Xbox One to include time-bound "challenges"

New "challenges" that encourage community collaboration latest new addition to overhauled Xbox Live achievements system.

by

The Xbox One's new achievement system will include in-game "challenges" that encourage the community to work together, Microsoft has announced.

According to an outline of the new achievement system for the Xbox One, achievements and challenges are both considered Xbox Live achievements. This means:

You can unlock them and win their rewards.
Once unlocked, they are saved to your achievement history.
They each have an icon to visualize the cool thing you did.
They often are associated with a Game DVR capture to show your friends that you are better than they are.
Developers can release more of them after the game's initial release.

That's where the similarities between achievements and challenges end, however. Challenges will be time-based, meaning they will be available for only a certain period of time, and they also will not give out any Gamerscore.

In addition, challenges can span multiple titles, while achievements cannot. On top of this, challenges can be unlocked by the community and will typically represent tasks that a single player cannot accomplish alone.

"Imagine, for example, a game releases a headshot weekend challenge that requires players to cumulatively headshot 1 million baddies in a three-day period," said Xbox Live Achievement manager Cierra McDonald. "And every person who participates and meets the challenge's goals gets the unlock on his or her achievement history and reaps its reward."

Lastly, Xbox Live's new achievements system is cloud-powered, which McDonald said will allow developers to add new achievements and challenges on the fly after their game is initially released.

According to McDonald, this will allow developers to learn from and respond to user activity in a way that enhances gameplay.

"For example, let's say a certain game is known on community forums to have a fun little sub-game of kicking chickens," McDonald said. "Wouldn't it be amazing if the game developers noticed the community enjoying an unintended aspect of the game and creating a challenge around it, with a reward to boot?"

McDonald also reiterated that Xbox 360 Gamerscore will carry forward to the Xbox One and that users can unlock digital artwork, new maps, characters, and temporary statistic boots through achievements on the Xbox One.

In addition, achievements will no longer be tied to games, allowing those who use video and music apps to unlock early access, sneak-peek content, or subscriptions. However, only gamers will net players Gamerscore.

The Xbox One launches this November for $500, a full $100 above the PlayStation 4.

Early indications are that PS4 is outselling the One 2.5:1 at Amazon and 2:1 at Gamestop.  I wonder if Sony will give early PS4 buyers a "trophy" for avoiding a bad buying decision?

Just more for me to miss because I don't game all day and all night. More like 'unachievement' - the person with the most of these is the biggest loser.

Sony should put Tekken 7 and it'd be better. Pure Fail.

Maybe I am a minority in gaming but I work with people all day long as a counselor.  When I get home and play a game, I don't want to play with other people.  I enjoy a rich single player gaming experience.

The focus on multiplayer, social gaming, and community gaming is a turn off for me.

The concept is nice; however, I just want to pick up and play a game.  I do not want to be bothered by yet another layer of crap.  I can see games using this to give players wepons, etc. and that kills me.  When I purchase a game I want to play it with everything, I do not enjoy having to play it for weeks on end to unlock a better gun.  Let alone being pushed to purcahse multiple crapy games to unlock some useless badge or trinket

@mjswooosh Obviously its going to be much bigger of a blunder financially than that. I think that it is crystal clear that Amazon and Gamestop have agreements with Microsoft to buy - better yet "take on" as they call it, a certain amount of consoles from the company. I don't know nor care where these indications are coming from because I can say with a gut feeling that these figures are falsely put out there so that investments into the Xbox one don't dry out i.e. game-developers, stores, companies etc not wanting to have to do anything with the Xbox one, nor microsoft consoles in the future any-more. With no doubt if you launch a poll anywhere I estimate that about 70% will favor PS4 over the Xbox-1. The vast majority of the 30% will not be interested in next-gen consoles at all. Microsoft has done everything wrong that Playstation has done right THIS time around. And this is all coming from a PC-gamer with a dusty/scratched PS3 that he slightly regrets buying for the launch-price.

