I've been trying to piece together the difficulty of them. I'm not too good at the game yet though.

So far I feel like it's something like

    Ragnarok
    Wookie
    Surf
    Arctic
    Turbo
    Intruder
    Karnath

And I'm not sure after that, but Rat Race and Clinger Winger as the second and first hardest stages, from what I've seen.

    Thoughts?

I haven't actually beaten the game yet. I'm stuck on Level 12 right now and it's so annoying having to restart and go through 11 levels at this point just to be able to keep trying until running out of continues. It really doesn't help that this level seems ridiculously long, either. So far, the furthest I've gotten in it is this part with a yellow cloud thing and a bunch of springs in a platforming sequence.

Anyway, my opinion so far, anyway, from hardest to easiest (I may come back and change my mind after I beat the game, I don't know):

    Level 12: The Revolution
    Level 9: Terra Tubes
    Level 8: Intruder Excluder
    Level 10: Rat Race
    Level 11: Clinger Winger
    Level 5: Surf City
    Level 6: Karnath's Lair
    Level 4: Ice Cavern
    Level 7: Volkmire's Inferno
    Level 3: Turbo Tunnel
    Level 2: Wookie Hole
    Level 1: Ragnarok's Canyon

Honestly, compared to what some people seem to think, I find the game's difficulty to be pretty linear for the most part. The only possible exceptions for me are Rat Race and Clinger Winger. The only reason I have them ranked that high is pretty much just because of the boss battles, to be honest. For the stages themselves, Rat Race is only somewhat difficult in the final race, and I don't understand why Clinger Winger is generally considered to be one of the most difficult stages in the game. I passed the stage itself (up until the boss) on my second or third life the first time I reached it, and you may suffer a death or two against the boss, but it's not THAT bad.

...Then again, I also ranked Volkmire's Inferno really low compared to what I normally see, so maybe it's just me and the type of gameplay that I'm best at.

I would rank them the same as KingMetalSlime did, except to switch the position of Level 5 with Level 7. I think.

Okay, so I actually just took two more tries at this game tonight, and on my second try I finally beat the game (I had been working on this game for one or two attempts per day for about the past week or so). I was actually surprised by how close I was to the end when I wrote my last post. I made it to the Dark Queen on my first try tonight, but I unfortunately ran out of continues before I was able to beat her. I took her down easily enough on my second try, though, and actually beat the game without continuing or warping, with the maximum possible score, and with at least five extra lives in reserve (all of my hearts were filled in; I don't know exactly how many lives I had left at the end).

Anyway, since there is apparently technically a Level 13 (Armageddon), I suppose I would place that in between Rat Race and Clinger Winger on my previous list. Otherwise, I still stand behind what I said before regarding the difficulty of each stage.

Some final thoughts on this game:

Honestly, I would say that the difficulty of this game is certainly above average even as far as NES games go, but I personally would not say that it's the most difficult game on the console. It's up there, but to use some other games that I've beaten as examples, I would consider Ghosts 'n Goblins; Ironsword; and possibly even 1943 and Castlevania 1 and 3 to be more difficult. I think the main difference is that all of the games that I've listed give you unlimited continues (or, in the case of Ironsword, a means to continue unlimitedly), whereas Battletoads forces you to make do with 3 continues. I think that this causes people to perceive this game as being more difficult than those games and give up quickly, not realizing that it actually becomes fairly easy, at least compared to those other games that I've listed, if you put enough time (and restarts) into the game to learn each level.

Anyway, I found this game to be extremely fun and it's probably now one of my personal favorite NES games. I wish that more people would play it, but I imagine many are quickly turned away by the amount of effort that it takes to beat it for the first time.

If any of you guys have played any of the other Battletoads games, how do they compare to this one? If they're good as well, I think I'd like to get them at some point and play through them also.

"Castlevania 1 and 3 to be more difficult"

On the one hand, those games don't really provide ways of warping in-game, so I suppose Battletoads does make it easier in terms of skipping enemies (I still suck hugely at Clinger Winger, hate that level). However, Battletoads does have that really, REALLY annoying bug in Rat Race that, if it kicks in, prevents the boss from showing up and basically means you have to reset the game. It's not fun at all when it happens on a console run.

I do agree that there are plenty of NES games that are harder than Battletoads though (including those that are absurdly difficult out of sheer bad programming, terrible controls, etc). Solving a game like The Immortal or Bokosuka Wars without the help of a guide is far more difficult than mastering Battletoads.

I actually thought Surf City was one of the easier stages. Some stages like Snake Pit or Volkamire's Inferno, you need to memorize. But I got through Surf City without any memorization.

KingMetalSlime, I wish I had your NES skills. I started this game on January 18 and today made it to Terra Tubes for the first time. I play once a day unless I'm working or something (and went two nonconsecutive weeks without playing). I noticed that if I try playing more than once in a day I do absolutely awful the second time around.

