ill be happy to see bad company 2's level of destruction again with this map, was a bit disgruntled with bf3 moving away from full scale destruction
Battlefield 3 is going close quarters. Here's how to adapt your game.
As you may have heard, DICE announced an upcoming trio of Battlefield 3 expansion packs during GDC last week. Each of these packs follows a distinct theme: Close Quarters offers intimate, indoor environments; Armored Kill promises vehicle warfare and Battlefield 3's biggest maps yet; and End Game is all about detective work. No, seriously, DICE isn't revealing anything about End Game besides the name itself.
At any rate, the first expansion is June's Close Quarters, and we had a chance to play through one of its four maps at an event during GDC last week. The map in question was an ultramodern hotel rooftop looming high above the Tehran skyline called Ziba Tower. It was mostly an indoor locale that immediately contrasted with the bulk of the vanilla Battlefield 3 maps. As such, it might require you to switch up your strategy a little bit. Here are a few words of advice after our playthrough:
Walls Are Not Always Your Friend
Ziba Tower bears a strong resemblance to the Paris office level from Battlefield 3's single-player story, both in terms of architecture and style. It's an achingly stylish cluster of rooms, hallways, and stairways where you'll constantly be darting in and out of doorways to get from one room to the next.
With this layout, you may be tempted to back into a corner and pick off anyone unlucky enough to run into the room and, thus, directly in front of your gun barrel. But if you camp in the corner, that doesn't mean there won't be some heated shoot-out in the next room over, with both parties flinging grenades every which way in an attempt to wipe the other person from existence. Suddenly, that wall that you found so helpful may come crumbling down, with you left fully exposed to the gunfire.
So be careful when running from room to room. On a map like this one, it pays to keep moving. It may be tempting to hide out in one room and wait for enemies to come to you, but these walls are thin--not sturdy building exteriors. They can topple down easily. Bear that in mind.
Snipers Should Downgrade That 12X Scope
Ziba Tower is a smaller map in the grand scheme of things, but you can still get away with playing as a sniper. There are a number of long sight lines to choose from, such as lengthy hallways that run the length of a building or a large center patio in the middle of the map where a series of balconies overlook a large outdoor area. Hell, there's even a shallow swimming pool right on the edge of the building that you can crouch in, if you fancy yourself an aquatic camper.
But none of these sight lines are quite so massive that you'll want to be keep using the same 12X scope that you've been using on, say, the Caspian Border map. Snipers will probably want to drop to something like the 6X scope (or an 8X at the very most), lest they zoom in on a picture frame at the end of a hallway and fire off an errant round assuming it's an enemy's head.
A Medic's Heaven
Anyone who has played as the assault class in Battlefield 3 knows that there's a strong correlation between the size of a map (or lack thereof) and the usefulness of the medic equipment. That is to say, the smaller the map, the more easily you can run about the place with your defibrillator paddles reviving your teammates. On Ziba Tower, that strategy works quite well. The layout of the map is such that you're rarely out in the open with your defenses dropped, so you can dash around simply reviving any teammates who've recently been gunned down.
So if you're looking to use this new expansion pack as an excuse to try out a new kit that you haven't spent much time with before, assault would be a fine choice. You'll be able to rack up experience points left and right, simply acting as a mobile health station. And your teammates will think you're an awfully swell person too, provided they're not one of those "Don't revive me, bro!" types of jerks. Who wants to be on a team with one of those guys?
Nice....Metro is one of my favourite maps in BF3 so some new indoor maps will be great, I wouldn't worry too much about the USAS noobs.....a quick 3 round burst out of the KH2002 usually sorts them out.
Although this map looks extremely smaller then say metro, which is the most similar map to it being that they are both indoors( mostly) i cant say i like it being so small but i hope this means that players in squads will work together more and stay in tight groups. What im not looking forward to is everyone using the USAS with frag rounds shooting all the walls just to hope that they kill someone. Anyone using the frag rounds are noobs. theres no skill in aiming a rapid fire nade launcher. i hope the new weapons add some more pistols. and say one of each weapon class, sniper, assualt rifle, SMG, shotgun, handgun.
Looking forward to this will be a nice mix of maps in BF3 when this is out. I believe there will be 4 new maps plus a lots of new weapons and unlocks.
Looks pretty damn sweet I'm not gonna lie. Kinda reminds me of the original Red Faction for the sheer destructiveness :)
@ -Unreal- crysis 2 still has map-editors and toolkits too and its on consoles. So did far-cry 2. so stop b*tching. understand the difference between its the publishers fault and its consoles. Anyway. this looks promising and would no doubt be very intense like MoH multiplayer (Its just better than CoD). I liked operation metro and i wanted more levels to be like those paris levels in the campaign mode. but then again.....i dont wanna spend my cash on just a few maps. why cant they go back to the old days where dice gave you free maps every few months and a cheap DLC that gave an entirely new (but similar game) D*MN YOU EA!!!
