Instead of creating a whole new review for all these games, I just decided to use my old reviews of these games, to tell you why this is a fantastic multiplayer collection.

BATTLEFIELD 1942 REVIEW:

Battlefield 1942 is a multiplayer game that centers on World War 2. As you can tell from its name, it’s all about fighting on the battlefield. Absolutely huge battlefields that are so big that unless you have a vehicle, forget about it. Battlefield 1942 is a wonderful game mainly due to its great multiplayer factor and up to 64 players online. The downside is, unless you plan to go online, you have to put up with the idiotic AI that’s on the offline section. There pretty brainless and really bring the game down.

Battlefield 1942 is highly addictive. It is so much fun that you can be playing it for months and months due to the amount of people you can have on each level. There’s about a dozen levels and you can either be the Americans/British/Russians or the Germans. Which ever one you choose, you will start with your squad and be thrown into battle. The big problem with Battlefield 1942 is it’s so huge that you can be wondering around for a long time without seeing a single foe or even an ally sometimes. The game is all about capture the flag, stand next to a flag for quite a while and it will switch from the enemy’s flag to yours. As it switches to yours, you can now spawn there if you die and as you get more than half of the flags you can then take the points. The more flags you have, the more points you get. Some missions however want you to only control the 4 or so flags and if you lose even one then you lose the points being taken off the enemy’s side.

Some of the maps are all about taking all of the enemy’s flags, such as the raid on Guatemala and when you do this, you have a few flags that can’t be taken, and these are circled in red with a line going through it to cross it off so you can’t take that flag. This means you have to defend your territory until you win or the enemy takes all of your flags. Another type will have both sides with 1 flag and then in the middle is 1 or 2. All of them can be taken and this is the most popular type in Battlefield 1942.

The coolest part about the game is the driving parts. You have lots and lots of different vehicles at your disposal. From tanks to jeeps to even trucks that have a machine gun at the top, it all works, although many times you will need multiple people to do all of this since you can’t drive and shoot at the same time.

This is the biggest problem and the main reason why you should go online and face other people. The AI on both sides is not too good, no matter what difficulty you have it on. Your allies will do such things as quickly jump into your van to be the machine gunner just to leave and start running on foot. It makes absolutely no sense and really brings the game down. Sometimes they will just wonder around and not do anything, making for a pretty frustrating play that makes you quickly want to go online.

Another problem is the lag. You can have some serious slowdown online, but offline the game seems to run fairly smoothly. The more people you have and the size of your machine all affects this.

Battlefield 1942 looks pretty good. Not superb though. All of the environments are fantastic, but the character models and textures are really bland and somewhat blocky, still this isn’t a game you’ll play for graphics, this is a game you’ll play for gameplay.

In Battlefield 1942 you choose between 6 different classes. All of them are unique but I highly recommend that if you’re just starting out, use the rocket launcher and medic classes. Both of them are good because they can destroy tanks or heal people. The other classes include assault which you get a big machine gun, sniper which you get a high class nipper rifle or the unique engineer where you can fix tanks and such. If you haven’t figured it out, each class has their pros and cons and they can all work together bringing out the multiplayer aspect of the game really well.

The sound in the game is ok. The main theme that plays for Battlefield 1942 is fun to listen to, but the weapon sounds aren’t too much to brag about, the voice acting is ok, and overall the game doesn’t have any music while fighting, making moments where you’re just by yourself somewhat quiet and oddly boring, since this game is so much fun.

The places you all fight in are battlefields that were in World War 2 such as the fight of Berlin. Battlefields all across the Pacific and Europe can be found in this game and you play as each of the 3 allied forces or the Germans and their weaponry is all different, but the classes are all the same. So for the machine guns, the Americans will have the Thomson while the Germans have the MP 40.

