Xbox One supports 3D, 4K

Microsoft reveals new video compatibility options for upcoming next-generation platform.

by

The Xbox One will support 3D and 4K, Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has confirmed.

Asked in a recent Yahoo Q&A session if the next-generation platform would support the video options, Hryb said, "Indeed. Xbox One supports both 3D and 4K."

Neither feature was discussed during the Xbox One reveal event on Tuesday. Current-generation platforms like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 support 3D already.

4K's official name is Ultra HD. It is being touted as the next version of high definition and aims to replace 1080i/p as the highest-resolution signal available for video content.

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will also support 3D and 4K. At the platform's announcement in February, Sony explained that the PS4 will support 4K output, but only for content like photos and videos, not games.

It is not clear if the same will be true for the Xbox One. For more on Microsoft's next-generation platform, check out GameSpot's interview with Xbox executive Phil Spencer on used games, always-on, and Kinect 2.0.

Once again Playstation might have the lowest resolution games GJ Sony...

Sony still makes games in 720p :/

Nobody says they aren't focusing on gaming but the truth is as they stated more people are using their Xbox 360 to watch Netflix etc.. than playing games.  The press conference was for a reveal of their hardware not a software display.  I understand as a gamer wanting to see games but we all have to look at it for what it is, there were some games shown and we know graphically it will do some amazing stuff but when I tune in to a console reveal I expect to see the console and not a controller and some games....

Wait wait wait. They won't add backwards compatibility because "nobody will use it", but they add the abilities to play in 3D and 4K resolution? Yeah, because EVERYONE I know uses a 3DTV.

So. Is it me, or are they appealing to an even smaller amount of consumers than they were yesterday?

If the game/movie is good I don't mind a 480P/720P resolution like  GTA V, but give me a 4K game like Sega's latest Alien vs Predator and I will through it directly from the window.

Also remember that 480P Wii > no games yet  HD WiiU

4K is not for the general user right now. MS may be trying to open the console up to the business market and this is where the feature may be used as a lot of businesses have too much money to burn on things like this. Also the Kinects features, Can you imagine how much money they will make if the Xbox One becomes the standard for business conference calls..

Also they may be planning on running this console for another 10 years which future proofs it just in case 4k becomes a standard inbetween that time frame.

Who cares im sure alot of people wont buy a 4k tv, those things cost like $5,000 and thats the cheapest/basic one, i seen another one from sony that sells for $25,000 who the heck is gonna buy that besides a millionaire??

Too bad 360 one will  barely handle 1080p games at 60fps, if that. You will never see a 4k game running on on 360 one

3D is awesome, you can't watch a good 3d movie and still think you prefer 2d. It's like saying you prefer standard def to hi def.

I doubt for a second many games could be powered in 4K with a mid range graphics card.
Its more likely for films, and pictures as with the PS4. The PS4 has slightly more powerful hardware, and that simply couldn't run 4K.
Heck, the GTX 780 just announced can just about run at 30fps at lower than 3K res.

4K is pointless. Nothing is 4K at all yet. 3D is gimmick garbage and i'll never buy it.

4K/Ultra HD = migraines for me unfortunately. I can only watch 1080p for a limited amount of time too :(

On a happy note, it means Skyrim lasted way longer for me than other people :P

biggest question is this. How many FPS can a game on 4k run on your console?

That's nice and all but... Have you seen the price of TV's, Projectors, etc. that support 4K ?  I have enough money for anything out there but I think my new Ps4 and Xbox One when I get them can wait, my 60" Samsung will work fine.

Kind of pointless at the moment.  Glad that they support it though.

i doubt that the xbox one will handle 4k gameplay same goes with the ps4...1080p sound about correct for these next gen consoles

xolivierx

the human eye won't even be able to notice higher res than 1080p. I couldn't care less about 4k for I'm not buying a new TV any time soon. Is there even one fkin useful thing about the Xbox one?

I don't really know anything about 4k but... how often does anyone use 3D on their TV? I don't even know anyone who has a TV that can display 3D in the first place...

With the power of PS4, it can handle 8K video without any issue let alone 4K video :).

What's the point when you need a kinect and a talking system for most of the games

Probably soon enough Microsoft might create auto-pilot or something like that so you just watch the game play by itself.

@naji2014 Nintendo need to Also have better hardware performance to Run 4K What about Ultra-Wide With 4K They didn't think about it?

WE NEED Wider Screen to See the beautiful next-gen games run at it!!!

@_fark_ people still think these Next-Gen consoles as "Game Console".So they still can say under this topic "Ps4 will be better than Xbox One". This is just a technology WAR now. Whoever gets the highest population and highest use wins.You buy so called and also overpriced as hell "Phone"s now for what ? To talk and message ? GTFO people be realistic....

@DarthLodI Agree, 3D TV is not "3D" at all it is only to make things "stand out" and "look good", "3D" to me is when holograms start to develop.

@hadlee73 I understand 3d giving people problems, but how can more pixels give you a headache? Your eye naturally should see more detail than the equivalent of 1080p right?

Michael83917
Michael83917

@darkteddi   30 - 60fps, assuming previous gen quality or slightly better (PC game I mean).

I'm basing that on my old PC running multi monitor set up at close to 4k resolution without any problem at max settings. It was a core 2 duo 3.2ghz cpu (xbone/ps4 will probably beat that) with 8 gb ddr2 ram (again they beat that since they will use ddr3/gddr5) and an ATI 5870 gpu (unknown if they will beat that, but will probably be in that ballpark).

@Evil__Homer

Also, think of how crazy it would be to try and stream 4k video content, especially with H265 compression not even being widely available yet.  Broadband speeds would have to be a lot better than they are now, at least in America, in order to support that kind of resolution.

Hell, even 1080p can be troublesome to stream depending on your connection/hardware.

Michael83917
Michael83917

@xolivierx  Yeah the human eye can definitely see way more. ... or way less!

It really depends on the distance between you and the screen (and also your eyes, get checked for glasses lol).  I game at 5760x1200 pixels sometimes (three 1080 monitors). I can totally see all three screens, surprise, surprise. And on the central monitor I can definitely make out individual pixels. It's not really that big a deal, but having the extra peripheral vision is nice.

jmc88888
jmc88888

@xolivierx

Complete bull.  The human eye can see far more than that.  It also can see more than 60 FPS.

jmc88888

@PSYCHOV3N0M

Exactly.  It can support video playback of it, the problem is, would 4k even be on bluray or would they want to change it.  At least being online technically they could update the firmware to potentially support it if 4k is on bluray.

Also techincally they could make games for 4k....the thing is they would have to be really crappy considering the power to run them at that resolution.  They could probably do pong or really simple games, but not anything resembling a modern game.

Sam_021
Sam_021

@PSYCHOV3N0M Exactly, they can both support 8K video when the time comes, it's not a big deal!

Michael83917
Michael83917

@darkteddi

by close to 4K I meant

1920*1200*3=6912000 pixels

4K = 3840*2160= 8294400 pixels

Michael83917
Michael83917

@jmc88888 @PSYCHOV3N0M

Well as I understand it, there is one other thing - you have to have enough hi-def plugs, ie 2x HDMI, DVI, etc. I may be wrong, but I am under the impression you need more than one such cable to output above 1080.