@raahsnavj Yeah, it's like MS said, "How can we design our achievement system to be more like an MMO's reward system from 10 years ago?"

When asked about the specifics of the XBOX ONE/ZUNE bundle, Major Nelson said:

"We're exploring new and innovative ways to expand the XBOX ONE experience with an emphasis on adding functionality and value beyond current gen limitations...  along with a Zune."

That's great, but some people are calling XBOX ONE a VCR-LOOKIN' TERROR BOX 1000, among other things.

"Hey, haters are gonna hate, but they haven't played the absolutely fabulous games that are shooting out of the cloud!"

But even MS has said they're not certain yet how to effectively utilize the cloud for XBOX ONE.

"Hey, what about that SPARK, huh?"

Uh, sure.  And a lot of people thought the family plan was good until they started looking at the reality of the service and the issues it raises.

"Whoa, people just need to calm down and look at that crazy RYSE game.  Man, that's some crazy, insane, off-the-hook action!"

That reminds me...  now you're advocating authenticating every 24 hours on a cell phone?  Tethering a cell phone to the XBOX ONE.  Isn't that invasive on all ends?

"Hey, you can play some kooky games with Kinect.  Look at all the crazy things I can do with my arms and legs!  That's fun, right?"

We're still worried about privacy issues with that camera and all.

"Privacy smivacy.  Don't worry, be happy!  That's our motto at Microsoft!"

Can we at least trade used games at...

"Whoa, gotta go.  No more time to chat.  Stay righteous XBOX fans, and don't forget your Zune!  We've got tons of these pieces of crap."

@berserker66666 Oldest trick in the book, you plug in a xbox or playstation controller in your pc. You download or write a simple C# program to use it in games, map or auto-map the controls, have the according buttons pop-up on your screen during in-game hints and/or what-not. Well, who am I kidding?. They're microsoft, all they had to do was probably just plug in the controller and port the xbox 360 button/keys.

@xCobrax112 Good thoughts. The numbers I'm throwing around are quoted straight from a Gamestop regional manager who I'm good friends with and an Amazon rep who keeps me up to speed on stuff (for personal and business reasons). Whether these numbers are accurate or not out of the gate, my educated guesstimate says you are most likely correct in your assessment.

If I were a betting man I'd say the launch numbers might not look so bad for MS, perhaps within shouting distance of Sony due to all the uninformed consumers who will go with the One simply because they have a 360. But, by the end of 2014 I think year-over-year sales are going to show a significant PS4 advantage as word of mouth begins to spread.

Whether that advantage is 2:1, 3:1, or greater is anyone's guess at this point...but I can't see MS matching Sony's sales long term with this set of policies in place. They are going to have to reverse course or this gen's race is already pretty much over.

@xCobrax112 @mjswooosh More than you think. Will Gamestop or any company whose used-games market is a major part of their business support MS, the same company trying to kill the used-games market? We are talking about Microsoft: Mr. No-more-renting, Mr. No-more-sharing, Mr. No-more-selling, unless we dictate how it's done, IF the publishers agree and IF they get a share of the pie.

How about all these stores renting games?

VHS won not because it was better but because you could rent movies anywhere. If the only games you can rent are PS4s then the future is clear... If the only games that you can borrow or lend, to and from a friend, is on a PS4 then the future is clear. If the only console where you can get used games at a price they are worth, and not the price it was sold to at first, then the future is clear also.

They are people here saying they will buy Microsoft whatever, but MS is no Apple and gamers are better consumers than one thinks.

The Zune was a victim of circumstance. If they would have released earlier they could have given Apple a good run. I never had one, but my cousin's was awesome. The interface was really elegant...I'm glad that it's somewhat intact on Windows Phone.

The Kin was probably their only colossal failure. A website is selling some leftovers for $25 for the next few hours...I'm tempted to get one if only to have a piece of history.