The coolest part about the classes is whenever you die, you can pick up other persons weapons, which he might be another class, when he dies his bag of equipment will fall and if it has a wrench sign on it for instance, and you know it’s an engineer. Its things like this that makes the game lots of fun so you aren’t picking up a random type of ammo and equipment. Sometimes you have to use smart skills such as being an engineer, but your tank that was following you to the flag you were going to take blew up. Your then low on health and you have to pick up the equipment the medic you just killed had and use his items, you then have to go back and switch out your medic equipment to your engineer equipment to fix the jeep that is taking heavy fire. It’s moments like these that make Battlefield 1942 so much fun and that’s the main reason why I recommend it.

BATTLEFIELD 1942 ROAD TO ROME REVIEW:

Battlefield 1942 road to Rome is the first expansion to the successful Battlefield series. Battlefield 1942 road to Rome has 6 new maps and all of the original Battlefield 1942 maps. There are also new weapons, vehicles, and environments with this expansion. It would have been nice is there was just a bit more of all of this, since lets face it, 6 maps and a few new vehicles and weapons just doesn’t cut it for an expansions, but fans will be pleased with the new maps for sure.

The new maps are both urban and rural and they are set in Italy. The Italian is the new Axis country you can play as or go against. All of the new maps take place in Italy and for the most part, they are all well intact.

Battlefield 1942 road to Rome doesn’t really mess with the Battlefield 1942 formula. All of the maps have the same type of gameplay where you try to take each others flags and dominate the map. Although it hasn’t been messed with, it is worth noting that 6 maps aren’t too much for an expansion. Although there are different types of tanks and jeeps that share the same looks the Italians had in World War 2, and some Italian rifles and machine guns have been added, ultimately Battlefield 1942 road to Rome just doesn’t add a whole lot to the Battlefield universe.

The graphics for the most part, haven’t been messed with and still have the same looks as they did in the original Battlefield 1942. Although they have aged a bit, some of the particle effects and explosions have been tweaked, making a title that does stand out a bit more than its predecessor.

Battlefield 1942 road to Rome has some excellent sound. With the weapons fire as good as ever, and huge explosions that make you jump, Battlefield 1942 road to Rome adds to some great weapon sounds and explosions that is something you would almost expect from a title like this. It is worth noting though that there is no real music that plays, so since most of the maps are pretty big, it can oddly quiet when all you hear is your own footsteps.

Battlefield 1942 road to Rome is a worthy expansion that fans of the series have already bought and are probably enjoying right now, and since most people do love the Battlefield formula of capture the flag, most people probably will get this expansion. As I said before, it would have been nice if there was a bit more to the expansion though. It would have been nice if there was a bit more to the expansion though.

BATTLEFIELD 1942 SECRET WEAPONS OF WW 2 REVIEW:

Back in 2002 a PC game called Battlefield 1942 got released and it was an instant hit. With great multiplayer and fluid combat, it was easily one of the best multiplayer PC games ever made. After the first expansion, Battlefield 1942 road to Rome, which was a solid expansion, the next expansion in the Battlefield 1942 series is also quite solid. Although the type of gameplay and combat are still intact and un-changed, the graphics have been upgraded, along with some new weaponry, vehicles, and maps. Although it doesn’t reinvent the genre, it’s a solid expansion that continues the great Battlefield formula.

Although Battlefield 1942 secret weapons of WW two is a rather lengthy title for a game, it’s a much more improved expansion than Road to Rome. Secret weapons of WW 2 is basically a new take on the Battlefield maps, only this time you’re in Germany once again. Because of this, you might think that there won’t be any new vehicles and weapons, just a bunch of maps that look the same as previous Battlefield 1942 maps, but you’d be right and wrong.

While the maps aren’t that much different from previous Battlefield 1942 releases, there are plenty of new vehicles at hand that are pretty cool looking, if not a bit on the fantasy side. The new take on vehicles were probably used in WW 2 and they look almost futuristic. One vehicle is a motorcycle with a side where a passenger can be with a machine gun there. Another one is a tank that can float on water and can carry approximately ten people. All of the new vehicles sound about as great as they drive and the controls are pretty precise, which is just icing on top of the cake.

