Boring and over-complicated, and why the HELL is the main character American

User Rating: 5 | Assassin's Creed PS3
I think it's fair to say that as the hype surrounding the Playstation 3 reached its climax, Assassin's Creed was one of the most eagerly anticipated next-gen games. Predictably it didn't quite live up to the hype, however it still performed surprisingly well upon its release and was given *very* generous ratings.

I bought this on ebay for about £5 a few weeks ago. Thoroughly unimpressed. I admit I didn't stick with it long enough to pick up on the meat of the storyline, I believe the main character was sent to a pretty big city to assassinate various people by the time I gave up on it. A good couple of hours in anyway. I was still baffled and unclear of what the hell was going on by that stage anyway.

What struck me straight away was the overly complex controls. I tried to stick with it I really did, I told myself that they'd sink in gradually, but no they never did. In fact no, I tell a lie. What struck me immediately was that while every character, quite rightly had the correct eastern accent, why did MY character have a full on American accent?! Argh it just seemed ridiculous and it always stuck out like a sore thumb, very difficult to ignore.

I'm limited in what I can say on this, having not played it long enough. I'll soon be selling it on though I'm afraid. I quite vividly recall a sequence where you have to ride a horse to get to the aforementioned city... it was totally pointless.

The difficulty is quite high, I find. This is mainly because of awkward controls though. Awkward controls, an awful targetting system, and no clear sense of direction from the game about what on earth you're supposed to be doing. Sure, I support giving the player as much freedom as possible, within reason, but christ I expect a little direction?!

The concept was good. And the trailers really, really built it up. Graphically it is truly stunning, but I think it's always been pretty clear that's what the main selling point is. Personally I recommend saving up for something a bit newer. I have my eye on the new Batman game. Bit of trivia for you.
