One of Atari's best ports.

User Rating: 7.9 | Battlezone 2600
This may be Atari's best arcade port. Not only does "Battlezone" have the same basic gameplay mechanics of the original, it actually has better enemy AI and you don't have to stick your face in a viewfinder smeared with the oily residue from the faces of lord-knows how many teenagers riddled with acne... ick.

Hygienic reasons notwithstanding, "Battlezone" on the Atari worked so well because it offered the same gameplay as the arcade original. The rendering of the 3D environment is so well done that you can see projectiles whiz past your tank on near-misses, and you can even maneuver into position so that enemy tanks end up shooting each other - that's a damned good rendering job on the 2600's hardware. The only glaring omission from the arcade version is the lack of rocks to use for cover, which isn't that much of a sacrifice in the long run. The graphics are easy on the eyes and render the game with enough detail that you can tell what's going on. While not as distinctive as the vector graphics from the arcade, but considering the hardware limitations "Battlezone" looks petty good nonetheless. Overall, I'd have to say that this port stands up to it the original and offers it's own take on it without feeling "cheap" or inferior... which is a major accomplishment for an Atari 2600 game.
