Your Madden 15 Cover Star Is Controversial Seahawk Richard Sherman

The Super Bowl-winning cornerback will be on the cover of this year's defensive-oriented Madden game.

The public has spoken, and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman will be on the cover of Madden NFL 15 when it's released this August.

When the game was announced in late April, Electronic Arts said it would once again turn to fans to decide who would be the game's cover star. A March Madness-style bracket was created, and 16 players in all were in contention--if you'd actually consider it to be 'in contention' in a popularity contest between Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery versus Sherman, or Redskins (yes, they're still called that) running back Alfred Morris versus Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

Roughly 10 million votes in total were cast during the tournament, which allowed fans to vote online once per day. Sherman did face some difficult competition after getting past Jeffery, including Saints tight end (read: wide receiver) Jimmy Graham, 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, and, in the finals, Panthers QB Cam Newton.

Richard Sherman knows exactly where you're ticklish.

By winning, Sherman becomes the first cornerback to ever get the cover star treatment, which--since John Madden himself stopped appearing on the cover after Madden 2000--has typically been dominated by quarterbacks and running backs.

Even if you don't follow the NFL closely, it's possible you've heard of Sherman, either because he played on this year's Super Bowl-winning Seahawks team or because he has a propensity for trash talk. The latter has earned him scorn; despite arguably being the best cornerback in the league, he's done and said things that have caused him to be viewed as a poor sport (or worse). As demonstrated in the essays he's written, though, he's actually a very thoughtful individual.

Having a defensive player on the cover of Madden 15 is fitting, given EA's focus on defense for this year's game. Along with prettier graphics (including authentic tattoos) and an improved presentation, the defensive side of the game has been overhauled. New pass-rushing moves, an "intuitive" tackling system, and upgraded coverage logic are among the changes which promise to give players a better chance at shutting down the opposing offense. There's also a new "crowd-sourced recommendation engine" for suggesting plays to select based on games played online, which sound questionable in theory to me given the bad play-calling I've seen online in my time. (Fourth down typically means you punt!)

Madden 15 will be available on August 26 in North America and August 29 in Europe on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Expect to hear much more about the game next week during E3.

could get hurt or die, sure, but you can say that about any athlete.  He's probably the most driven athlete in the NFL; look at his background.  A guy with a chip that big on his shoulder, he will never live it down.  He's in the same class as Ty Law, Darelle Revis.  He cuts the field in half.  He's not Antonio Cromartie who got tons of picks because he played opposite of Quentin Jammer.

Richard Sherman a good fit. to add to the controversy..

Let's see if Madden can deliver a game that gives off a 9.0 + rating and puts an end to countless edition's of "same old same old".or, will Richard Sherman be the latest to be added to the "controversial" pile of "been there done that"..

I hate this piece of sh!t and we all know what he really is. He's a stereotypical thug. He may of went to Stanford, but he's still a childish and immature. I wonder if "the best corner in the game" would be any good on a team that didn't have a completely stacked front 7 and great assistance in the secondary as well. He's slow, put him on a crappy team that can't rush the QB and he gets smoked deep all day. Screw this guy, hope he has to eat his words one day. HUMILITY, is a virtue you know!

By "intuitive tackling system" do they mean that the game will detect when your controller suddenly flies through the air and your friend's controller crashes to the ground?

The man deserves it - don't come at him with no garbage.  LOL

Sherman is such a bad ass.  Dude started in Compton, dirt poor.  Graduated high school with a 4.2 GPA.  Went to Stanford and graduated with a communications degree.  Then went from an extremely low draft position (almost as a backup) to being the best cornerback in the NFL.  Look up the stats (he is now the highest paid as well).  He has met the POTUS, raised tons of money for charity, helped the talking heads in the media to stop using the word "thug" when they actually mean the n-word, taken care of his family, and remained loyal to his drafting team.  I love this guy.  Defense is the best part of football and the Legion of Boom is the best in the biz.

I wonder how many people voted for Sherman purely in hopes of him getting hit with the Madden Cover Curse.

Man, this comments section is, really, really terrible with its pending crap. I couldn't even say beat, with an 'ing' at the end.

I'm a Seahawks fan (merely due to the fact that I live in WA), but I'm not huge on it, so I was pretty much with others that got bored of the Super Bowl game when they beat the Broncos. I kind of feel like it doesn't really matter if they go to the Super Bowl again, and I kind of doubt they will.

I see a lot of upset wimps posting on here. The man plays football. In football you need to be a badass, and you need to be the biggest badass to play corner back. You are 1v1 most of the game. Sherman takes away the best weapon most teams have EVERY game. It really stinks that most of you on here can't/won't ever be as proud of yourself as that man is.

Not a big fan but he's a good player, won the super bowl, so well deserved. I just hope Madden is improved this year.

