Zenimax files to extend Prey trademark

Bethesda parent publisher moves to extend legal coverage of IP as fate of Prey 2 remains in question.

Zenimax Media has filed with the United States Patent & Trademark Office to extend its trademark for the Prey intellectual property.

The company this month filed three separate applications covering television shows, online games, magazine, comic books, and feature films, among other things.

Asked what these filings may mean for the future of the Prey brand, a company representative declined to comment.

Zenimax originally picked up the Prey intellectual property in 2009.

Prey 2 remains in development at Human Head Studios, though Bethesda said a year ago this month that development on the project "has not progressed satisfactorily." Its current status is unknown, though a developer later commented that the project is in limbo.

Disclosure: GameSpot parent company CBS CEO Leslie Moonves is a Zenimax Media board member.

The trailer for Prey 2 had me interested in the game. Would like to see what they've been working on and what changes have been made (if any) since the trailer.

ever since the trailer for this and the small gameplay footage I've been hanging for this. I can understand some people's reservations about variety of gameplay and ingenuity, however, I love AAA titles that imagine sci-fi world's like this, similar to how mass effect did.

To me, this can only be seen as positive. Will patiently wait 4 this one.

Aesthetically, the game look great, but the open world FPS bounty hunter thing is becoming too stagnated and tiring without any true innovative gameplay..

Bethesda realizes that they haven't had much financial success as a publisher, allowing these third party developers try to take the mantle on these larger scale games. Everything they develop is golden, but their first few games as a publisher were duds (Fallout New Vegas, Rage etc.).

The parent company Zenimax is staking a lot on this IP.  The first one was very innovative, felt fresh and just was damn good - therefore became somewhat of a cult hit.  They want to keep that following, and expand - by not releasing another dud.

I don't blame them and applaud them learning from their mistakes. They've apparently have not given up on the game being they've extended trademarks on it.  I'm willing to wait. Plenty of Bioshock, Deadspace, and Far Cry to get into until it's polished and ready for release.

This has fallen into the Kingdom Hearts III, The Last Guardian territory. Shame really because from the demo it looked like a game well into its development phase.  I hope it can gain back the lost momentum and find a place in the next gen titles.

The trailer you guys...my God, the trailer. That alone has sold this game to me a thousand times over. Such a great concept! Make it happen!

Good that they're at least still considering it. Really want to play the game, but if they needed to extend it, may not see it till next gen, which would be a shame.

I really hope Prey 2 is canceled.  No Tommy equals no Prey.  I want the sequel we were promised at the end of the first game, not "Generic Shooter 50,621".

I get not letting it go further considering how the supposed quality has been, but if that is full of crap, I would like for the IP to go elsewhere. Maybe to 2K?

I think it'll come out on the next gen systems,  but with a different name.   It's too different from the first game to be associated with it.   Make it a fresh new series and back it with next gen power.

I really hope this game doesn't hit the bucket. The E3 demo from 2012 (or was it 2011?) looked fantastic. It would be a shame to let this game go.

Just give it to other publisher if you don't wanna make it Zenimax.

Spartan_418

well, at least Bethesda and Human Head have some quality standards, and aren't willing to release a game in an unfinished garbage state (cough*Gearbox*cough)

really enjoyed Prey 1, it was my very first 360 game. hope this game does finally come out some day

@Scynt Why would that be a shame? I think that would be fantastic. What they had shown was an interestingly beautiful cyberpunk-ish world, and to have that be enhanced on next-gen I'm all for.

@DrKill09 You obviously knew nothing about Prey 2 then.

It was far from "generic shooter."

It was actually an open  world game set on the alien homeworld where you played a human bounty hunter. With a kind of Blade runner'ish style and aesthetic.

Also Tommy was going to be in the game in some way (but you didn't play him).

@berserker66666 I'll pray that Prey 2 doesn't fall Prey 2 cancellation or the release of a bad product.

@Spartan_418 I don't know about that. Bethesda makes good games but I'd have a hard time keeping a straight face saying something like this considering basically every game they have made is littered with bugs, technical issues and balance problems.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@Lambchopzin In this case Bethesda is the publisher.

in which case I should have also mentioned Sega as being responsible for Colonial Marines' unfinished state

@Lambchopzin @Spartan_418

There is a diference between Bethesda Softworks(the publisher),and Bethesda Game Studios(the developer),as Dishonored was nearly bug free.

Lambchopzin
Lambchopzin

@bogorad @Lambchopzin @Spartan_418 Yes I'm well aware there is a difference, but Dishonored is one game that Bethesda publishes. That doesn't absolve them of all the issues some of their other published titles have had.

Point being Bethesda (publisher or developer) certainly are no where near perfect when it comes to releasing unfinished games.
