Xbox One won't support Twitch broadcasting until "the first part" of 2014

Twitch application will allow Xbox One owners to view live streams in the meantime.

Live broadcasting to streaming site Twitch from the Xbox One will be arriving in 2014, Microsoft said today, with the company saying it is aiming to add the feature in "the first part" of the year. The PlayStation 4 currently supports broadcasting directly to Twitch.

When the Twitch Xbox One application first launches, Microsoft says, Xbox Live Gold users will be able to watch any broadcast on the live streaming video service. The Twitch application will also integrate into the Xbox OneGuide, and make use of the console's Snap and instant switching features.

Microsoft has also detailed the 10 media achievements that will feature in the Twitch application for Xbox One:

  • Newcomer: watch one hour of live video
  • Competitive: watch 10 hours of live video
  • Best Viewer: watch 100 hours of live video
  • Hipster: watch one hour of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers
  • Talent Scout: watch 10 hours of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers
  • Max Bandwidth: watch a single channel for more than eight hours consecutively
  • Around The Clock: watch at least one minute of live video in each hour of a full day
  • Prime Time: watch 10 hours of live video between 19:30 and 23:30 on weekdays.
  • Night Owl: watch content throughout the nighttime.
  • Standing Room Only: join a broadcast being watched by at least 100,000 viewers.

Earlier today Microsoft detailed the specifics of its Project Upload feature, which will upload gameplay clips to SkyDrive.

Microsoft will launch the Xbox One this Friday, November 22.

My point is, Microsoft will have the same feature in a couple of months. It's not like Sony having the ability to stream for 2-3 months before the Xbox will win them the war. It'll be there on Xbox One first part of 2014. Until that time, you can save clips and upload them to Skydrive and then Facebook/Youtube ect...

Half their features disabled on launch and all titles launching in 720-900p only? This just in, Xbox One won't support next gen gaming until sometime in 2014. Basically Xbox One = $500 Xbox 360.

Is this even a big deal? I doubt there is anyone who was going to get the system who are now second guessing their buy.

I'm sure people have mentioned this already, but wasn't streaming capabilities one of the E3 driving points behind the X1 that the PS4 lacked? Yet now we have a role reversal with PS4s streaming already while X1 has to wait until much later. Must be a timed feature.

I find the "media achievements" system a little silly, also. If I ever had an X1, I'd rather put its energy usage towards gaming than watching a stream. A laptop works perfectly fine for watching streams in the living room or in the bedroom, plus uses less power and is potentially less invasive (X1 is always watching us).

@Suharar MS takes everything that is popular and desired and restricts it to Gold :).  When you consider they are pushing this thing as being amazing for non-gaming and something every household should have, gamers or otherwise, it makes no sense to require Gold for so many basic things.

Imagine some average person who isn't really that interested in games but has money to waste and so thinks hmm, why not make the Xbox One my entertainment hub and maybe occasionally I'll play a game too.  Then tell them that Netflix, which they already pay for, also requires another paid subscription to access on Xbox One.  No matter how many arguments we can make about it, most average people would think it's ridiculous.

Wait, it's not over yet. Next step is Reading Achievements. If you quit gaming altogether and open up a book you receive points.

@hystavito It makes perfect sense from a business standpoint. Sony and Microsoft both sell their consoles at a loss, or close to it. They make most of their money from first party games and online services and 5 bucks a month is cheap enough that most people won't mind that much.