The reason i Play battlefield is because you have large maps and freedom e.g C4 on a jeep and run it into tanks. long range hard sniping kills. etc by having a small urban map you are removing battlefield and just making it a COD spin. play metro it doesn't work USAS guys run rampant killing you and if you are in a bad position and your friends revive you you just keep dying its pointless
Is there gonna be more than one map in this pack like there was with Back to Karkand? Or am i gonna end up paying 15 dollars for one map and a few guns like I did with all the BLOPS Zombie maps.
@ strothers101 - remember that little thing called the upcoming patch? Yeah, USAS + Frag won't be getting much use after it's nerfed to hell.
Remember when PC games had map editors and toolkits allowing users to make this content and bring it to the players for free. Well consoles ruined that.
@djpetitte Normally I would agree, but DICE has been constantly ingnroing the idea of bringing back map scaling from previous BF games, both before and after BF3's release. If they had done this, they could have had small versions with these buildings, and medium/large versions with the building(s) makign a small aprt of it. Essentially, they could have brought us CQ and AK in ONE pack, containing a total of 12 different ways to play! It baffles me how they are so stupid as to ignore such a simple, yet profitable feature. Also, people will likely argue that it takes a long time to amke the maps, for those people, know that BF3 was made within one year, and they have a team of over 100. They could please everyone and promote their whole "play it your way" thing, yet they don't! This kind of stupidity and ignorance makes it next to impossible for me to justify or even mildly respect DICE whatsoever.
@ i_like_space - No, it's not free. why do you assume it's going to be another free release for the pre-order junkies? Give these guy's their well deserved money.
Haha, bringing Battlefield into Call of duty grounds. Obviously this game will do it much better. And, unlike COD, these maps are worth the $15 they're most likely going to be priced at.
I'm curious on the beginning of the trailer a Marine on the bottom left corner was sliding to cover...anyone else see that?
I love the close quarters approach. But, that being said, Metro does NOT work, at all. Most unbalanced map I've ever played, but I still love it.
Hey EA i live in NZ and your servers for PS3 are literally a joke its either get half way through a game and ea connection lost or half way through a game and session connection lost. don't focus on making expansion packs fix your millions of bugs already present. P.S don't NERF the USAS get RID of it entirely it just makes the game pointless and not fun
Although it looks awesome what will realy happen if i buy this will be ending up shouting " Fu*king guy with the frag USAS ! " I guess ill pass this one and wait for the other two : D
I dont know if most of you are console players, but on the PC there's lots of 24/7 Metro maps, and all of them are usually full, people DO LIKE CQ combat in BF3.
I like the sound of this exp pack cos i only ever play the metro only servers cos im good at it i suck on those open area maps like caspian.
I'm one of the few who enjoys both MW3/BF3 so I'm really looking forward to this, seeing as COD still hasn't released anything for non elite members (which is terrible imo) BF3 is pulling ahead... especially on PC where MW3 servers are deserted.
I like the idea of a CQ map. I see a lot of people feel it's an attempt to cater to the COD crowd, but I disagree - to me it's just to add variety to the map selection. BF3 still has something that COD will never have - destructible environments, and me coming from MW2, I can't tell you how big of a difference that makes. In COD, you see an RPG headed your way, duck behind the wooden crate and you're golden. In BF3, get the F#$K OUT immediately or you're screwed (Personal experience in my first match in BF3, where I did what I usually do in COD - strafe behind the door when a rocket's coming - bloody house came down around me, it was AWESOME! :D)! It changes everything, and even if BF3 had EXACTLY the same maps as COD, it would still be very different.
@Yuusha09 will be some Knife/Pistols only ones too ;) . imagen rush with knifes only or Cq with pistols only :D its going to be fun as hell :D :D :)
I love how BF3 requires you think about your class based on the environment/map. No matter what the haters say, this game requires strategic thinking. Like how playing Metro as a full on Engineer class or Caspian as Medic only. It will reflect in your score.
I'll be skipping on this one for sure. Bring on Armored Kill, that's the only worthy map pack they seem to be working on now!
I never play vanilla close-quarters. Tbh, DICE should've done more conquest maps instead. But it's good that DICE supports different playstyles. I look forward to the third expansion pack containing the big maps.
everyone can complain as much as they want but I have faith in Dice. They are giving us three expansions over the next year if not more, thats alot of fresh content and not just putting out another game next fall(exculding MOH) These are actualy expansion packs ppl. you should be happy and if the one in june doesnt fit your needs, then the next one will. I dont know what has happened to gamers in recent years but we are all whiney little b*tches.. inlcuding myself. IF cqc isnt for you then wait for the next one, thats supposed to have the biggest maps ever.
Going to be funny seeing all the servers with "NO USAS" in the title... seriously though, that gun is stupid with frags.
@major_silva * Where are the flashbangs, breaching charges, gas grenades, gas masks, and other equipment that you would expect to have in tight environments?* I Agree, we need them on all maps, but where are they ????
