Good story, disappointing battle system. Choose which one is more important to you.
And second of all this review will be much shorter than my common review, because I have little to say about Baroque, since I spent only an hour or two with it.
The storyline is really intriguing. The characters and the character design are most smart. The music is pretty nice as well. Voice acting is brilliant. These are the best aspects of this game.
Less good aspect is graphics, which is still good. But it's just way too blurry. Reminds me a little of Chaos Legion. And camera is awful.
Now the worst aspects are the gameplay, which includes both the RPG and battle systems. As well as NPC and world interactions. RPS system in this game is way too simple. Levels have not much meaning behind them, but you can increase your stats through using different items. Battle is just ugly. You can't dodge, you can't block, and the lock-on function has no use whatsoever. Neither do you acquire abilities through leveling. There is no magics, no special moves that are bound onto the character. Swords and armors have some special shots however. But in none portion does it improve the battle, which is just plain no matter how far you go. And don't believe the trailers, there is no magics as I said before. These are just the items you use. And mind you, your inventory is very limited, and these items are very hard to come by. All and all a very boring gameplay.
It's up to you in the end. If you like a good storyline and great character design and don't mind the overall platitude of the gameplay, this might just be a game for you. As for me I'm always on a lookout for a good gameplay primary. It is nice if a game has a good storyline, it only makes it tastier. However a game remains a game, and the primal function of which is to entertain the player. You won't find much entertainment here I'm afraid. It would've been easier if Baroque was a book, or a movie, or an anime series. But there is just too little game in this game. Too bad.
