Music enthusiasts rejoice!

I love music. I listen to it wherever and whenever I can. It can help me focus while working, motivate me when I need it to, and generally adds to any experience. The people out there who understand how I feel, and even those who don't, will love Rockstar's new game Beaterator for the PSP. This game, which is more like an application, allows you to make your own musical jams whenever and wherever. The game has thousands (literally) of tunes, sounds, loops, and melodies that you use in the creation of your song. You can even take those music tracks, record them, and then save them to you PSP for your own personal enjoyment or upload them onto your computer so that your friends may experience the masterpiece that you have created. There are a few cracks in its musical crown, but I will go into further detail about that later.

Pros
Obviously, the music! Rockstar did a great job with the music of this game, even getting the artist Timbaland (The Way I Are) to add in many handfuls of his own loops. You can also record your own loops, and even add loops onto your PSP from your computer. The game also lets you to manipulate the loop is a variety of different ways. Say that you enjoy the pacing of a loop of a piano playing, but you need some guitar in your song. You can simply change the sound of the piano, to any number of different guitar sounds. Not to mention that you can then take that loop, shorten it, make it longer, use a synthesizer on it, change the volume of it, and perform many other actions in order to get that loop sound the exact way you want it to sound.
Speaking of having things your way, the game also has multiple music making formats. You have live play, which is where, you basically….play live, it's kind of like a jam session that you have the option of recording. From there you can go into the studio session where you have access to more advanced controls. Both of these formats are rather difficult to explain with words, so I recommend that you search around for videos to get a visual look at what they are like. And while I am on the topic of difficulty….

Cons
There are multiple small things that bring this game down ever so slightly. First, while it isn't impossible to pick up the game and play it, if you aren't in live play then it does take some understanding to make music. Choosing tracks or loops and placing them in an order you want can get confusing to those who are inexperienced, however the game does include tutorials for practically everything except for how to use the analog stick (meaning that there are a lot of tutorials). Summarizing that, as long as you have 5-10 minutes, and are willing to let the game teach you how to use it, then it is easily playable by everyone. The other minute problem is the loop loading times. While you are searching through the massive amount of loops, you will probably want to hear what the loops sounds like before adding it to your soon to be masterpiece. You do this my simply pressing the triangle button, and waiting for the loop to load. These loading times aren't anything huge, but you would expect that a loop that takes up a quarter of a beat to load faster.

Beaterator is an awesome game for those of us who want to release our inner music artist. The slight flaws are easily outweighed by the good. Making this game, while not for everyone, one of the best on the PSP.
