Battlefield: Bad Company Updated Multiplayer Hands On - Vehicles and Combat
We get reassigned to Battlefield's Bad Company and spend some time with the highly addictive multiplayer mode.
After fighting battles in World War II, Vietnam, the present day, and 2142, DICE's Battlefield series takes a new turn in Battlefield: Bad Company. The scenario is familiar to fans of Battlefield 2 or Activision's Call of Duty 4: placing gamers in a present-day scenario. This time around, however, you won't be a gung-ho, brain-dead, order-obeying grunt.
You've been thrown into B Company (or Bad Company). B Company is a mishmash of less-than-stellar soldiers who get sent to the front line as cannon fodder and usually have a short life expectancy as a result. In a style reminiscent of the motion picture Three Kings, you'll discover that being a soldier isn't just about fighting for the greater good, and throughout the single-player campaign, you'll look out for your own interests and possibly grab some booty along the way.
Bad Company has seven single-player missions, which will generally take around 45 minutes each to complete. In addition, there's a strong multiplayer mode that supports up to 24 simultaneous players. Rather than including a conquest mode, which has traditionally been Battlefield's bread and butter, DICE has introduced a new mode called Gold Rush. As the name implies, you'll take turns defending, or attacking, a number of gold stockpiles. It's a plant-the-bomb-style mode with both teams scrambling to take over the control points, and from what we've experienced, it's frantic, fun, and addictive.
GameSpot previously took a look at the Ascension map, and the closed beta--which is now coming to an end--featured the Oasis and Middle East maps. This time around we were treated to a new map, titled Harvest Day in the Xbox 360 version. The map takes place in an open field, with several small villages scattered around the countryside. In between the villages is a shallow river with a few bridges of strategic importance. Much of Bad Company's environment is destructible, including the bridges, which can be destroyed with heavy firepower to make it tricky--if not impossible--for tanks to cross.
Bad Company has five character classes: assault, recon, support, demolition, and specialist. All have four main weapons to choose from, with secondary fire options. For example, the recon class is equipped with a sniper rifle and a set of binoculars and can call in airstrikes by "painting" a target for several seconds. Once the airstrike has been deployed, you then have to assume control of the missile to guide it to the target. Although it leaves you exposed at the time, the result is immensely satisfying if you're accurate.
Another impressive heavy weapon is artillery. To operate it, you'll assume a top-down satellite view, which you can use to acquire targets on the ground. Once it's fired, you'll unleash a barrage of shells, decimating any troops, vehicles, or objects in the blast radius. It will even move earth, leaving craters behind.
You'll also have access to mounted laser-guided missile launchers. You can guide a missile to its target using the right analogue stick. Tanks, jeeps, armoured personnel carriers, and helicopters can also be manned in the game.
After collecting feedback from players, DICE has announced that it will include the classic conquest mode after launch as a downloadable pack. A spokesperson for DICE told GameSpot that the development team is currently wrapping up work on the game and will move on to the conquest pack when the game is finished.
Battlefield is bringing some seriously bad company to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on June 13 in Europe and on June 23 in North America. Stay tuned for a preview of DICE's other upcoming Battlefield game, Battlefield Heroes, in the coming days.
damn i want to know these things before i buy! 1. if the snipers have ghillie suits? and 2. if it shows where the enemy is like the last battlefield...that was so gay thats y i switched to socom ca after battlefield 2....sumone plz answer
kick COD4 s ass but halo 3 is still much better
oh, this game is awesome:D the only problem is that my father wanted to try it and he got addicted to it :/
rich185, Nice! i also LMAO at the last paragraph LOL : )
an 8.5 o,...,O , holy Maria
been playin demo for like 2weeks now i think kicks COD4s ass PWNED XD defo gettin this
rich185, well put, I hate people who are so biased to one game, and think all others suck.
This games looks so cool!!!
Can't wait! the multiplayer looks awesome.
haha johnchandos you gotta chill the **** out man, **** anyone would think you get paid to suck COD's balls. So what if it doesn't "redefine' the genre, guess what? NOTHING WILL! why's that? because the basic principle has been solidly in place for a while now: locations, guns, people = a shooter. that's as real as the basics go in real life, anything else the developers add is just something trying to decorate the game to encourage more people to buy it. What did COD have? Perk system. What has Battlefield got? Destructable environments. Infinity Ward put Perks in to make their game stand out, and it did, i had some very good times on that game, but it certainly didnt 'redefine' the FPS genre did it? DICE built on the location/setting side of things with building destruction, which makes it stand out and i'm enjoying, but again, doesnt redefine the whole FPS genre. what will COD 6 do? (i'm assuming treyarch will not be as good with the 5th) How will they possibly redefine the genre? more perks? are they going to realise a Wii style gaming suit where if you get shot, you literally die? There's nothing anyone can do. As for shooting someone 3 times in the face through a tree, i think you're exagerating, trees get blown to **** in one shotgun shot, as do fences. i was kicking ass with the shotgun last night with my first proper go as that class, over 20 kills with the shotgun so it's not that bad. Now run along kid, i think the staff at Infinity Ward need fellating.
to tell you guys the truth, i like the commercials more than the game itself. reminds me of TF2. hopefully those DICE dumbwads got their act together. i played BF2, and 2142. im still disappointed in 2142 and BF2 was an exceptional game that became every gamers nightmare overnight.