On the downside, weaponry hasn’t really gone anywhere. Apart from the new Italian weapons in Rode to Rome, honestly, the only new addition is more grenades. It would have been nice to have seen some new weapons as well, but considering that it’s the German take on WW two again, and you’ve been fighting them the entire time, it’s no surprise that there’s no new weaponry.

The maps have also been upgraded. Although not that much difference in terrain, there’s a lot more detail to everything with the improved graphics engine. It really makes the game look cleaner with better textures and some really large levels. Although flying is the best way to go, it still makes babies cry and honestly is tough to do. Although it’s not so much about flying as it is landing, which is remarkably difficult and makes driving the easiest way to get around these huge maps, it’s a continued problem with the franchise.

Battlefield 1942 Secret weapons off WW 2 sound are also un-changed. No much really plays except in the menus, but the improved weapon sounds make up for that. Still, it can be eerie to be running in a lone canyon with nothing but strange silence.

Although there is a lot more to the gameplay in Battlefield 1942 Secret weapons of WW two, you need Battlefield 1942 and the expansion Road to Rome to play this game, you can read my separate reviews for both of those games.

That’s about the only new things that have been added. Just like in Road to Rome, not a lot has been added to the fantastic Battlefield 1942, but with baby-step improvements like this, it won’t be long before Battlefield 1942 takes over franchises like Quake and Unreal tournament. Ok, maybe that’s pushing it, but still this is a great expansion, so if you have the two previous games and you enjoyed them, then you can’t go wrong with Battlefield 1942 Secret weapons of WW two.

BATTLEFIELD VIETNAM REVIEW:

The Battlefield 1942 series was amazing. I really loved the huge maps, lots of vehicles, and intense moments when you tried to take the flags in each of the levels. The good news is, all of the great multiplayer is still intact, but the maps are much smaller and the vehicles aren't really the stars of the game, it's more about the foot action. With lots of new weaponry, both on the Vietnam and American section and much more weaponry to choose from and some outstanding music scores/weapon sounds, really makes for an enjoyable title overall. I still wish the vehicles were more of the stars, but the maps are much smaller, thus making it much more intense and less long walks with nothing happening that will likely freak you out.

Battlefield Vietnam doesn't really have a story, well you can listen to speeches given by both the US and Asia during load times, but that's about it. The really great thing about this game is that it's pure multiplayer and nothing else. So if your a fan of either the Battlefield franchise or Unreal tournament, this game will definitely appeal to you.

The big thing about Battlefield Vietnam that is very interesting, is the fact that the AI is very well done. They put up one hell of a fight and never let you win at any cost. The bad thing about this, is at times you can almost feel like your fighting the war by yourself, since your allies don't really help, but thankfully, they do help at the right times, and the AI isn't all that, so the difficulty isn't to bad, although when the AI, either friendly or foe, get into a vehicle, they tend to really rule the road and be spot on when shooting.

Battlefield Vietnam does have some really big flaws. For starters, there isn't to much reliance on vehicles since most of the terrain is hilly and full of trees, and the maps are much smaller, which is a good and bad thing. It's good because you can get a lot more fighting in, but it's also bad because you really don't have a lot of places to move, so you might get fragged like crazy, thus making vehicles almost obsolete.

Still, this is a game that is all about capture the flag, and with all the maps and different terrains, this is a game that you will be playing for a while. Plus, the sound is phenominal. The few voice acting is perfect and weapon sounds will make you jump each time, plus the musical score will make you cry, it's so great.

I really loved Battlefield Vietnam, and in many ways it's better, but in some ways it isn't. Still if you loved the original Battlefield 1942 series, then this will be an interesting change of pace. It's really not the same type of game, so even if you didn't like the Battlefield 1942 series, you might enjoy this game.

As you can see, Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam are multiplayer games un-like any other. In many ways, there better than Halo two, Unreal tournament, and Quake, but if multiplayer isn't your thing, then I would avoid this collection set all together. But if you like multiplayer games at all, forget about getting each of these games seperatly, just get them in this fantastic, huge collection box set.
