Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's Wheelie Breakers Hands-On

It's Yu-Gi-Oh! meets futuristic racing in this card-battle hybrid game from Konami.

by

Combine the Yu-Gi-Oh! card-collecting phenomenon with futuristic racing and you get the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Wheelie Breakers for the Nintendo Wii. The game is a departure from the endlessly deep card-battling games on other platforms and looks to combine friendly controls with a touch of the collectible strategizing that keeps Yu-Gi-Oh! players engrossed. We had a chance to play the game during Konami's recent spring press event in San Francisco.

Racing bikes and card collecting combine in the latest Yu-Gi-Oh! game for Wii.

The game will have three modes of play: a quick-start grand prix mode that will let you get into the action right away, a story mode that will take you through the various characters and card types that will be found in the game, and split-screen multiplayer action for up to four players on the same system. We gave the grand prix mode a couple of tries and found out that, as you might expect from a Yu-Gi-Oh! game, there's more going on during a race than a simple sprint to the finish line.

You use both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk to play the game. The Nunchuk is for handling your bike, and the Wii Remote is responsible for the card-based summoning and spellcasting. The bikes themselves handle in a simplistic manner, and it quickly becomes obvious that victory in the grand prix will be less due to your ability to stick to the racing line than to your skill with your deck of cards.

You start the race with a number of cards available to you from your deck that can be configured as you like beforehand. These cards include spells that can have positive effects on your rider (such as giving you a temporary speed boost) or negative effects on your opponents (such as reducing their hit points). The spell cards are nice, but you'll likely get the most use from the summon cards, which will summon a Yu-Gi-Oh! creature to accompany you as you speed along the track. You can then use the summoned beast to attack riders ahead of (or behind) you. In addition, any attacks directed at you will be taken by your summoned creature.

Based on our experience, it's temping to burn through your cards quickly. Strategy-minded players, though, will realize there's a time and place for every card's use. In addition, once you go through your cards, you'll have to earn more action points (by driving over specific spots on the track) to free up new cards during the race. With characters and creatures pulled from the relatively new Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's TV series, Wheelie Breakers looks to take on the kart-racing phenomenon, while still catering to the series' card-collecting roots. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

This isn't a Yu-Gi-Oh game anymore, its a racing game with weapons, its like Mario carts only with a Yu-Gi-Oh theme.

personally I think this game will be hard due to the fact that you have to steer your runner and duel at the same time but it should be more interesting because of it

The real gameplay, that game really needs if far to be found, you do not even need duelling to win the game, as long you come in first, duelling is only to slow down the opponent not to defeat then Why can't they just bring Stardust Accelerator to the big screen like to YuGiOh online, they killing the brand by themselves by only making crap

Technically, Yu-Gi-Oh is gothic theme, & motorbikes is gothic like.

FZero meets Yu-Gi-Oh? Anyway, if it's more fun then the Gamecube's Falsebound Kingdom (which it was fun seeing the monsters in 3D), then Konami will be on the right track.

It's gonna be a flop not even thebrand name can save this title

Hmm, by reading it, is it like a free-for-all instead of a normal Speed Duel using speed spells? Either way. I'll wait until we see videos of how it is like, and if it contains those Synchro monsters. I'm not talking about the normal synchro monsters like Stardust, But the other Variety. Either way, I want to see a video if we have one.

Whether or not the game is going to be another Falsebound Kingdom failure or not, I'm going to give credit to the game makers for trying anyway. I would be some what terrified to come up with a video game based on a concept as broad as Speed Duels (which, in reality, look very cool on the show and bring a fresh aspect to dueling, despite what critics say). But so far it sounds like they are on the right track. While it may turn out the Duel Runner racing is weak, but hopefully not, it should give the player a unique dueling experience different than the traditional duel.

The leagend came back...in new addition cards but make sure you not fall dwon from your bike.

Viper_1989
Viper_1989

Erm... actually, having a look at the screenshots has made me a bit sceptical about my own opinions, considering the card effects all affect speed and are not what the actual card effect is. If they do focus more on the dueling then great, but if they do go the racing route then they're no better than Crash Bandicoot or Sonic the Hedgehog (actually does anyone know of a successful Kart knock off, apart from Mario)

beny_pimpster
beny_pimpster

i pity the fools who think this is a racing game cause it like viper_1989 said the games at 75% dueling and 25% racing but like in the show it doesnt matter how fast you go but how fast you drain your opponents LP :)

Viper_1989
Viper_1989

It's not just a racing game! It's a slight variation on the 5Ds series' Turbo Duel. I'd put money on it that the game is 75% focused on duelling and 25% focused on racing. As I said before, don't knock it for being a racing game if you've never watched 5Ds.

So, let me get this straight. This is just a racing game with a few YGO elements involved? Huge disappointment. Many players have been forced out of YGO (now a dead game) due to its absolutely insane money demand, and lots of players like me want the games badly so we can still play the game. But this is just a disappointment.

Yugioh 5Ds Rules, and who says the other way is a noob! This game isn't going to be one of the greatest in history, but I'm sure it will be fairly enjoyable for fans. Noobs and yugi haters, scam!

I agree with everyone in saying this is probably going to be a horrible game. Everyone who loved YuGiOh originally lost their love for it after they started GX(I think it might be because it just got to confusing.) I would reccomend passing on this game, because it's probably just a game where you race and collect cards on the go.

so this is another mario kart ripoff is what ur saying. way to be original guys btw. what happened to the old Yu-gi-oh that we know and love? With the actual kid Yu-gi and the millenium puzzle. Anyways, this game is gonna suck

I'm YuGiOh! fan, I like the 5D's series until now (better than GX) I have a store of YuGiOh! in my city (www.yugiohdam.es.tl), when I hear this game'll come in, expected a lot, but not these, the thing I always whant is a nice VG whit the normal gameplay of the TCG and updateable, thats a lot to ask? these is just crap, I love to play YuGiOh! TCG and this game have nothing to of that except the images of the cards... YUGIOH! FANS DON'T BUY IT (unless you whant the promo-cards).

MiragePrince
MiragePrince

its not a racing game . for those of you who dont watch 5ds , the game has to be like this cuz in the anime there are things called speed counters and there are monsters' effects and spells called speed spells which depend on them so they made riding duels or it wouldnt be 5ds .

The Yu-Gi-Oh series died since GX! I'd be damned if anyone I know even enjoys 5D!

interesting kinda quirky but ill buy it if they give you an option to play with the gamecube controller because i hate the nunchuk

What a strange kind of game. Intriguing though. I have to wonder whether it will actually get a western release though. It sounds a bit TOO quirky to really take off in the west.

elbert_b_23

i like the graphics it looks like the cartoon more, as for the game its self i am not sure how to feel about it the speed duels are the most confusing about the new anime

Viper_1989
Viper_1989

If you don't understand Yu-Gi-Oh! this game will have no appeal to you whatsoever. The actual gameplay sounds very much like the anime's "Turbo Duel's", you're not really racing, its the cards you need to be thinking about. And what was wrong with the Power of Chaos trilogy. Perfect games, simple yet effective.

Yu-Gi-Oh games are like the Army Men games. There were never good and they never will be good. All Yu-Gi-Oh games are are card games that no one will like unless you are a fan of the series

I am going to pass on this game.

I just checked. Apparently Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's is about dueling on motorcycles. Seriously. So this game isn't quite as ****ed up as it sounds.
