The sequel to Bf 1942 and Bf Vietnam

User Rating: 9.5 | Battlefield 2 PC
Battlefield Vietnam was a fun game but it came across feeling a little to similar to the original. Battlefield 2 nails everything the first to did and more. The most obvious change is the new and improved graphics engine known as the Refractor engine. It does a great job of immersing you in the game thanks to a cool shell shock effect and a very effective physics engine. The basic gameplay is ordinary FPS shooting action with seven different classes; special ops, sniper, assault, support, engineer, medic and anti-tank but it is done very well and tactics play an important role. There are dozens of different vehicles and weapons each of which complement each other making for exciting rock-paper-scissors combat. Unfortunately there only conquest mode to play where you fight for control of spawn points.

There are 12 maps ranging from urban firefights such as Strike at Karkand to Shonghua Stalemate which is a fight taking place in a swampy area in China. Each map is available in 16, 32 and 64 player sizes. The combat is mostly balanced but skillful pilots can make battles very one-sided despite the addition of anti-air missile turrets. Unfortunately for singleplayer fans only 10 maps are playable for you and the AI isn't too bright. Still singleplayer is fun and good for practicing in before trying multiplayer.

The multiplayer is amazing with heaps of incentive to keep playing in the form of awards, medals, badges and unlocks. The multiplayer also highlights the best aspect of the game; the squad and commander system. The commander is a position which any player can apply for and when they get it they have the ability to call in devastating artillery strikes, supply drops, activate UAVs to point out threats for your team, scans so the commander can see everything on the battlefield and later{in the 1.3 patch} call in vehicle drops to support your troops.

Squad leaders can request these things from the commander making it feel like your actually in a war zone. Built-in VOIP allows fellow squad members to communicate with each other and commanders to talk to their squads leaders. The commander call-ins are not gimmicks they are vital to victory and a good commander is often the difference between victory and defeat.

Bf2 is an amazing game that combines intense shooting action with RPG elements and tactics. Despite its age this game is a must-have that will keep you entertained for a very long time.
