Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels First Look

Yu-Gi-Oh makes it to the Xbox 360 for the very first time, and we take a look.

by

Yu-Gi-Oh fans can now play their favorite trading card game online in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels. Because of Xbox Live's online capabilities, you can now use voice or text chat and compete with one another via the leaderboards. Konami was showcasing Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels at its press event, and here's what we found out.

Who's Making This Game: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels is being published and developed by Konami.

What The Game Looks Like: Because this is the first time that Yu-Gi-Oh has made it to a next-gen console, it's bigger and it's brighter. The layout is still pretty basic, however. You have your playing space and your cards laid out, but you're no longer managing them on a tiny DS or PSP screen.

What There Is To Do: There are three modes of play: Quick Match, Ranked Match, and Custom Match. Quick Match lets you jump in and compete with anyone online, whereas in Custom Match you can tailor the game to your preferences and change the rules. Ranked Match pits you against other players who have similar abilities, and your progress will be tracked online.

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels lets you play with anyone online, and you can also team up and play with up to four players. As you win tournaments, whether it's against the computer or other players, you'll earn more cards to add to your initial 42-card deck. There will also be the option to purchase more cards through the Xbox Live marketplace. Unlike in the DS games, the cards will be selected the entire series, and the developers are aiming to include at least 1,500 to 2,000 cards.

Being able to interact with your opponents is part of the appeal of these card games, which was what was missing in the DS version. Now that you're playing through Xbox Live, there's the added bonus of being able to chat with the people you play with.

How The Game Is Played: Instead of explaining the rules and strategy of Yu-Gi-Oh, just know that it's basically the card game but in video game form.

What They Say: "The Yu-Gi-Oh community is really growing and it has exploded in the last year and a half thanks to Cartoon Network airing the new series. We've seen a lot of crossovers with kids who play the traditional card game that are now entering the video game space."

What We Say: Although the price hasn't been finalized yet, it is currently aiming for 800 Microsoft points. This is an affordable alternative to this pastime that could easily become quite costly if you were to go out and purchase all of your cards. Konami isn't going to be hosting tournaments for this version of Yu-Gi-Oh yet, but it could be a possibility in the future.

Yu-Gi-Oh fans will want to keep an eye out for this game when it is released this summer.

@ztron370 Dude you are so right. I been saying the same thing every since The Eye Of Judgment came out, they need to make a Yu-Gi-Oh game using The Playstation Eye. Im such a fan of the franchise i just mite buy in XBOX just for this game.

@TheMudora So you can play with your real deck even if you're alone. I love the idea because in other video games I have to make a new Deck until I eventually find all the cards I use in real life. Which can take forever. Yes, there is the code to enter but they make you pay for it with in game points or whatever and some cards are ridiculously expensive. Plus it's another incentive for you to spend more money on their cards.

Why doesn't KONAMI make a full fledged yu-gi-oh game for the pc,360 or PS3 using the eye of judgment.

would be nice to have it as a full game just like on the PSP but for both 360 and PS3 would be real nice :)

I like this a lot, it's a cheaper alternative to the DS and PSP games. With XBLs faster connection and the ability to talk during the match, the online modes should be quite a bit better than games on the portable systems. I just hope that the game will feature DLC support for upcoming sets.

5Ds is stupid, and has ruined YGO completely. I'm glad this isn't coming out on the PS3 - I think I'll stick to the older games.

@Viktormon I think you don't understand me.Atmosphere and story is very different, of course but characters and environment and style in ,not just Naruto or yu-gi-oh, but in general are similar.Let me put it this way: Simpsons and South Park are cartoons, but are very different styles of drawings.Understand? Jesus,I mean no harm.

will this game come out on PC

@TheVGamer Since the difference of styles between YGO and Naruto appears so obvious to me, I find it hard to believe that someone can't see it.

@Viktormon Why do you think I'm not?

Used to like YuGiOh, but after the original storyline ended and all those new games came out and those new card packs appeared it quickly lost its appeal. If you really need a TCG go play Magic.

If it is anything like the world championship series on the DS I will be getting it.

Good for the fans, but i doubt it will sell well anywhere outside of Japan. The Yugi-oh! fad died out years ago.

Cmon man, it should at least be multi platform.

Yu-Gi-Oh died once 5D's first started. I gave it up during the GX days. Will I get this? No. The best anime games are the Dragonball Z and Naruto (Rise of a Ninja, Clash of Ninja games) ones.

@ otaviogalileu: This isn't the first console game this generation either. YGO 5Ds Wheelie Breakers came out on Wii last year.

@kikitube All we know is its an online yu-gi-oh game where you can buy cards with real money. Thats basically it. Some Yu-Gi-Oh video games are really good, some are just garbage. It can't possibly sound great until there are more details.

fend_oblivion

Barely any details...I hope this game doesn't turn out to be a recipe for disaster.

Yu-Gi-Oh was the bomb when it came out and a few season after but after Yugi left it went down the tubes.Yu-Gi-Oh video games are all the same,They are either just quick duels or lame storys or both. Its annoying and I honestly dont see how people buy new games.

Raxyman

otaviogalileu you're right, one for ps1 "Forgotten Memories" which was fair, and for the ps2 "Duelist of Roses" most people didn't liked, but i did, it was an cross-over with yu-gi-oh and chess

Its not the first time that a Yu-Gi-Oh game is made for a console and it states on this article... There have been two ps2 games I think (not that they're very good, but still...) Its the first time that they make a 7th gen console Yu-Gi-Oh game though.