This is a mans life you guys are talking about, he is a human being who made a mistake and you are all wishing a life ending injury on him, how would you feel if someone wished harm on you for every bad thing or mistake you have made, if that was the case most of you would be condemned for your comments on here alone not to mention if you added in things you do/say on a daily basis. It's easy to single someone out and judge them when they are in the spotlight, but turn that judgmental light on yourself and I bet you would have a totally different standpoint on what the punishment should be. Karma isn't a b****, she is exactly what people deserve

Great.  More fuel for this guy's enormous ego.  Here's to hoping the Madden curse is real.

Why do you console lemmings even care who's on the cover, you're going to buy the same re-released games every year anyway, and they know it. Here's to 10 more years of the exact same thing every year, courtesy of the console crowd!....

Controversial? Sherman's a badass. Speaks his mind, doesn't censor himself for anyone or anything, and dominates the field. Not like all these politically correct sissies these days.

I feel the same way about the Seahwaks as I do about EA, so it is only fitting that Sherman gets the cover photo.

These are the "heroes" America is supposed to look up to no wonder we raised a whole generation of retarded thugs and drug addicts.

Decided the last super bowl would be the last I would watch when they had a halfdressed jailbait Mily Cyrus performing with a bunch of 40-50 year old men ogling a half naked teen no caring about the crap lip-synced music half time and all the players are criminals and thugs, its become a vulgar display of unhinged-capitalism and American cultural degeneration gone wild.

If anybody deserves to get his knee shredded or suffer an Achilles' tendon tear from the Madden Curse, it's this trash-talking son of a garbageman. Surprised the guy is happy to play in a minor-league city like Seattle when he could make bigger waves in Dallas, New York or elsewhere. I guess Mr. Sherman loves hanging out in the Capitol Hill district.

john_matrix_007

Well, I’m the best cover athlete in the game. When you try me with a sorry quarterback like Newton, that’s the result you’re going to get. Don’t you ever talk about me.

That's reason enough for me to not buy the game.. Wilson wouldve been the better choice..

As happy as I am for Richard Sherman, I can't help but feel ambivalent because of the infamous "Madden Curse" (Google it if you don't know what it is). However, I hope he does well this coming season and makes Kaepernick eat another interception.

@IvanKavinski This was so well written.  As an Ex Thug I appreciate it.  Sherman is the man - from nothing to something and he is smarter and most of the haters.  Bunch of wimps and skirts.  Football is about aggression, I think this dude is a beast and i'm not a Seahawk fan, I just respect his game.

notorious98

@IvanKavinski "Highest paid" and "loyal" may not be mutually exclusive, but they may as well be in this case.  His loyalty certainly would have been tested if the Seahawks weren't going to offer him a competitive contract.  Let's not act like he took less money to play for the Seahawks.

@BadMrSnake Eddie George? Daunte Culpepper? Micheal Vick? Stephen Alexander? Vince Young? Peyton Hillis?  Should I go on?  Probably the only deserving HoF player of the bunch...

@BrunoBRS  Only 4 positions end with "back". Quarterback, Half/Running Back, Fullback, and Cornerback. These are the other positions: Offense: Wide Receiver, Tight End,  Offensive Tackle(Left and Right),  Offensive Guard(L&R), Center. On defense: Defensive end, Defensive tackle, Nose Tackle, Linebackers, and Safety's.

@NightlyOne Madden "Curse" has been proven wrong 2 years in a row now. Johnson ('13 Cover) had a record breaking season in reception yards and of course Sanders didn't get hurt last season either... but then again, he didn't play. But at least he didn't die

Bryjoered07
Bryjoered07

@noserag  Not slow, but compared to many other top tier corners he is. He ran a 4.54 40 time, that is pretty slow, there are some Defensive Ends that run faster than that for god sakes

Bryjoered07
Bryjoered07

@3rd_dimension @Bryjoered07  Yeah, and you're clearly a black guy that is on his nuts because "he's from the streets and he made it out" My friend did meet the guy in person actually, it's all an act. He is not thuggish at all actually is a nice guy he just puts on that act so ignorant people like yourself will think he's real and "from the streets". Think about it for a second, and you'll realize the truth. The dude went to Stanford, he's no dummy.

Bryjoered07
Bryjoered07

@Ensabuhnur @IvanKavinski  Put him on a team with a weaker front seven that didn't constantly get the qb to rush his throws. He'll get smoked, he's slow as dirt for an NFL corner.

Bryjoered07
Bryjoered07

@yankblan @BadMrSnake  Who says he's going to be a hall of famer. He's had TWO world class seasons, TWOOOOO. He could get hurt, could die could get fat, do drugs, all of the ABOVE.

@Bazongaman502 Yes, Calvin Johnson had a tremendous season but his team certainly did not and missed the playoffs.