I think I may have to lay down the sticks on call of duty 4 for this game. COD4 will go towards store credit for this game!
I cant wait for this game to come out! my only question is, will the full game have planes/jets ?
johnchandos wtf are you talking about? the shot guns are one hit K-O's in this game, no matter where you shoot them. and you can shoot through things, the reason you couldnt hit anyone with your shot gun is probally because they were 30 feet away dumbass. and its physics and graphis are amazing, just like most other games on ps3 or 360, the only reason your dissing this game so much is because you KNOW its going to tie or do better then cod4, and your just trying to get people to buy cod4
"Is Conquest mode going to be a FREE map pack or they going to stick us with a charge? I'm not paying for crap that should be in the game to begin with." It will be free
Does it really matter whether it is better than COD4 or not? I happily play COD4 and Halo 3 and would say they triumph over each other in different places but neither is the overall best - who said you can only choose to play one FPS at a time anyway? The conquest mode is going to be a free update when the game is launched.
I'm looking forward to this since CoD5 won't be modern.
Just played the demo, and well... all those guys saying it's awesome, try COD4 multiplayer. I mean, aside from the vehicles, COD4 owns this one hands up. The physics of the game is a joke. The weapons are unwieldy. It's darn frustrating to shoot someone in the face with a shotgun three times and see them NOT die, because, oh see that? A tiny willowy branch is in the way!!! If not that, it's a perpetually resilient piece of wooden fence. HELLO, BULLET PENETRATION MISSING IN YOUR NEXT-GEN GAME, HELLO?? The game is claiming to be redefining the genre... In the same way catapults would redefine modern warfare, I guess! This game could have been fun a couple years ago because that's where its graphics and physics engine belong. There's nothing next-gen about it. Better luck catching up with Infinity Ward next time.
Is Conquest mode going to be a FREE map pack or they going to stick us with a charge? I'm not paying for crap that should be in the game to begin with.
Seeing how CoD5 is WW2 era and Infinity Ward is not heading the project, Bad Company is going to be the FPS to be playing, the demo is god-like
played the demo and love it, cant wait for release
I am really really looking forward to this game. I have been waiting for a new multiplayer game, and this could be big.
looks good played the multiplayer demo but the lag is terrible, hope it gets sorted
What's this? Europe getting it before the states? It's a miracle!
Great multiplayer, terrible single player demo. I'm so sick of stupid war game stereotypes. Here's the guy that blows things up, here's the nerd with the intelligence, here's the battle hardened CO, and what the hell, there's got to be a female in the game so she'll be the voice in the headset... boring. The multiplayer is fun and addicting, though. Much, much better than Frontlines, which to me is a more similar competitor than any actual Battlefield game.
I hope they include a hard-core mode like COD4. If they make it where people die quick and vehicles take massive punishment I might actually switch.
love the demo, hopefully they won´t charge $$$ for the Conquest mode >___>
As tempting as this looks, I don't think It'll ever replace my precious Call of Duty 4. Or 3. Or 2. Or 1... WOOOT! I have now played 9 days on CoD 4! Kill to death ratio- 1 : 2.01 WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!
The demo for this game is really addictive fun. My only complaint about gold rush is when you are attacking you have to destroy the 2 gold crates four times to win. I think it should only be three times. It seems unbalanced towards the defenders and difficult to win. Nevertheless the game is a lot of fun. I must have played the Oasis map at least 20 times, I can?t wait to see the rest of the game. Oh and I hate the damn helicopter controls.
Some problems I found playing the demo was that there was a bit of lag, way too small font and some really annoying 8 year olds but other than that it is going to be good
This game looks like it has some really impressive multiplayer! Maybe something to get me off of COD4!!
The demo was even awesome. Can't wait for the game.
actually, Red_26, charonill is right. on the second day of the demo being available to the public, so many people were playing it that matches lagged so much that they were unplayable. in fact, a headline at the top of the multiplayer menu says "Due to an immense response, we are trying to get more servers, so hang on!" It took a really long time for me to load into the multiplayer menu, and when I eventually did, I couldnt view any of my account stats or unlocks. That's how bad it was. BUT, this lag problem only happened on June 6. After that, EA put lots of new servers up, and lag problems ceased. You posted ur comment on June 7, so the lag probably was gone when you played at that time.
charonill what are u smoking, there is no lag in the demo, u must have some really bad internet connection
Looks good. I liked the demo.
