Best Wii Game

The Nintendo Wii was the must-have hardware of last year, thanks to its outrageously different control scheme that was inviting for beginners, as well as its powerful combination of a handful of sought-after first-party games and tons of downloadable classic 8-bit and 16-bit games for veteran game fans. This year, some of the Nintendo faithful were a bit disappointed that the company seemed to be turning its focus to more-accessible, more-casual games that had less to do with providing deep action adventure experiences and more to do with having the whole family gather around the living room. In spite of all that, there were still quite a few excellent games released for the system this year, both in stores and online via Nintendo's Wii Ware channel.

Readers' Choice Winner

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl GameSpot's Best Games of 2008 Readers' Choice Winner

Welcome to a brawl for the ages, where anything can happen, anyone can show up and all bets are off. In multiplayer games, characters from all Nintendo universes meet up in Nintendo locales to duke it out. In the solo mode called "The Subspace Emissary," the world of Smash Bros. is invaded by an entity called the Ancient Minister and his army of creatures, called "The Primid." Normally, characters come alive in the world of Smash Bros. to do battle, then turn back into trophies when defeated. However, the Ancient Minister starts turning characters into trophies to harness their power, then detonates bombs that suck pieces of the world back into his realm of Subspace. Eventually, all the characters must work together to defeat the invading creatures from Subspace - this is accomplished by playing through side-scrolling levels.

If they say that NO MORE HEROS is better than ssbb than why give it a lower score

Smash Bros. for sure. Mario Kart very close second.

It was stupid of them to choose NMH before. Sure, it has an actual story but come on. Super Smash Bros. Brawl beats it by far.

This actually surprised me, but I don't deem NMH a game that doesn't deserve the reward. @supezombiejesus: Does anyone care?

I bet the majority of the people in the US that have a wii have only played one game out of this list. Which is mario kart. Its sad really. I cant understand the wii craze, I dont really think its all that fun to play. And for all the people that actually play wii fit, why dont you go outside and run around a bit to say like 70 dollar.

Out of all these games, I only played SSBB and Mario Kart. i don't play my Wii much anymore since I got my PS3. My vote went to SSBB.

the wii is targeted toward who???? oh yeah think about that and look who won the readers choice. M$ and SONY know how to make keep selling systems but, Nintendo knows what there doing, say what you will, nintendo is sitting in the background owning.

Great choice by GS. Rather than succumbing to a tidal wave of fanboys, they went with the game that deserved to win. NMH is new, fresh, artistic, and full of humour and vision. It's fun to play and tells a great story. Though not as technically strong as Brawl (not saying much anyway), it's what a GOTY should be.

I don't think it's fair to say No More Heroes is so much worse than Brawl. No More Heroes is one of the few Wii games that go the controls right. I totally agree with rennik_I, single player wise No More Heroes wins by quite a bit but Brawl is a blast when playing multiplayer. They are both great games.

Now people will go and buy a Wii and No More Heroes thinking that it is one of the best games this system has to offer. When they get home and play it to find out that most licensed games have more quality and effort put into them, they will think that the rest of Wii's library is just as bad. No More Heroes is giving the system a bad name :( Seriously though, how can a legitamate review site give this game such an honour? It is a very shotily made game.

The Gamespot editors seemed to make the right choice this year.

yeah, like wuggles said...it's ALLLLL a conspiracy. Oooohhh. Get a life dudes. Theorize about something worthwhile like aliens doing it with bigfoot on the set of the fake moon landing. Now THATS a conspiracy theory.

Owning both these games, I agree either way, Brawl is the best multiplayer wii game of 08, no doubt about it, but for single player, I have to agree with NMH, so I agree with both winners.

It's so laughable that GameSpot's editors would put such an obscure game as the Wii GOTY. I am 100% positive that they KNEW that Brawl would have a decent shot at GOTY, combatting MGS4, and they chose NMH in order to ensure MGS4's victory. Seriously, look at the reader's votes: 59% for Brawl. Just laughable.

Brawl is an awesome game and it totally deserved Wii Goty.

The only reason No More Heroes beat Brawl was because Gamespot obsessed with M games... so this really shouldn't count.

Brawl is an awesome game, but NMH has a much better story and use of controls.

None of these should have come first, as they were all fantastically brilliant. 5-way draw!

By giving No More Heroes the Wii game of the year, it encourages third-party developers to step up their efforts on the Wii. That's a GOOD thing.
