Xi3's modular Piston console out Nov. 29

$1000 grapefruit-sized portable console launching on Black Friday in the United States.

by

Xi3's $1000 modular Piston console will be available for purchase beginning on November 29, 2013. That date lines up with the Black Friday holiday shopping event in the United States.

Those who preordered a Piston console during or before the SXSW 2013 Gaming Expo will receive their system on or before November 15, the company said.

"The Piston console is just Xi3's first step in what we believe will be a transformative technology revolution for the living room," Xi3 founder, president, and CEO Jason A. Sullivan said in a statement.

The Piston console is loaded with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD storage, though it can be modified to hold up to two 512GB mSATA SSDs. It features a 3.2 GHz AMD Trinity processor, and a Radeon 7000-Series GPU.

The system will come pre-loaded with a number of games, though Xi3 did not name any of these.

The Piston console was first revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, with some reports pegging the device as a "Steam Box" after the company disclosed an unspecified investment from Valve for the project.

Valve's Doug Lombardi said the company began "exploratory" work with Xi3 in 2012, but no longer has any involvement with the Piston console or any device from Xi3.

Last week, Valve announced Steam Machines, described as a "powerful new category of living room hardware." Several boxes from multiple manufacturers will be available to the public in 2014. A hardware beta will begin later this year.

$1000... Is this a PC with a truncated OS?

I think the main difference between this and a regular Xi3 is that this comes with a graphics card; hopefully it's interchangeable.

truely if the piston boasted better powerful hardware then the ps4 and Xone also was going to enter into the console wars I would seriously consider getting one but from the rumors I've heard about the thing its truely just a one trick pony thats going to be dead at launch and over priced just like the nivida shield in my opinion I'll pass.

1000$ dollar is not expensive, 100000000$ is expensive

I feel sorry for the morons who invested money into this FAIL product.

This is supposed to compete with new console, steam boxes, laptops? LoL

Have to say though is that really the controller! its an exact same replica as the xbox 360 in every way.

I think they want to be like Apple lol and charge through the nose to make them look appealing. I used to be an Apple mac fan but lack of money took me over to pc and I love it.

I will be surpirsed if it sell more than 3000 units, those who can pay 1000$ can pay 2000$ for an amazing rig

that controller looks good. I wonder how much that controller costs?

With one grand anyone can make an awesome rig. It won't be as small as a piston or as portable, but seriously, there are handheld devices for that sort of stuff. Plus, no one even knows what games really run on that thing or what OS they include.

Beware of that company, they're basically a one man show, riding along on a hype train, it's not the SteamBox you're waiting for and for 1000 USD is way overpriced for what is basically a notebook CPU with integrated graphics.

On their buy page (http://xi3.org/buy_now-piston.php) they mention the AMD R464 chip, which if you do some searching and check out benchmarks doesn't even cut butter, so don't expect to be able to run anything on it besides some very casual games that don't require much processing or graphics power.

Back at the CES Valve invited multiple hardware vendors to show off their ideas, it's just that this Xi3 guy went way over himself by boasting that he's working "closely with Valve" even though that was absolutely not the case.

Only positive thing is its size, but you can build a small formfactor PC yourself for about 700 EUR that can run anything currently out there smoothly. (or wait for the real SteamMachine hardware announcements)

I'd like to know where they made this for that price

Obviously not from a factory in China

As a console collector, I have to say this is where I'm drawing the line. There are so many small minor consoles coming out lately that it's impossible to keep track of them all and that $1000 price tag screams ripoff. I just got my Ouya, intend on having the nVidia shield here shortly, and looking forward to getting XB1 and PS4 in November, so I don't think I need anything else right now.

I think it great for the gaming industry and brings something new and fresh and may appeal to people new to pc gaming. The price is high now but if a success will drastically drop in time. So we will have to wait and see.

i swear some companies are so stupid.

Buy a PC, this thing is woefully underpowered for a $1000 PC-based gaming device.

Neo Geo, your record has been broken for the most expensive console price tag

OK, news about this thing never reached to the rock I'm living under... I have no idea what is this... and frankly 1000$$ for that money I could buy both x1 and ps4 at release date! (which I won't)...

AyatollaofRnR

How do they justify the price point?

At that price its D.O.A

Wow the controller is a complete copy of the Xbox 360 controller

Bawhahahaha $1000 dollar for cheap as shit. My Pc is hitting 4.1Ghz and water cooled and still not as expensive as this machine.

Daian

A 7000 series AMD? Well that isn't vague at all, it's not like these have have models that go from 100$ to 800$. It probably has a crappy one.

Nobody will buy this overpriced thing, might as well just build a small form PC with that money and get something much better.

Latiran

$1000 for ANOTHER console? nah i'll pass i think. Besides i'm buying the Steam Box next year instead of the Xbox One.

rarson

Sounds like an Ouya that doesn't suck. I'm sure the price is higher, though.

Why is the controller such a blatant Xbox 360 controller clone?

Altazen
Altazen

"Valve's Doug Lombardi said in March that the company began "exploratory" work with Xi3 in 2012, but no longer has any involvement with the Piston device."

because Valve knew the console is going to Fail.

also.... ps4 - Nov. 15th = $400

XB1 - Nov. 22nd = $500

Piston - Nov. 29th = $1000.

Hard choice, lol.

Another console? This has to be the 10th system announced this year...

YukoAsho

@SurfaceNerd No, a grand is indeed expensive, at least for most normal human beings.

Zerabp
Zerabp

@Dazler1 You could build a MUCH more powerful pc for a $1000

xsonicchaos
xsonicchaos

@Dazler1 It will obviously be a huge success. I mean, why buy a PS4 or a Xbox One for half the price, when you can buy this... thing?

rarson
rarson

@ZeroFallout1

Your PC is about 15 times the size of this "console." I'm not trying to defend it, but obviously the price is so high because the form factor is so small (which is an incredibly stupid tradeoff, if you ask me).

Razer361
Razer361

@rarson Because it's a very well designed controller, and they didn't want to put any work into making a new one

xsonicchaos
xsonicchaos

@Altazen For the price of a piston you get to buy two next-gen consoles, any of them twice as powerfull and with a great line-up of games, which you can buy with the hundred bucks short.

Dazler1
Dazler1

@Zerabp @Dazler1 I realise this but this is an interesting product they have produced and hopefully price will come drastically down and not be an issue.

Dazler1
Dazler1

@xsonicchaos @Dazler1 I wouldn't and lots wont im not even going to by a ps4 or xbox one on launch because by the time I have bought the console and lets say 3 - 4 games im looking at paying out £500 - £600. Not too mention xbox live gold subscription or psn costs. And then theres the add on packs to the games. I realise its too expensive but I love the idea and for me being a console gamer this appeals to me rather than building a massive pc rig. This thing looks really easy to upgrade. Either way im waiting a few months to see how things pan out after all platforms have released.
