Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand Gameplay Video and Impressions
Want to see what December's new maps looks like? We've got gameplay videos for you!
Even though most Battlefield 3 players are still learning the ins and outs of the game's multiplayer maps, EA is already prepping a four-map downloadable update scheduled for release next month. The map pack is called Back to Karkand and features a number of classic Battlefield maps, as well as a new mode called Conquest Assault. This mode is sort of a combination of Conquest and Rush, putting a team of defenders against a team of attackers as they all fight over three different flag-capture points. The twist is that the attackers start with fewer respawns, while the defenders have no spawn base; they can only squad spawn or spawn on successfully defended flags. So what's the deal with those "new" maps? Well, here's a breakdown of the two we got a chance to play:
Strike at Karkand
If this map sounds familiar, there's a reason: It's a remake of the fan-favorite Battlefield 2 map of the same name. This one takes place in a Middle Eastern city that's visually similar to the Battlefield 3 campaign levels set in Tehran. The density of buildings makes it a great map to pick off opponents from the rooftops, but there are more than a few tanks that can literally take the ground out from under you at a moment's notice. Here are a few gameplay videos:
Gulf of Oman
Gulf of Oman is another remake of a classic Battlefield 2 map and is a more wide-open map than Strike at Karkand. There are wide stretches of road, freeway, and hills that make you an easy target for snipers if you don't have a vehicle handy. Be sure to keep an eye out for snipers perched atop the towering construction cranes that dominate the skyline. It'll be interesting to see if DICE keeps these sniper perches accessible via ladders because it removed a similar sniper spot on the Caspian Border map after the public beta. Check out the gameplay videos right here:
Back to Karkand is scheduled for release in December. If you preordered the limited edition, you've already got access to the map pack. Everyone else will have to fork over $15.
whoever was trying to snipe the guy on that crane couldn't snipe a barn door.
Every time when I play this game or watch a video about it, those missiles whistling by always scare the living crap out of me.
If only warlord from Special Forces Expansion pack was on there. What a great map...
Graphics - Awesome Sound - Excelent Nostalgia factor - Approved Battlefield Massive Battle Feel - DENIED It looks so small :| If u were on the River Fort it took you ages to get to the hotel and you had no idea what was going on there. Here if you get on a crane you can see people on every single flag? Voip, map size, big detailed map, working comm rose. These are indeed the things i miss the most from bf2.
Can't wait for this. Loved all these maps on BF2.
Can't wait for this. It'll already be out and ready to download by the time I can play BF3, so thats good.
Two words for you on Gulf of Oman mister sniper, "Bullet drop".
@sk8rlink You seem to be under the impression that I'm bashing the game, which is something I don't recall saying. "If you like CoD why not skip the BF3 sections." It's possible to like and/or own both, ya' know. "Avoid any problems or discussions." You're on a gaming website, seems like the kind of place to me where discussions about games would happen. "Most of the people I know already have the map pack with their Limited Edition." You get one map pack for free, then you'll have to fork out moneys to pay for any future map packs. What is it with this idea that anyone who even considers pointing out something that isn't necessarily fantastically positive about one game, MUST be a huge fan of it's leading competitor and therefore must have come here to troll and irritate the fanbase? All I'm saying is that people are too quick to turn their nose up at games and the people that play them based on petty things like hypocrisy and double-standards.
WAKE ISLAND !!!??
@terminator-ssd I agree with you that there is a lot of functionality in the game that is a little borked for now. For example, I absolutely hate the idiotic key and mouse button spamming they force you to do in the campaign. It is very obvious they left the campaign part to console devs and that is one of the reasons it came out so lame imo. If you use a gamepad, yeah, who cares about button spamming. But when you have a $100 gaming mouse, the last thing in the world you want to do is start spamming its buttons. Not only that, but we don't even know what "E" and "LEFT/RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON" are even supposed to really do - just spam them and you'll survive - don't know what they actually do. And doesn't it make more sense to hit "SPACE" once with "W" to climb up the side of the train than to have to pound "SPACE" 30 times to obtain the same result? Please, I don't want to have to buy a new keyboard too, ok? As to voip, they said they were studying the possibility of bringing it out later. I agree that squad voice should already be an option. You would not believe how many times I have to "type" that we need ammo or meds before somebody finally drops them. Just a tip, to join a different squad, first leave the squad you are in then choose another one with at least one spot open then click "join" below, and you should get in. Cheers! :)
awesome stuff cant wait :D
Where is the Wake Island Preview?? :(
@ prince__vlad THEY ARE ! its free to anyone who pre order the game it was common knowledge. as THE LIMITED EDITIONS SAID IT ON THE BOX
Ive seen bots play better than the enemies in this..
That's ripp-off. I already payed for battlefield 3! Couldn't they give that away for free? lol
@DeathwachMarine I remember, it was RFOM, and it was the catholic church, they didn't like monsters and firefights in their churches.
Still needs a snow map, Day and night versions of each map would also be cool. This game is awesome standalone yet the depth of the equipment and abilities gives you immediate ideas about how to apply them. I immediately thought: stealth fighter at night and a sea of flashlights
Dude - you're the worst shot ever!
