Xbox One's EA Access Adding Need for Speed Rivals to Library of Free Games

Racing game will be added to The Vault this month; six-hour trials for NHL 15 and FIFA 15 confirmed.

Electronic Arts announced today that it is expanding its Xbox One subscription program, EA Access, both in terms of content and reach. First off, the company announced that racing game Need for Speed Rivals will be added to The Vault, a collection of games you can play for free with a subscription, in the coming weeks.

When it arrives, Need for Speed Rivals will join existing titles Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, Peggle 2, and Madden NFL 25. As previously announced, you can play these games for as long as you want, provided your subscription ($5/month or $30/year) remains active.

The arrival of Need for Speed Rivals is not much of a surprise. After all, the game's box art has been featured in the actual EA Access logo since the program's announcement back in July. Others shown in the logo but not yet released into The Vault include EA Sports UFC and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare.

EA also has announced that EA Access will soon expand to 19 new markets, including Brazil, Sweden, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, and Nordic countries. The full list of countries where EA Access is launching in September is available on the program's website.

Finally, EA released some data that speaks to just how popular EA Access has been since its public arrival in August. The company says EA Access members spent a total of 245,000 total hours playing Madden NFL 15 ahead of its release through the game's six-hour trial. Madden NFL 15 is the first EA Access title to offer a pre-release trial, but others are coming in the future for games like NHL 15 and FIFA 15.

As with Madden NFL 15, the trials for NHL 15 and FIFA 15 will let you play for six hours. And, as is the case for all EA Access trials, you'll get to play the games five days ahead of their scheduled release dates. For NHL 15, that means you'll get to lace up your skates and hit the virtual ice this Thursday.

EA Access is available only for Xbox One. For its part, Sony maintains that the service does not offer the kind of value PlayStation gamers have come to expect. That being said, the company has no ill will towards EA and has not ruled out EA Access for the PlayStation 4 some day.

Good to see they are adding more stuff promptly. I hate the idea of games becoming "a service", but... well the service should at least have a lot to offer if that's how things are "going down"

Lol gdamnit gamespot....why you had to be nice? Other gaming sites call this service "exclusive to xbox" and "sony fans have to buy the game" making it sound like WE (SONY) are missing out....I for one still think this service is not valuable, PS PLus is...just today I received 6 "free games"...so I did last month and the month before with more to come until summer next year and all for $40!!!!

Rivals once great fun... once modders fixed it so it could run at 60fps.  Way to release unfinished games, EA.

Misinterpreted this as free on Origin. :( Got me really excited for a second there.

If they added Dragon age to this list I would buy a subscriptions in a heart beat, only reason why I haven't is because it's mostly sports games and I already own BF4. It's really good value for money considering it's EA, very impressed and surprised.

This service is a TERRIBLE idea! (so is PSNow). Don't support this garbage of giving companies control of your games through a subscription service. Seriously this is evil garbage.

It's amazing EA Access is so popular, considering how hard it is to find it in the Xbox One interface.  I just tried today, looked all over the place for it, and had to give up and do a search by "EA Access" to actually find it.

It would probably be a lot more popular if it was actually advertised and put on the front page at some point.

People that just game and don't read gaming news probably don't even realize it exists.

And this is why xbox one is the best place for gaming!!

Will EA keep NOW the server longer online?

Dont like unobtainable online multiplayer achievements.

Well Honestly I did't come here to T.roll the Xbox One but after hearing Pages off damage control about a service for old Games that nobody will be playing in a month or two I have come to the conclusion Xbox One must really be a piece of sh!t if people are this hyped about paying yearly for expired EA Games XD.

@psxp-one You can call PS+ a better deal if you wish...although that's open to debate.

Still, even if you think PS+ is better, that doesn't mean EA Access is valueless.  Including NFS Rivals, to purchase the 5 games in EA's Vault would cost 3-4 times the annual subscription price.

Price is everything in this type of offer and EA really nailed the sweet spot.

This is a Mich better value than PS plus in eryway possible. PS plus is the biggest rip off. The prices for the amount they let you play games is ridiculous. EA access is much more practical and affordable. You are the first an only one to actually believe PS plus is more valuable, @nd that's simply because it isn't. If you don't like EA games don't get the subscription, but for the money it is much more of a value and if you like EA games like half the people who own a console do, then this is a great deal. PlayStation has yet to have any good deals at all, whether it comes to the games, systems, or subscriptions. Microsoft is much better responding to what people want that why the gap between the systems slowly but surely gets smaller. By this time next year Xbox will have double the features ps4 as cause the ps4 was good at launch but has been going downhill since. They only care about selling systems not keeping the system up to date and how the people wan it

@psxp-one If your not interested in any EA games, then sure it has no value. That is the only way I could see it having no Value as you claim.

@psxp-one I, along with anyone I've seen who is a member of EA Access, all agree that it provides incredible value. For £20 ($30 in the US) I've been able to get full access to BF4, Peggle 2 (which is amazing!) and Madden 25, none of which I would have bought, all of which I'm enjoying. On top of that, 6 hour trials, no obligation, for Medden 15, FIFA 15, and NHL 15 five days ahead of launch. I was going to buy FIFA 15 and NHL 15 digitally anyway, so the 10% discount on both of these saves me £10 (half the subscription cost) already, and there'll probably be future games I'll save on as well, which will pretty much pay for the subscription. All this, and still NFS is to be added, and hopefully PvZ and UFC later down the line. I really fail to see how this is anything but an AMAZING deal.