I want to be able to sign in (at least) one guest, or I'm gettin' Far Cry 2. (Going prone won't hurt either)
LOVE IT
Is it me or does the demo multiplayer seem wwaaay too laggy? I hope they fix the lag problems before the main game ships. I hate having to expend a clip at someone's face at pointblank range only to find that they're still alive and kicking then get knifed.
i'm so getting this!!!!!!!!
Helicopter controls are much better in the demo. I played the beta for a few hours and gave up because of the vehicle controls and because the weapons seemed to be too weak. They fixed all that in the demo and I can't get enough of it now. I'm excited to get the game when it comes out.
sorry to tell you mate but I had the beta and the helicopter controls are the worst in the series! Its near impossible to fly!
Did anyone find the helicopters a nightmare to control in the previous Battlefields? Hope they've looked into the controls for this one!
@I_pWnzz_YoU first of all i deffo get mgs4 then get both fc2+bfbc........ i just need a job. XD
Wow, this game looks AMAZING!!! I want it now....24 more days. @XxFAZExX, They both look like great games. I personally haven't played Far Cry before but I'd still say go with BF:BC. It's your choice though.
Battlefield is the only game that provides vehicles combat, its a great concept, and it is what makes battlefield unique. but to be honest, i disliked battlefield 2 since i bought and played it. they say the jets r too cheap and whatnot that makes the game unbalanced, after that, many ppl started to play in infantry only servers. but seriously, why would u play an infantry only server with a game that has the unique part of having vehicles? just like the preview said, "Why walk when you can roll in style?" someone may still think, even without vehicles, BF2 is still hell of a game. but what really let me quit BF2 is the so called "bunny hopping" and "dolphin diving". if u played bf2 long enough, then u know what im refering to. DICE is still ok, battlefield is not bad because of its ideas or something, its just they need to work on the balancing issues, but under EA's pressure, DICE cant make the game better, instead they need to make more and more expansion packs for EA to earn more and more money. im pretty sure the code to unlock weapons in Bad Company is EA's great idea to get money even b4 the launch. I still do hope that Bad Company will be well developed, but i am not sure if it can beat CoD4, I really like CoD4. Infinity Ward under Activision vs. DICE under EA, will Bad Company be the top 1 xbox live most playing?
hmmm should i get this or far cry 2?
Is that a bad thing?
somedude242,yeah thats fair enough and i do agree with you.Inevitably campaigns come to an end but my argument is there is to much out there for online play and like you said not every one has it or even likes it.im annoyed at the fact that this game in paticular not so long ago was boasting of an unbeatable single player mode. Then as its getting closer to release the said single player is sudenly not as big as their boasts! Im not against online play, im a regular with GTA4 online, what i am against though is buying a game only to finish it two days latter because its a multiplayer game.
So far i have never been unhappy with a battlefield game so i am really hoping that this game doesn't disappointed... and @ mikey1, yeah i agree with you although i love the online multi-player experience. Campaign is a big thing and i normally find myself not playing the x-box when i run out of live. Although halo 3's option of forge has kept me entertained in times of need and with-out that i think i would've just trashed my x-box... thankfully i didn't and i waded out the few weeks before i bought a years worth of live. Campaign is important, but please understand that their are millions out there who crave a great online multi-player experience and so not alot of people are going to agree with you. Online is an important part of a game, and although it's not accessible to everyone, it is not something that should be ignored. In other words, i prefer that the battlefield franchise focus more on the multi-player than the campaign. Why? Because I find that after I finish a games campaign and unlock all that i can and i finish it on the highest difficulty, i actually get bored with the game. Multi-player is what keeps me playing the game after i have finished the game... Now that is not too say that i completely avoid RPG games. In fact i own Oblivion, and i have almost finished all the campaign side missions, i own Assassins Creed, and i am ecstatic about how Fable 2 is looking (lets hope it's not a flop), so although campaign is important, i find that the multi-player aids in the longevity of a game. That is unless the game is a rpg in which case i would hope that the Campaign was one too keep me pre-occupied for a long time. In my opinion. Campaign makes 25% of a game, mutli-player makes up 25%, generally if the game is fun makes up the other 25% and the final 25% is made up of whether i can enjoy the game with my friends. I am also going to finish by saying that i am one of those players that runs around in circles chasing and trying to kill other people running around in circles, and call me crazy, but i find that extremely enjoyable. thank you
