XCOM: Enemy Within launching in November

Expansion for Enemy Unknown will feature new maps, enemies, and soldier class; $30 on PC and $40 on consoles.

Today at Gamescom, 2K Games announced XCOM: Enemy Within, an all-new major expansion for Firaxis Games' well-received PC strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

"This is not a prequel and this is not a follow-on chapter that extends the story," designer Ananda Gupta told GameSpot. "Instead, [it's] the same alien invasion that you confronted in XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but with a lot of new stuff added."

Included with Enemy Within are new soldier abilities like gene mods, which allow players to construct a genetics lab to enhance their abilities, including augmentations to their characters' chests, brains, eyes, skin, and legs.

Enemy Within also introduces a new trooper class called MEC, short for mechanized exoskeletal cybersuit. This class has specialized abilities, and every suit can be upgraded with new weapons like the flamethrower and grenade launcher.

The expansion also brings eight new maps to Enemy Unknown--bringing the game's total to 13-- as well as new weapons, equipment, and "lots" of new enemy types like the mechtoid.

A new feature called Offline Squad Editing will also be introduced in XCOM: Enemy Within. This much requested feature, according to Gupta, will allow players to select multiple configurations of squads offline, while they are under no time pressure.

On top of that, Enemy Within packs in a new strategic resource called meld, which works differently than other resources in the game.

"The way meld works is it shows up in these canisters that are on the battlefield," Gupta said. "And the meld canisters all have self-destruct timers. So players who have become accustomed to a very conservative play style, where they only use the best cover and they…take their time, they're very meticulous about their soldier moves…you can still do that, but you won't get as much meld."

These meld canisters will also be added to Enemy Unknown's original five maps to bolster replayability, Gupta said.

Lastly, Enemy Within will add all localized languages to the game's character customization options. Players will be able to assign a different language to every character, in any combination they want, choosing from English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, or Polish.

"We really wanted to improve the international feel of the squad, and we feel like this is the best way to do that."

Enemy Within will launch November 12 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC/Mac. On PC/Mac, the content will cost $30 and will be available as a traditional downloadable expansion to Enemy Within.

On consoles, Enemy Within can be purchased for $40 as a stand-alone download in the form of the Commander Edition. In addition to the new content, this bundle features previously released DLC like the Slingshot expansion and Elite Soldier Pack.

Will XCOM: Enemy Within require XCOM: Enemy Unknown for the PC? I have EU for my 360, but have transitioned over to PC since its release and am curious..

So basically only the european languages matter... Japanese, mandarin and Urdu dont exist.

I love the "localized languages to the game's character customization options" bit. It was big issue for me in Enemy Unknown, all characters speaking in flawless American English / accent.

Does anyone know if this includes Enemy Unknown?, I've been looking to pick that up but might wait for this instead if that's the case.

People as I for example who has original XCOM: Enemy Unknown on a disk for consoles won't be able to download only expansion separately, I understood it. The original weighs 9 Gb if to download through PSN. Why nobody tells how many it will weigh? Especially if it is already known that on consoles it will be available, only the digital version XCOM: Enemy Within.

First x com is 100 times better, i was bored to play this one, almost no researches, almost not customazible characters, onkly few weapons, dissapointed, why cant devs make pure clone of old x com, there is so huge replayability this one is for one time most.I not believe these addons change situation, not waiting.

8 added maps seems to be the big selling point, if they just released the map editor ill bet there would be hundreds of different maps available for download in a week. And for the asking price, sorry far to high, shameless cash grab.

I hope they have an option for English voices with foreign accents. I want to hear "Yes Commander!" in a russian, german, whatever accent. Hell, give me the option to record my own voices without having to hack the game to do it! Be like Worms baby, be like Worms!

*features DLC like Slingshot..

wow what a way to reward those who actually supported them and paid for that extra piece of useless crap.

Sounds good, but it better be a lot more gameplay in here for that high price.

That's the right way to do DLC or an expansion even if it's still the same base game. I have only played through the game once and really want to play again but there's just too much else to play. This is a good reason to play again seeing how there will be so much more to it. It'll almost be like playing again for the first time, almost.

Buying this for certain. I agree with what Scalds said though...."Base Defense Base Defense". Well said Scalds...couldn't agree more.

