Your Shape Ubisoft Press Conference Impressions

Ubisoft's latest fitness title is a new camera-based game for the Wii.

At this year's E3, Ubisoft touted its casual games as the reason for much of its success during the past year. Although Your Shape isn't the publisher's first fitness game, it is the first to use camera technology. Specifically, it uses an optical sensor to track your body shape and movement. It was demoed for the first time at Ubisoft's E3 2009 press conference today, and we were on-hand to offer our impressions.

Ubisoft's Felicia Williams came onstage to explain about how Your Shape will work. The bundled camera will scan your body, assess your shape, and then give you a preliminary fitness test. From there, you can choose which areas of your body you want to focus on, such as your legs, and you can then choose to slim, strengthen, or tone these chosen areas. After telling the game how much time you have available, it will automatically create a programme that you customise as you like.

The video demonstration showed how the camera technology will be used in the game. Your body is shown onscreen, and the software can judge the angle of your movements to offer feedback on their efficiency and safety. You will also have a coach who will be on-hand to show you just how to do each move and give you real-time feedback on how you're performing.

Ubisoft is touting Your Shape as the first camera-enabled fitness game for the Wii, and though similar products were released on the PlayStation 2, this does look a lot more advanced. The game wasn't physically demonstrated during Ubisoft's press conference, so we'll have to drop by the company's booth to find out more tomorrow. In the meantime, you can look forward to seeing Your Shape "this holiday season," which equates to Q4 2009 for all you non-Americans.
