Xevious, Rush 'n Attack storm XBLA

Arcade action games set to arrive on Xbox 360 downloadable game service this Wednesday.

by

Last Wednesday was a pretty big day for Xbox Live. Microsoft released a pair of downloadable games in the free side-scrolling shooter Aegis Wing as well as Soltrio Solitaire, and then there was the somewhat troubled launch of the Halo 3 beta. Today Microsoft announced the games given the unenviable task of following that up, as this week's Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday releases have been revealed as Rush 'n Attack and Xevious.

Developed by Namco and released in US arcades by Atari, the 1982 shooter Xevious puts players in the cockpit of a lone starfighter and Earth's last hope against an evil supercomputer. One of the first vertically scrolling shooters, Xevious gave players a pair of offensive options: standard gunfire to take out other flying targets and bombs to drop with precision on ground installations. Microsoft boasts that this Xevious is the first "100 percent arcade-accurate reproduction" of the game, complete with hidden towers, bosses, and 1-ups.

While Microsoft touts Xevious' similarity to the arcade edition as a selling point, the publisher is instead promoting the differences in the Xbox Live Arcade version of Rush 'n Attack. The Konami action game will arrive on Microsoft's downloadable game service with revamped graphics, music, and sound, as well as online play in both cooperative and competitive flavors. Gamers with a nostalgic bent for the arcade version of the game will also have the option of playing with the original graphics.

Both games will be available on Wednesday at 2 a.m. Pacific time, and each will sell for 400 Microsoft points ($5). Xevious is rated E for Everyone, while Rush 'n Attack is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and older.

One thing Microsoft deserves credit for is the accuracy of their XBOX Live! Arcade releases. They're true reproductions of the stand-up arcade boxes. Xevious was one of my favorite games when it was out, and I've played a number of re-creations of it that were pretty accurate, so I don't know what "100 percent arcade-accurate reproduction" means. Then again, I didn't know the game ever had hidden items either, so I'm not the expert on the matter. Rush 'n Attack is an oldie but a goodie. Xevious can also been found in the Namco Museum or on GameTap.

Where the hell is Crimefighters? Or The Simpsons beat-um up that came out in the late 80's early 90's?

As a PS3 owner, I haven't been jealous of any 360 releases until today ... Rush N' Attack is great classic! Who wouldn't want it on their console for $5?

I would really like to see Twin Cobra on XBL Arcade playable coop on line.

Rush N' Attack is not really like Contra too much. You have to keep in mind that it came out at least a year or 2 before Contra and probably helped lay the ground work. Great game

Both games are awesome. I remember playing Xevious at a 7-11 until 3 AM trying to flip it. Rush n' Attack is a great game and brinks back the whole "fear the Russkies" vibe of the early 80's.

BurgerTime FTW - when is that going to show up?

I never played Rush 'n Attack. Wasn't the game just a lot like Contra? It's one of those games I've heard good things about so I might get it. Can anyone tell me if it is better than Contra, though?

OMG! Rush n' Attack! That game rocked so hard! I gotta get this one.

The Halo 3 beta having a "...somewhat troubled launch..." sounds just like calling NFL2K1 "late". Brilliant.

I don't mind the old school games, however, if they are going to be bringing old school games they should at least add some Japan only releases from way back in the day.

I was an Apple2 fanatic but finally got a C64 for Rush 'n Attack. Then a Famicom disk drive for that and Castlevania. A couple months ago I gave my 360 to my bro but I may get the Elite for this game. ;)

MS should release more newly create games with better graphics (like Aegis Wing).

Sounds like a good offering - though I'd rather some better shmups than the originals.

I'm definitely getting Rush 'N Attack. Yes, the NES version might be a little longer with 6 levels but $5 for the arcade version is still a decent price. Won't be getting Xevious, though. It's a pretty blah shooter. Maybe I might get it if offers an easy 200. I've got 2850 MP points. What's with the Double Dragon hate? I really liked it. Of course, I'm biased.

I'd sure be happy if some games that weren't from the 80s came out instead.

Almost every XBLA game is a side-scrolling shooter lately...

Come out with Halo 3 and I'll buy the 360! I'm playing my roommate's account and the beta is sweet. These downloads aren't bad as well. Does anyone know if Catan can be played on-line with random people?

I have the original on NES (did it ever come out on SNES?), Amstrad tape and on a GBA compilation, but it's Green Beret (rush n attack)! 400 is a small price to pay for the frustration i had on that game back in the days of the Amstrad 464.

Man, the games just keep coming out. I'm in love with suprise Wednesdays! I loved Xevious' back in the day, but like the Dukes of hazard, it's probably better left to memory lol. Oh well, free trial here I come:D

Rush 'n Attack was a good game. I will not be getting it however as I have the original copy for the SNES already, then there is the fact that I do not even own a 360..

Sure, it's nice to have two XBLA releases every week, but when both generally suck, it makes one envy the days when we occasionally got an arcade, but it was usually a good one.

A lot of props needs to go out to Microsoft's XBLA managment. We have not only had non stop XBLA Wednesdays for a few months, but for the last few weeks we have gotten not one but 2 games each week. Cheers to MS for fixing XBLA Wednesdays.

I think I'll pass and spend the 5 bucks on some fine beverages to sip while I play more worthwhile games.

"Both games are kind of weak, should be the two together for that price." 5 bucks for an arcade perfect version of Rush'n Attack is weak?!? Did you born the in 90s or something?

We need Street Fighter II: The World Warrior! Not of this "super" or "remix" stuff. Just a MAME-like pixel perfect recreation for the game which brought one-on-one fighting to the masses.

I'm definitely picking up Rush 'n Attack... the only thing better than killin' Commies is killin' Commie ninjas!

Always good to have more games-but the prices on some are still too high. Microsoft should consider having a sale on downloadable games and content-I think it'd be a big hit.