PS+ users enjoying xcom atm :) 40 dollars is a bit steep but the game is addicting.

Hmm.  At $40 they should do a deal like with Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen..... they've got a bunch of content: too much for a little DLC and too little for a full-fledged game.... it would be the perfect jumping-on point, a-la "Game of the Year" edition (i got excited because initially that's where I thought they were going with this and I've yet to pick up the "modernized" XCOM).  I hope I misread this and that is, in fact, the case..... otherwise $40 is a no-go..... hell, the last FULL GAME I bought that cost me $40+ was probably Fallout: New Vegas.... hopefully there ends up being a "hard-copy" version you can get at stores b/c if it's digital download only, us console owners will probably never get it at a reasonable price.  Hmm, such bittersweet news.

40 fucking dollars? are they for real!

I can't believe you all are excited for this.  This expansion is just more flash and less of what made the original so great - multiple bases, base invasions, non linear progression, random maps, etc. etc. etc.  This adds mechs?  MECHS?  This isn't mechwarrior - this is XCOM.  I am really disappointed by this announcement and further disappointed so many are cheering.  The worst part is the stupid timed canister idea.  Supposedly the lead game designer made his team play the original XCOM.  There was NOTHING timed about a turn based battle.  It was slow ... scary .. and methodical.  Timed canisters is a horrible, horrible idea that further ruins what they've done to my beloved game franchise.  Frankly I'm surprised nobody else is upset by this, unless these comments are moderated or none of you played the original.

Buying it, they had me sold at more maps

Yay for more customization. It's nice to see more options for the voices, although I wouldn't mind having Japanese, Chinese and sexy sexy British English as well just for diversity's sake, but at least it'll be a nice change from every soldier using the Generic American 01–07 ones.

About bloody time, I've been waiting all year for new content.

Pricey but it does include the other DLC in it, the price still hurts my wallet but this was one of my favorite all time games from one of my favorite all time devs... overpriced perhaps but you get to wield avatar mech suits against the alien menace....

Eight maps, bringing the game's total to 13? Uh, XCOM doesn't have a whole lot of maps but there certainly are more than five? I'm running it with the Long War mod now and it's not THAT repetitive..

Very much doubt I'll pay full price for it. I'll wait till I can find a deal somewhere.

Costs too much, so I won't be getting it. Maybe during a steam sale for close to $10

All that and for 30 dollars, sounds good to me.  I'm glad I didn't buy the slingshot expansion because it will be included in this version.  Its a shame for the people who did buy it, because now they are actually paying extra!

@Orontes13 I was thinking it would be better if they spoke in their native accents, but I still prefer them to speak English. so English spoken with the accent of the country that person is from.

@Blue_Tomato They said it would take about 3-4 replays to catch all the new content.

@Scalds We still might get it.  We don't know everything yet (firaxis hasn't said no :) )

@Scalds I read somewhere else that it's highly probable. They were asked about it and didn't deny it meaning it's highly likely. If you want it that bad, then I want you to have it!

@executorbalin The original bomb defusal missions are timed, and all I feel about these missions is they must be designed to be more emergent.

Zevvion
Zevvion

@dauw I heard good things about that mod, but it seems so easy to me because you can basically stack perks that weren't meant to be used in synergy. Squad Sight and Snap Shot on snipers is... that's just the playable version of an end boss.

@Zevvion It's an enjoyable mod and they did nerf the snipers somewhat, along with a host of other changes to balance everything. I think they've done a nice job and the difficulty is definitely above that of the original (running into pods of six aliens with hp boosts and additional perks can hurt). I haven't gotten that far yet though, so I haven't had a chance to play around with the endgame perks and synergy. My best troops are Lieutenants at the moment.

Oh, I guess the maps they're talking about must be multiplayer maps. I haven't touched mp so it didn't cross my mind at all, heh.

Zevvion
Zevvion

@dauw @Zevvion Yeah, I heard good things about it, so I'll definitely check that mod out sometime in the future. Currently I'm still trying to beat vanilla on Impossible though.

I love the game, over 200 hours in it, but I just can't seem to crack impossible. Guess I'm just not good enough with these types of games.
