It drives me nuts because I had the most fun with this game when I first played it but now it just feels odd... I can't quite explain it but the fighting controls are exasperating.
I know it's just because the newest installments have smoother controls, but being knocked down when fighting and staying on the ground for a while is not fun.
Is the version that comes with Revelations improved in this aspect?

I think the version that comes with Revelations has not really been changed (since I quit it, like, 15 minutes in).

Though, I do think the beauty of all of the games in the series is trying to do things well rather than just do them. You can plat a lot of these games and completely miss the best parts, for instance taking forts in ACIII without triggering open conflict. You can bull rush so many things that have nice setups to go for stealth.

On the flipside, the first time I did an undetected high profile diving assassination onto a main target was quite nice. But the sometimes touchy nature of stealth in games like this can make people simply gloss over and bulldoze through using brute force instead. It also doesn't necessarily help that you're basically invincible in combat. E.g. you versus 40 isn't enough to give even the slightest pause.
