Why are these updates so ****ing big?

Thank consoles for that. Frostbite is designed from the ground up to make quick builds for console, at the expense of having all of the assets "pre-cooked" in order to make it easier to stream the textures and models right off the disc vs loading them into memory.
Wich translates to: whenever they have to patch something, they have to replace the whole damn thing with an updated version; so if it is some map geometry, instead of just modifying the specific model, they have to modify and remake the WHOLE level.
And since they can't modify the content on the disc, they have to force you to make a install; so for the PC version, since it actually uses the exact same build with different parameters, if they "patch" something, they have to force you to overwrite the whole pack.
I had to reinstall BF3 because I formatted my PC; the current BF3 vanilla installer is 18 GB long; and all four expansions are nearing 4 GB each after all the patching is done.
At least they are updating the newer downloads.