@Martyr77 How is this any different than say, renting from Gamefly or Redbox? evil garbage? are you kidding? what's evil about renting something?

tjkraz
tjkraz

@Martyr77 Not if the price is right!

If they raise rates in future years or reduce the quality...I'll simply walk away.  But based upon what we know so far, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than all of those shiny plastic cases taking up space on a shelf.

@Martyr77 $5 to rent a bunch of games for one month? Oh that is so terrible.

You must be SLOW! You go to the store, click apps and there it is. How hard is that? Ppl are getting dumber by the generation I swear. Smh

@spacecadet25 Good even Microsoft think it only appeals to casuals and fools, Hey here's an easy way to get all the benefits of EA Access without having to give EA a penny....... It is called the Gamestop bargain bin.

@xboxonefanboy I'm not saying you're wrong or right... but you seem a little biased. Only a little. Barely noticeable.

@xboxonefanboy For old games that have an expiry date each year ? That marketing is on par if not worse then Don Mattricks.

sandman338
sandman338

@sonyonly4 I guess that means that you won't be getting Playstation Now when it comes out either since all the games on that are expired PS3 games.

psxp-one

Not really sure what you are talking about but if it comes down to buying games , I already commented that ebay is my best friend at that. The way I see it we are both renting these games only I get much better selection ;-).

lesquirrel

@tjkraz @psxp-one Great point about the price, they really did hit the sweet spot. £20/$30 is really not a lot considering what you get in return.

psxp-one
psxp-one

Lol ok, I don't know what you are on but...ok buddy, The only thing Xbox is good at is at getting media apps and other than that it is nowhere near better than PS4. PS+ gives me an entire library of discounts on all my systems, vita, PS3 and PS4, free games (not just from one publisher) EA suits best for you Xbots because thats all you can get similar to PSPlus....EA just trying to emulate PS+. I don't know where you getting the "downhill" idea from but soon I'll be playing with friends in my virtual couch.

psxp-one
psxp-one

Only thing I like is Rivals and I got that for free but even if I didn't, ebay. Helps me to get what I want cheaper.

Like I told that dude below, EA is the only thing close you can get to PSP Plus.

@customx5 @Martyr77 lets see its different because $30 lets me own madden, fifa, peggle, b4, and now need for speed for a year plsu 10% off future games and dlc plus new games added as time goes on, i got $90 at gamestop for madden fifa and b4 bought a subscription and got madden 5 days early and for only 54 bucks

rasterror

@sonyonly4 @xboxonefanboy For old games you say? Which console is announcing remake after remake and has old Steam games announced as new titles and all at full price?

sonyonly4
sonyonly4

@sandman338 @sonyonly4 (Facepalm) I have said this over and over and over again I couldn't give a rats a** about any game rental service and I have every Playstation Console why would I care about PS Now? and No games like Red Dead redemption, Uncharted 2, Fallout 3 are not out every year you I.diot and actually change with each game unlike Fifa which just gets a little more shiny and updates the team every year do you know anything about Gaming ? Because you must have very low standards if you compare old games to old EA Games which come out every year even though it is the exact same game that all the casuals pay full price for.

tjkraz
tjkraz

@psxp-one I was commenting on your statement that EA Access is "not valuable."  Again...5 current gen AAA games for $30.  And trial access for new games.  And discounts off new game purchases.

You would be lucky to get 2 of those games off eBay for $30.

PS+ and Games With Gold are similar programs, each with their own pros and cons.  There are certainly other methods for buying games.  And I'm sure some gamers aren't fans of many EA titles.

If you want to claim PS+ is better...so be it.  Personally I have little taste for the indie junk they've been mostly peddling the last 6 months.  Resogun is the only title I've spent any amount of time with.

But the value of EA Access isn't even debatable.  Show me an alternative that grants similar access to those titles for anywhere close to $30...

@psxp-one i like xbox way more than ps... only got ps3 for god of war, and maybe ill try the last of us... .. after that i dont see anything ps can offer me that will make me leave my xone
Sounds like you want other people to join your "side" just to feel better about yourself

@rasterror @sonyonly4 @xboxonefanboy You have a point, but truth be told, a title appears on steam, it then a appears on PS+ and then it appears on Live. Microsoft titles are copies of a copy... They are just now getting stuff that was on PS+ earlier in the year.

@xboxonefanboy @sonyonly4 Absolutely EA are a parasite all their games are buggy and Pay to win Microtransaction Garbage with a one year Shelf life why wouldn't I hate?

@sonyonly4 @xboxonefanboy ...and people like you are the reason the gaming community has gone backwards. I dont understand all the "gamers" going out of their way to badmouth a service they will never use and have never tried. Usually their screen names involve PS4 or Sony.... weird!?! I guess they are trying to downplay EA Access because they dont, well.... have access..
