Yakuza 1 & 2 HD bundle hitting Wii U in Japan

Upcoming action game collection coming to Nintendo's latest console in Japan this summer; no word on Western release.

Today during a Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo announced (via Polygon) that the Yakuza 1 & 2 HD bundle is coming to Wii U in Japan on August 8. As its name suggests, the collection packs in the first two installments in the PlayStation 2-era action-crime series.

No mention was made of a release for the Yakuza 1 & 2 HD bundle in North America or Europe.

Polygon reports that a trailer for the bundle was shown, displaying upscaled graphics and Wii U-exclusive features. Players can use the GamePad to navigate the game's streets and monitor their characters.

For more on the games within the bundle, check out GameSpot's reviews of the original Yakuza and Yakuza 2.

the only way to bring third party games to the WiiU: turn it into a PS2 HD emulator!

Yakuza and Shenmue could turn the tide for Nintendo, even if they were bought only by the OG fans.

Great news! Now for Yakuza 5 and then Western releases for both. And how about Shenmue III? Hmmm....

Put Shenmue on WiiU and I bet it would sell.

They're probably testing the waters to see if they should release Yakuza 5 on the Wii-U, at least in Japan. I highly doubt this will come over to the US. It's too niche. I have all the games so this doesn't affect me, but it would be cool for more people in the States to take a look at these games.

I already have the PS3 copy. I'd prefer they port this to 3DS, if anything.

These games are so much fun, I only played the first 2 games and remember sitting and playing it on my PS2 for nights. But i'm sorry if you expect me to buy a WiiU cuz they have 2 old HD remakes with a few gimmicks added.

"Players can use the GamePad to navigate the game's streets and monitor their characters."

Fancy talk for they couldn't do anything more creative than put the map and health/weapons HUD on it.

Aging PS2 games propping up the Wii U's lacking third party library.

Sad sad times.

I've been waiting for the PS3 version, but I guess if it doesn't come out, I could just get it for the Wii U. Still, I wanted trophies! lol

So is this the same gameplay style as Sleeping Dogs? (And before someone comments "this came first you idiot", I'm not asking if this is based on Sleeping Dogs, I just never heard of these series)

I want this to hit PSN.  I would totally play both again.  Yakuza remains one of the most engaging series I've ever played and 2 was my outstanding favorite.

Excellent news. Nintendo's push to localise more titles means this actually has a chance of being released in English.

They may be old PS2 games, but having two games in one is a heck of a nice deal, don't you think?

SuplexKirby

Didn't the creator said he wanted to keep the yakuza games exclusive to playstation only? I could of sworn there was an article about that. Well I guess this is good news to Wii U only owners that hasn't play the series.

@DarkSaber2k I guess it's kinda like how it was with the NDS and the 3DS. Many games didn't use the touch-screen features that well, and many games didn't need to either.

racerxgundam

@DarkSaber2k Nintendo is trying to justify you paying for two old games. apparently that's their US business model.

@zzamaro I have read some comments of nintendo fans but bashing hd collections on other consoles is new to me

UncleAnesthesia

@Korvus85 Not really. I would describe it as a brawler with RPG elements. You do missions, get xp and what not. There are random encounters, too. Sleeping dogs was more of a straight up open world game.

thekingofirony
thekingofirony

@Huskypaw probably won't happen. No word on Yakuza 5 being localized(that was released 6 mon. ago).Yakuza 3 was the reason i bought a PS3.I heard about stuff being cut,but to be honest it didn't matter. The game was still good.So was yakuza 4 and DS.

TohouAsura

@enoslives7 YOu obviously know notihng about this game if you think it's a GTA clone.

It's much better than that. It's the spiritual successor of Shenmue, though judging by your comment, you probably don't even know what that game is.

chuckles471
chuckles471

@enoslives7 There is no auto in the game.  It's the spiritual successor to shenmue, idiot. A 3d open world game before GTA.

Not Dissing GTA, just schooling a fool.

korvus

@UncleAnesthesia @Korvus85 That's funny "Brawler with RPG elements" is what I consider Sleeping Dogs to be., Open world or not the only thing you could do was missions...the rest was driving. :) Thanks for the info.

Threesixtyci

@thekingofirony @Huskypaw  I'm pretty sure it took 2 years to localize 2. 3 took a year, with cut content. And 4  took a year. And all besides the first one was without any English dubbing, so they didn't even have VA to contend with.

Misfitgraves18
Misfitgraves18

@Korvus85 I loved Sleeping Dogs, but Yakuza (3 and 4 are only ones I've played) has 5 times more content in terms of random side missions and making you feel like you're actually in Tokyo (Japan simulator) It's more comparable to Shenmue than Sleeping Dogs. You should def. give it a shot.