    I'll say....

Level 12: The Revolution.... ugh, so many ways to screw up and die. At least the last boss is easy. But I hate that last stretch where you have to race to the top and avoid being blown off (from what I remember)
Level 10: Rat Race..... I can still never reliably beat this stage.
    Level 9: Terra Tubes
    Level 7: Volkmire's Inferno
    Level 8: Intruder Excluder
Level 6: Karnath's Lair... however, I'll give this stage credit for being one of the most difficult to truly reliably beat without dying even for experienced players.
    Level 4: Ice Cavern
Level 3: Turbo Tunnel.... the 8th hardest stage, yet this is where people give up!
Level 11: Clinger Winger.... with a good controller it's easy as long as you concentrate.
    Level 5: Surf City
    Level 2: Wookie Hole
Level 1: Ragnarok's Canyon.... haha. Oh, how deceiving this level is as far as the rest of the game!

    For me:

    Stage 12: The Revolution
    Stage 10: Rat Race
    Stage 11: Clinger Winger
    Stage 9: Terra Tubes
    Stage 8: Intruder Excluder
    Stage 6: Karnath's Lair
    Stage 7: Volkmire's Inferno
    Stage 3: Turbo Tunnel
    Stage 5: Surf City
    Stage 4: Arctic Caverns
    Stage 2: Wookie Hole
    Stage 1: Ragnarok's Canyon

So yeah, I find it to mostly be pretty linear. o.o

I must be the only one who thought level 7 - the inferno - was the hardest. The level itself isn't very difficult; however, the end of that level is very difficult to navigate through.

Now that I've played every level except all of Karnaths, Surf City and Volkmire's...

    1. Revolution (it takes so long to master the physics and timing of jumping and deal with the wacky timing for the rhinos...like the 4th rhino is programmed totally different than the other ones. I still haven't beaten this level)

    2. Terra Tubes (so much luck is required to beat this in one or two tries...hope to god the eels leave you alone and the orange fish leave you alone, because sometimes they are numerous and extremely aggressive...and don't get me started on the ducks and that jump out of the water in the final gear chase)

    3. Rat Race (again, a certain amount of luck is involved in the third race because you have to hope that bolt isn't going. This stage actually isn't that bad because if you hit the rat in the third race after dropping through the first moving platform, he gets hung up on the second moving platform and that gives you a massive head start. Just hit him a few more times on the second set of straight paths and he's toast)

    4. Turbo Tunnel (Only because of the awfully programmed ! jumps. See that topic for my rant)

    5. Intruder Excluder (I used to have a ton of problems with this level, but now I can beat it consistently with 0-1 deaths. It just comes down to mastering the timing of a bunch of jumps and having a ton of patience when fighting Robo Manus).

    6. Clinger Winger (Once you master the timing of when to turn the corners, you can beat this level every time without dying. Even the boss fight is easy.)

    7. Artic Caverns (This level is really easy. The only hard part is that low jump toward the end, and if you jump at the last second and master that you can beat this every time with no deaths).

    8. Wookie Hole (Don't get too carried away focusing on the 1-Ups...)

    9. Ragnarok's Canyon *rocks out to that sweet bass line*

Ok . Finally i beat this game. Now I`m like a BOSS. I made my rating by time I spend on this levels and how much times did I die during the level.

Level 1: Ragnarok's Canyon . The easiest level in the game. No problems for rookies.

Level 2: Wookie Hole You can die here in some places but after receiving some expierence its pretty easy.

Level 4: Ice Cavern This level is very annoying. But some practice and it`s so easy. Level is very nice.

Level 5: Surf City The only problem here is random mines during racing like in level 7. But others level are much harder.

Level 8: Intruder Excluder. The only problem here are nerves. The boss may be is the hardest in the game.

Level 9: Terra Tubes Hmm. The level is not so gard, but sharks and ducks are annoying. I reall enjoy this part of a game.

Level 3: Turbo Tunnel What can I say. Aftet the first two levels the difficulty is insane. And you can die a billion times. Aftes some practice not so hard.

Level 6: Karnath's Lair This is so sick and hard. You must have steel balls to beat this lvl. After practice the difficulty is medium.

Level 12: The Revolution There a lot of place where you can die. But after 11 levels you can do it. The last boss is so easy, so this is not the hardest stage.

Level 7: Volkmire's Inferno There are thow hard places: random comets and the last
segment. It`s really very hard level.

Level 10: Rat Race Wow what a level. The last race is something incredible and unbeatable. But after practice and hitting the last bomber during the race it`s become not so hard like it looks.

Level 11. Yes this is really f****** hard. I died a billions times. Sometimes I was thinking I couldn`t beat it. But PRACTICe and only PRACTICE can help you. Now i can pass this level with closed eyes.
