package that offers excellent gameplay, stirring music, memorable characters expertly given life with superb voice acting, and an enthralling story taken from the pages of classic Western films. Red Dead Redemption is GameSpot's 2010 Game of the Year.

Red Dead Redemption. Back when I didn't have a GS account, I was really pissed off that Red Dead Redemption won, and not games like Black Ops, Bad Company 2, or Reach (shooter addict). And I think I'm wrong. Renting it soon, my hops are way, WAY up! :)
Red dead is i think one of the best games out(for now) Because u couldn't hunt on GTA.It has us take a break from all of that stealing cars and using drugs. You can hunt, gamble herd cattle, ect, ect, ect.
I was unhappy that Red Dead won game of the year....and then I actually bought and beat it...now I think it deserves all the praise it gets. Red Dead Redemption is amazing!
LOL at the ending. You feel all badass for taking down that bear with the knife then all of a sudden PWNAGE!!! :D Love RDR
as 1 person below said, they hate rockstar! what??? why would u say that? at least they take out games that are full of interesting stories, fun and have hours of endless gameplay, what more could u want from a game? in my book there is nothing out there in console world that even comes close to them?
This is the best Rockstar game to date, but for me - that ain't sayin much. The action is better than in the GTA titles, but, and maybe it's just me, their sandlots always gets bland and repetitive after a while. Kudos to Rockstar for creating a western sandlot that was not plain awful, but I think there were others that easily brought more in regards to fresh, unique and exciting gameplay: 1. Alan Wake 2. Mass Effect 2 3. Bioshock 2 (yes... I said it!) However, GS' choice didn't agitate me this time - they could have done far worse
I hate Rockstar. I can understand GTA being very popular, with lots of stuff to do. The thing is: is any of it worth doing? Also, RDR is more or less GTA brought over 100 years into the past. I could make more arguments against the British gaming company, but I think this'll do for now.
@3dfd Are you kidding me? Black Ops? The ending makes no sence, the middle makes no sence... the game is a patchwork of one dudes memories.... only they are memories of all kinds of differant guys. That singleplayer game makes NO SENCE. It may be fun for the CoD nerds that love finding ways to cheat the FPS in multiplayer, but the single player game is terrible as far as story line.
@lolman360 I didn't say I didn't "Get" the ending of RdR... I said I didn't like it. It was just dumb. With such an awsome game and story I wanted a great ending that was memorable.... Halo 3... Great ending.... Mass Effect 1.... Great ending.... Half-life 1.... Great Ending.... All the fallouts.... Great Ending. RdR dosn't come close to how those games ended. Those games built and built and when the game came to its close really stamped them on my brain. I'll forget RdR's ending in another month or so, but I'll remember the meat of the story forever. Just not a good ending in my opinion. Maybe if the end of the game didn't drag on forever before it finally concluded I would have liked it a little better but the ending was poorly executed in my opinion.
Horse #@$$@# Simulator won, BS Mass Effect should have easily won that list, heck Bayonetta was a better game then RDR
@Phatjam98 If you watched or played western gamed you would get the ending of rdr, pay more attention to the story, it is the best ending this year the only realistic one other than reach.
Well as good as some of these games are, they cant compete with ME2. I love Red Dead but come on the ending to RDR was just not very good. After all of that gameplay and story, it was a real let down. On the other hand, ME2 was freaking amazing and the ending was a perfect setup for the final act. But even so, I cant really fault this choice. RDR was a great game, great story and wonderfull voice acting. I still give the personal edge to ME2.... Here's to ME3 getting game of the year next year.
Such an objective, honest quality re-review. And - being a complete mass effect fanboy myself - I have to admit, just how impossible it is to give game of the year to anything BUT RdR. Agreed. My Baby Mass Effect 2 a close second (simply on count of how many hours gameplay I've LOVED playing and have had out of RdR. The game is HUGE... and continues to pay for it's vaguely insignificant shop price time and time again v's game hours)
if you want RDR for pc copy and paste this: dear rockstar i want RDR for pc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I propose that, any year Rockstar releases a game, Gamespot drops all pretenses at actually judging anything and just gives the awards to Rockstar. Given not just this year but the last few years for awards, it's pretty much what Gamespot does anyway.
Thanks Rockstar for making such a good game, salute you the best game developer = Rockstar And again congrats for RDR and thanks for the GTA series
Good winner! This really is an epic game. So big, so fun and so good gameplay. And also the first game in many years that has brought a tear into my eye.
I haven't played RDR but i can see why it was chosen. It's the best "all-rounder" i guess. Also a great year for SEGA(!!) with 2 titles among the nominees (Bayonetta and Vanquish) and a worthy mention of Heavy Rain (a good reason to envy PS3 owners).
COD black ops? hahahahahaha im probably gonna get a million dislike for this but its just another call of duty, its nothing special like these games. I wouldve thought it would be on this list but it wouldnt have won anyways, its too straightforward and simple
Ive waited since May to play this game and tomorrow on xmas day i finally get to play it, well needless to say i cant wait to play Red Dead, 2010 Game of the year. Congratz Rockstar and happy xmas all.
