Zelda and Dynasty Warriors come together for "Hyrule Warriors" on Wii U in 2014

Nintendo reveals all-new Wii U project today during Nintendo Direct.

by

The next Legend of Zelda game has been revealed and it may not be what you expected.

"Hyrule Warriors," a mashup of Tecmo Koei's Dynasty Warriors and Nintendo's Legend of Zelda franchises, is scheduled to launch in 2014 and the name is not final, Nintendo said. Importantly, this is not the previously announced new Zelda game for Wii U led by series producer Eiji Aonuma, but rather an all-new project.

In a short video (below), Nintendo showed Zelda protagonist Link taking on a series of monsters with weapons including a sword, bombs, and his famous spin attack. The game will feature the same battle-style as the Dynasty Warriors

We'll have more from today's Nintendo Direct later this morning. Keep checking back for more.

Twilight Princess was my last attempt with the Zelda series. That game was awfully the exact same thing as the ones before it, but done wrong. This looks really interesting.

Dynasty Warrior games are some of the most hated yet most popular games of all time. And I assume that the popularity has contributed to the 8 titles that have came out. I will also assume this is going to be more popular in Japan than anywhere else.

Next, from Nintendo:  Mario meets attorney Phoenix Wright -- who persuades Mario to give up plumbing and go to law school instead.

The result:  Super Mario Court.

People complain there's no 3rd party games.

Bayonetta 2 gets funded. People complain

People complain there's no first party games.

Mario 3D World gets made to high ratings. People complain

People complain there isn't a new zelda game

Lets be honest people. Nothing Nintendo does will ever make you happy.

How would this work? I think it's an interesting idea, but are there really enough characters to use in this game compared to the Dynasty Warriors games?

Surely… this must be some sort of twisted joke. It… it can't be real? Someone please tell me it's not real!

Brandon, I agree about Microsoft, and do enjoy the indies on the playstation. Gabor, I agree with the last sentence completely, not just for Nintendo, but for all game companies.

People want a new Console Zelda game is what they mean, which has been two years. I think this game looks good but it is not a "real" Zelda game it is a spin-off made in the style of dynasty warrior.

I definitely agree. I've been playing Zelda games since I was like, five years old, and I get really pissed when I see all these people saying it's going to suck because "NOT REAL ZELDA". I've even seen someone say "Can't they go back to real Zelda games? It's been forever since the last normal one AKA A Link Between Worlds." Seriously! That was less than a month ago. You just got a new Zelda game. You can wait another year until a new one comes out. I am personally very excited for this spin-off.

I don't like how a Warriors game get wasted with Zelda :p Link doesn't belong in fights against armies, he belongs in small dungeons with lots of challenges, not into a mindless hack n' slay you play to relax after a hard day of work

If Zelda was like COD we would be getting 1 or 2 main games and a few spin offs for mobile every year, so no its not even close to being worse!

Having played Samurai Warriors for the PS2 with my sister and being bored to tears with it, I got to say... sorry Nintendo. I love Zelda, but I'm skipping this one.

@bunchanumbers At least Nintendo doesn't wreck your game by making you sign in like KI did to those guys who were having a Tournament. They got the DRM thing right in the middle of the Tournament. And Gamespot ignores this actual real news.

It's not a legend of Zelda game, so that's stopping it from being on the timeline.

I dream of the day that "fans" of Zelda stop making everything fit into a timeline and just enjoy the individual games on their own merit so Nintendo can start running wild with ideas instead trying to force every game into some fictional arbitrary timeline.

Elem187
Elem187

As a long time fan (played the first when it came out when I was 7 and every one since), I could careless about stupid timelines. I just worry about playing each game as is instead over analyzing timelines.... It would be great if Eiji just made the game exactly how he wanted without trying to fit everything into a timeline to appease the most anal retentive of "fans"

Nintendo should experiment with their franchises in the hands of third party's... Eiji is still overseeing the directing, so we don't have much to worry about.

There is more call of Doodies and maddens than Zelda, and Zelda has been around forever.... Either you don't know what you are talking about or you have no idea what you are talking about. Thanks for informing us of your gross ignorance.

@nintendoboy16 You do realize it's not the new Legend of Zelda right? This is just a sort of spinoff, not the next big Legend of Zelda game that was announced.

Glongold
Glongold

Every games outlet not just GS, but yeah. People want Nintendo to make graphically violent games to appease the old gamers that grew up with the NES. I'd wager that's where most of the backlash is coming from but Nintendo was not responsible for the many of the hits that graced its wares back in the day. Times have changed not because of Nintendo necessarily but simply because other companies have joined in the market and have attracted away some of the third-parties. It has almost nothing to do with what Nintendo has been producing because its been consistent since its foray in the gaming world. Nintendo has always done what its doing but the plethora of games back then makes it hard to see that until now.

nintendoboy16
nintendoboy16

@faceless-mask Oh, I'm aware. Still doesn't mean I want to buy it. I'll wait for E3 2014 when Aonuma will talk about the mothership Zelda.
