Alone in the Dark is an awesome game!

First of all... the story. You play as Edward Carnby, a man who is lost both in who he is and what his mission is. You wake up in a bed and are led by strange men whom are holding you and another man hostage, to your would be death... only to survive and have to spend the rest of the game figuring out who you are... and what your mission in life is. The entire gameplay is centered around Central Park in New York City. You literlally have the entire park to play in for the entire game. You play above ground as well as below in the tunnels and sewers. Putting together clues and scavenger hunting for any and all items that can aid you in your quest. You are also aided by a woman named Sarah... who helps you to unlock the secrets of the park and your past. This of course is not as easy as it would seem because you are constantly being chased and or attacked by Zombies... who yes... thirst for your blood and death. So while trying to unlock clues to your past... you must also defend yourself and Sarah (on occasion) to survive the night!
The graphics... are just awesome for this type of Survival Horror game. Kinda bland colors... but the lighting and shadows are very nicely done. Most of the gameplay is very dark as you are playing in the nighttime anyhow. You have a flashlight to help light your way... but more emphasis was put into the fire in this game. Fire is the key to your survival... and they did a marvelous job on the effects of it. The park I must say was very well made. Down to the last detail... with ever exterior building in place to statues that are there today in the game as well. You literally feel as if you are in Central Park... even though it is a very bad state of disarray!
The sound... is just simply well done too! If you have sound surround... you are in for a real treat! You can actually hear the zombies and creatures as they come at you from all sides. Fire that burns sounds very real and you can hear it as it ignites as well as it burns slowly out. They also put an awesome soundtrack to this game, which if you purchased that version, you will have the 2nd CD with the music on it.
The most interesting thing about Alone in the Dark was the inventory screen. You actually keep everything in your jacket and when you access it... it is as if you are looking down the front of you at both sides of your inside of your jacket. You can then pan from left to right or right to left and access anything in your inventory. That is just the start... because the most awesome thing about this game is the fact that you can play like Mac Gyver and make your own weapons. For instance... say you found a bottle of alcohol and then found a rag. You can combine them to make a Molotov Cocktail. Or maybe you found the same bottle of Alcohol... and poured it onto your bullets for your gun... now you have fire bullets. you see... Fire is the key to fighting all of the enemies in the game. They must be destroyed by fire and fire alone. You can take a roll of double sided sticky tape... tape up a bottle of alcohol or even a spray can... toss it at a wall... and when the enemy comes by... shoot it and BOOM! Instant death to them! Very cool. You can even lob a bottle at something or some enemy in the game... and shoot it in the air and have a very spectacular explosion that is both pretty to see as well as very effective on enemies. You are limited to what you can carry so you must pick and choose very carefully... but each player of this game can generate his or her own playing style... which makes this game very unique. All objects in the game are basically there for you to use. You can find a chair... put it over a fire to light it... and use it both as a touch to see your way around... or as a weapon to kill zombies. You can shoot a car's gas tank... and watch everything around it explode and burn just like it would in real life... slowly burning out and then smoldering! Take a hot dog cart... set it on fire and roll it down a hill at some zombies... and watch them explode to their fiery death. So many options to make and ways to play... make it fun for all.
The only two concerns about this game I keep hearing about from users is that the controls are very sloppy for both manipulating your character... as well as driving. I personally have played games that are alot worse in both aspects. It did take a little getting used to controlling Edward around... but then again... I was very happy when I did because if you had played any of the original series... you would have seen that they kept true to how it always used to be. That for me was one of the more nostalgic things about this game. As far as the driving goes... I actually thought it wasn't all that bad. If you have played any "Real" racing games and know what drifting is all about... then you would understand the mechanics of how the driving works in this game. There are other games out on the market with both characters and car sequences that I feel are even tougher to manipulate than this game was. After only an hour or so of gameplay... I found it very easy to manipulate my character around the screen and drive very easily.
In conclusion... Alone in the Dark is in my opinion an awesome game that I feel has alot of new gameplay ideas brought to the market for the gamers out there. Both graphically and musically it is very well put together. The storyline is constantly keeping you in the wanting to know more about what is going to happen next. I loved the inventory system the best... and feel that this game has excellent replay value. If you are a fan of survivor horror games... and want a different style of pace... this would be a game you should check into!
