Xbox One will not require constant Internet connection

Microsoft shoots down rumors of next-gen platform mandating always-on connection; "no, you don't always have to be connected. Gamers can calm down; we've got you covered."

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox--the Xbox One--will not require a constant Internet connection to function, the company confirmed today following its reveal event.

"No, you don't always have to be connected," Xbox boss Don Mattrick said on Spike TV. "Gamers can calm down; we've got you covered."

Prior to today's announcement, numerous reports claimed that Microsoft's next-generation Xbox would work only if users remained connected to the Internet. However, a leaked internal memo that surfaced earlier this month was the first to say this speculation was wrong.

Here they had a chance to give a straight answer what is the requirement. Once a day? Once a week? Why so secretive about a detail like this? Not like this is a sales advantage.

I connect my Xbox through a computer. Won't be booting up my computer and setting the connection and then try to log in 5 times before it works just to play a console game for some hours, every day.

I don't worry for electricity, i don't worry for constant connection

I'm pretty sure "Checking in daily" is still constant in the grand scheme of things.  Way to say it without actually having to say it Microsoft.  I see what you did there.

And how will they be able to do that "cloud computing" magic, without constant (&fast)  internet connection? Or will we have single player games that require constant internet connection in order to run properly on the system? I´m a bit confused on this area.

I'm a PC gamer so I'm neutral in all this, but I think Microsoft is clearly throwing rumors just to test their costumers to see how far they can go DRM wise, and what is the XBOX fans breaking point.

Please stop being lab rats and pupets moved by Microsoft strings. Teach them a lesson and buy a PC or a PS4.

Peace out.

I'm just waiting for that day when hackers f*** this device. sooner or later it will happen. then the faces of microshit staff and the the people who bought this conslol will be really interesting to watch ;)

I worry that people will just decide to accept what Microsoft is trying to force down their throats - and help to make what they announced for Xbox One DRM acceptable.   The worse part is that they can tighten the noose later on with dashboard updates ...

I won't buy a game or console that requires always online, blocks used games or imposes ridiculous resale fees, has limited backwards compatibility with games or accessories, has paid online with ads needlessly, has overpriced accessories and has other annoyances, killing lan only gaming, expensive day-one DLC (wtf indeed)  etc.

I don't understand why there is a need to fundamentally change the gaming model. I'm happy with the offline only model, no blocking used games, some amount of backwards compatibility etc. that exists today.

And gaming consoles that just game are more than enough for me. I don't need a device that does everything. Just play games and stream media which is basic. That works. No need to do it all.

I liked console gaming, but looks like it will be back to PC gaming for me which has its own annoyances.

It's true that this always online crap would pose no technical problem for me at all but this is a matter of principle. I may be paranoid but I've never posted a single piece of personal information on the internet, use Ghostery and such and generally try to remain invisible. Buying this thing and letting microsoft watch me 24/7 so they can show me ads or sell that information would never even cross my mind. Plus I don't watch TV so 9/10 of XBox1 functionality would remain unsed.

It has been confirmed that gamers will not have the entire 500GB storage to use, in fact it is stated that :

"Xbox One system software uses a significant amount of storage; less internal storage will be available to users."

But dont worry about that folks "Gamers can calm down; We've got you covered" Says Microsoft.

Gamer: "How?

Microsoft: "Well we offer unlimited storage on our cloud service!"

Gamer: "Wow! Thats great!.................wait a minute, you have to be online to access the cloud right!?"

Microsoft: (rubs hands together with an evil smile) "Yessss....thats right, you do :D"

HELLO! = Always online!!!

Gamers everywhere buying into Microsoft's PR nonsence, stop it ok? You are doing yourself and other gamers a disservice.

Oh, and i hope everyone now understands why EA tried to pull a fast one last week when they announced that they will be doing away with online passes. It was NOT because they care or listen to gamers, it was because Xbox One IS a much more powerful Online Pass.

PLEASE GAMERS! Think!

Now they are saying that the on line requirement & fee used for second hand gaming is a "potential scenario". Well done MS, conflicting statements and a lot of uncertainties. As stated by Polygon:

"Reports of Xbox One's online requirements and used-game fees are no more than "potential scenarios" and not concrete details, Microsoft told Polygon via email. "

@PrpleTrtleBuBum Same here. I don't think I will be buying the xbox one. This will be the first console I've not purchased since I got my first NES back in the 80's. With the Wii U sucking it up it looks like the PS4 is to be my primary gaming console.

@pcostix

I am doing just that mate.

I wasn't too impressed with Sony's reveal in February. Having watched the live feed yesterday on Microsoft's new Xbox, I am even less impressed with them! I kept making jokes in my comments all through the coverage, while believing that they were saving the best until last?

Oh man, was I wrong!

I suppose I should thank them really? I was wanting to try and get more into PC gaming, maybe at some point later this year. I just wasn't 100% convinced about it.

Now my mind has been made up. I'm done with consoles, precisely because of the things you mentioned, I had been thinking also... They have just pushed us too far!

Now I need to dig out my Windows 95 PC... Ahem... for some proper gaming!

lol

@fanirama Actually not limited backwards compatibility... No backwards compatibility

@theend3r Yea same here I have a PS3 right now and other than netflix when I'm not feeling well I only  play games. I will not get an xboxone for the TV and voice control. If I am gonna get it it better show at E3 more bout their actual games than just COD ghosts and EA sports. It should have focused more on the gaming at the reveal. Also drop all these stupid fee MS.

Blood_Angel
Blood_Angel

@Banefire76 Another thing is the "Fee" for pre-owned games, how is Microsoft going to know if the game is pre-owned if my console isn't on the internet. Hence you can't play games unless they get to do a single online check.

leimonides

The "thinking" isn't going to happen, if not for sheer lazyness, from lack of actually stopping to think about what is being said; thinking critically is a skill not many have, or don't put any attention if effort into doing so (wonder if there are still teachers out there that incorporate this into their teaching.....I know mine did, it was annoying but, better because of it). Anyway, this comment should be copied and pasted everywhere.

@Copianames

But if they get hacked or you lose your internet or they ban you for whatever reason, your console could become a brick.

Also what if they tighten the reins with an update? It's not like you have much of an option, if you need to log in, you can be given the update by force.

@Copianames

yeah because we're commenting from our consoles...

My current console isn't connected to the internet AT ALL because I don't give a shit about multiplayer.

@Copianames Just like going away on holiday and taking your console with you right? In case of rainy days? Or how about maintenance? ISP issues? Node upgrades? Moving house? Then there's military personnel, not allowed to access the internet on tour.

Yeah, definitely compares... Man, I wish you and your fellows would use at least ONE brain cell...

@MatrixGamer78 Well yeah didn't the fact they said "All devices in one system" about three thousand times across the conference, mean anything?

DeeRoyale

@Blood_Angel @Banefire76 My guess is that you can play the game offline but if you ever got the urge to go online even if your not even playing that game it would know by scan of console. Then they would know if its used or not and would prohibit any further play without pay.

stoods

@Blood_Angel @Banefire76 I doubt you will be able to play games at all if your not online, though atleast the xbox wont just shut off anymore like what was previously announced. It can still sit there...

Blood_Angel
Blood_Angel

@stoods @Blood_Angel @Banefire76 That's exactly what I mean, it's like steam, you have to link the game to your xbox account and then you can play it, but to do that you need to be online. Sony said that you can play games even if you never hook your console up to the internet, and that it was up to the developers if they want to have some online check or whatever.
