Finally, a comic book hero gets a fitting game

User Rating: 8.5 | Batman: Arkham Asylum X360
Batman: Arkham Asylum wasn't one of my must have titles this year. Although Batman and Darth Vader are my favorite childhood superhero and villain, I didn't give the game much thought. But after a few previews and gameplay videos here on GS, I bought it for my son for his birthday. Best move by the sly gamer father since convincing my wife HE needed a PS3 a few years back!
Batman: AA is a beautiful game, although the detective mode is needed throughout much of the game, which takes away some of the beauty, it's still a fantastic gritty, textured rendition of AA. To keep the game basically all on AA was a brilliant move, much like Rapture in Bioshock, there is no need for another environment in this game. The combat is basic, but that's not where this game shines IMO. It's the gadgets, strategy and storyline that make the game. Without spoiling anything, it all adds up to a great overall story.
One of the highlights of Batman:AA is the Riddler Challenges. At first I thought nothing of them starting off, now they are a full on addiction. This game, IMO, would have been a rental without them. They are varied, some easy, some very hard, and add tremendous depth and length to the game. The challenge mode is ok, I've only tried a few levels, but I'm sure I'll spend more time there after I finish the game. My only complaint, and it's a steady one this generation, is that the game is a bit too easy. The hardest setting should have been available from the start, but that gives me an excuse to replay this fantastic game.
In closing, if your a Batman fan, this is a can't miss game, especially during this lull in releases.