@danielcliment I know, but last time a dev did that, they got sued for some rediculous reason.... I think it was Insomniac's RFOM. Anybody remember that?
I wonder if the entire structure will collapse...
@llyte_1up That's where we tend to fight wars. Washed out sh@thole countries.
Ah the memories!! Raging at spawn campers how I miss the aggravation.
@llyte_1up you are right! also I never understood why not they make maps from actual cities and real landmark, you know? How much fun would be playing somewhere that you actually recognize!!!
This is the first BF game I ever played and I must say I love it! At first it was hard to get use to the general lay-out of the game, smoothness, even sound! but the possibilities and variety on this game are just awesome, I had played CoD and MW since day1, and MW3 just got me to the limit of my "copy/paste" patience... enough...! this is a fresh, exiting game! IW, learn....
Great, looks like 4 more maps that look exactly like every other freaking map in this stupid game. Why can't we have more than ONE map that actually has color?!? If they're going to remake maps from previous games, why not use interesting ones with vegetation? I'm so sick of seeing dirt, sand, crumby buildings and warehouse containers!
Looking forward to it. Good thing i pre-ordered. Got the limited edition for INR 1499 - In India, that's roughly equal to $30! Loving the game so far. I'm so hooked to the multi-player that haven't even had the chance to finish the campaign.
@i_like_pie223 hey dude if you like COD why not skip the BF3 sections, you know, avoid any problems or discussions, and on the map pack note, how many COD maps can you cram into a BF map??? 6, 7 maybe? and most of the people I know already have the packs with their limited edition, no extra charge, so please refrain from negative comments. Peace man, enjoy your game and I'll enjoy mine
I got into a row with another Gamespot user in the comments section for Battlefield 3's PC review, he called me a "CoD fanboy who buys $15 map packs." After that, I find the closing statement of this article to be pretty funny.
cant wait till these maps are released, they look better than the current batch we have to play...LONG LIVE BF2!
sniper in the bottom video is obviously used to COD sniping
I'm going to Dubai for Christmas....but once i get there i'm just gonna stay indoors and play this
I ordered the limited edition on Amazon, cost me $49. Gives me the free DLC too ;-)
@_GRIM420_ so youre saying better map design sucks. okeyyy
from below "02:04"
haha love that Gulf of Oman video with both snipers firing at each other, completely missing :P and when the car runs over a guy whilst zoomed.
Wow... these videos just made me even more appreciative of my good ol' mouse+keyboard.
This guy has no aiming skills at all.
@lcdcc I'm a little disappointed that bots have been a very low priority for designers lately, it's always been a good way to practice with new weapons and vehicles aswell as just having a casual laid back break from feirce player vs player action..That being said with all the advancements next gen games have its no doubt alot harder to program bots to tranverse these maps. Not just dealing with pathfinding through terrain deformation and debris but thinking tactically, being aggresive and defensive when the situation calls for it. BRINK was an example that even when a game is designed with bots as a main focus its hard to get them right but i hope more games will think about it for next gen.
wow that sniper did suck... this isnt COD. got to aim abit higher at that range he expected that bullet to fly like a lazer or something.
knew first expansion would suck no way they give away a good one for free. and its out so early... more content that should have ben in the game the whole time.
@njai15 agreed i do not want 31 idiots screaming in my ears, god i would kill my self lol. im simply saying that squad chat should be available within the game. it is on consoles, and if they bug you, mute them. this simple option should be in the PC version. i know about teamspeak etc etc, but with those your using another program etc, a simple chat function should be in the game already if you get what i mean.
@Caldrin How could you even compare COD and BF3 map packs. With COD you're paying $15 for a kiddy map where the length of the map is the size of a well thrown grenade versus a Battlefield map which could holster 15 or more Small COD maps and still probably have space left over. I mean every control point in BF3 would be the size of 1 COD map alone.
@Terminator-SSD any serious pc game knows about vent, teamspeak, skype, mumble. Do you want 31 idiots screaming in your ear about dumb stuff? I agree with you on battle log and joining with friends though.
am i the only 1? im very upset that i cannot simulate(replicate) an online game against the bots. battlefield 1942 and battlefield 2 was awsome! choose a map, choose a game type, select vehicles of choice and select how many bots per side. NO LAG, NO BODY SLAGGING OFF, NO CHEATERS! think u get the message how can the old games and programmers make it happen but not the new more advanced? LAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!! very dissapointed......
I whish add Iron gator that battlefield 2 map
looks sick!
i just want them to to fix the problems on PC, lying about the PC being its lead platform shows that there are many problems, one being NO VOICE CHAT, i mean WTF, how the hell are we menna communicate to our team, i dont want to add EVERYONE to my battlelog account just to talk to them 'STUPID IDEA', joining friends is too hard and tiresome, cant join a chosen squads it add you by random, hit detection is all over the place, why are shotguns been toned down so much, i loved my shotgun in BF2 and BFBC2, and where is the spas 12. rpg's are far too low in damage. yes i rant, but god gave me this gift so i use it lol
I can't wait
DICE should've spent this time and effort creating brand new maps for the base game, Battlefield 3, rather than separating the community with this "expansion pack" full of maps we've already played for over 5 years now.
I hope they release something along the lines of a "Back to Jalalabad" map pack later...
