Xbox One Skype improved with better chat, fewer bugs

The update also adds contact filtering and a tutorial.

Skype for Xbox One’s first update adds improved chat capability, contact filtering, a first time tutorial, and gets rid of several bugs, Skype has announced on its official blog.

The improved chat keeps conversations in sync across multiple devices, adds push notifications alerting you to new messages, and provides a longer chat history that can hold up to 1,000 messages, as opposed to just the past seven days.

The contact filtering update allows you to filter your contacts by who is online, making it easier to find those who are available to chat. A new first time tutorial will teach users how to use video calling and chatting using the Xbox One. Skype also said that it’s been listening to feedback and is working hard fix issues users have been experiencing.

Finally, the update adds new “hidden heroes” emoticons, which are based on characters from the upcoming movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Skype for Xbox One is limited to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. You can find out more about it by reading our previous coverage.

The only person who ever use my Skype is my mother.. That's the only time she ever takes interest in my console, doesn't see the point in games... Other than that, she feels like I'm wasting my money.... THE IRONY!!!

What's with all these rumors saying Microsoft plans on dumping the Xbox brand? Analysts say the brand isn't making Microsoft any money and that they should just give up because the PS4 is outselling it. So when the PS2 outsold the original Xbox does that mean they should have just given up? No, they tried again and the Xbox 360 became a big success. Now the PS4 isn't that far ahead the Xbox One. A 3.5 million sales gap isn't a big deal, especially when this gen might last over 7 years again.

Microsoft has plenty of support from developers and gamers, so why would Microsoft let all that go to waste?

Hate to sound so uncool for saying something positive, but this is actually good news

And with Titanfall now out, am definitely getting an X1 soon.

Pretty much all I use the X1 for now anyway, the only time I want that massive creepy spy camera looking into my apartment.

Absolutely disgusting. Consoles shouldn't be allowed to do anything but play games. I wish my consoles didn't have Netflix on them

Using Skype and Titanfall at the same time is epic. It's like we're actually in the game. I recommend everyone pick-up an Xbox One just to try it.

i wonder if they fixed the problem with people able to use voice controls over skype on other xbones, that stuff was hilarious.

"Xbox One Skype improved with better chat, less bugs" but gamers are still asking "WTF do you think I want this instead of games?"

Nice, Microsoft. That's deffinitely what players want from a console.

@tendoboy1984  Problem is Microsoft bundles Xbox financial results with other portable devices so it's hard to get a sense of how the brand itself is doing.

In the 360 generation, I suspect the Xbox did better than PS3 overall.  Live Gold was a (pardon the pun) gold mine.  Microsoft didn't incur any of the added overhead Sony paid for the "free" games bundled with PS+.  And Plus was always optional.  In terms of console sales, MS and Sony were neck-and-neck.  However the Xbox didn't have a pricey blu ray player.  And MS all but ignored the Japanese market since it's Sony's home turn.

The only drag on the 360--and it was a big one--was RROD.  That cost Microsoft over $1 billion to resolve.

I don't think either Sony or Microsoft would be in the gaming market if it wasn't a money-maker.  Consoles are priced to be profitable.  They make money on every game, peripheral, online services...pretty much every ancillary purchase.

That said, the big issue is that Xbox is probably not as profitable as other Microsoft divisions.  Their bread-and-butter is software licensing fees.  They make billions off of the licensing for desktop and network operating systems, Office, web platforms, etc.  There are some investors who think Microsoft would look a whole lot better financially if they ditched the mobile phone business, tablets, Xbox and other projects which don't earn as much money as the software licensing.  In the short term, that advice is sound.  But there are benefits to having a wider range of services and offerings, too.

Whatever happens, Xbox will not cease to exist.  If Microsoft looks to divest itself of the console business, Xbox will either be spun-off to its own business or sold to someone who actually wants it.  Honestly that could be the best thing that ever happened to Xbox. Right now, Microsoft tends to be very stingy with Xbox because the division's financial performance is being measured against those other more profitable areas.  They want to squeeze Xbox as much as possible to keep investors content with its performance.

If Xbox were spun-off or sold, scrutiny over its performance would change dramatically.

@tendoboy1984 if you got rid of the ps4 sales and only focused on xbox one sales, the xbox one would be the fast selling console.  People seem to keep ignoring that.  360 was a success and xbox one is outpacing it.  Xbox brand is not going anywhere this gen.

@XNEXUS666X

So guess it doesnt bother you that your cellphone and tablet have cameras on them? The western media has broken down human dignity so much most volunteer their personal info out of narcissism so no need to spy. Maybe if the ACLU gets a Kinect for their office it would come in handy for that.

@DIGN  Kind of like how party chat works? No one needs Skype on a console.

@uchihasilver titanfal is awesome you should try it before slating it, and ill get my response in to you claiming youve tried it.... yeah sure you tried, ofc you did sweetheart i completely believe you

tendoboy1984
tendoboy1984

@bluefox755  You need Kinect to do broadcasting on Twitch, Skype, voice commands, etc. And if you buy a PS4 you need its camera to do the same things. Stop trolling.

@deadpen More and better triple A games than their direct competitor, so that's not really a problem.

gajbutler
gajbutler

@deadpen  Yes because the people who're doing this would be developing games if they weren't *rolls eyes*. If the console didn't have all these features then people would be complaining, tbh Kinect makes Skype great, how it follows you around the room and auto zooms, I love it.

tendoboy1984
tendoboy1984

@RC-Sev  These consoles already do much more than just play games. Having video chat isn't a bad thing at all. The PS3 had video chat also, but that didn't stop people from buying it.

tendoboy1984
tendoboy1984

@RC-Sev  Because the PS3 failed so miserably even though it "only does everything".

If you just want a game console, buy a Wii U. There is nothing wrong with having extra features with these consoles. They already do much more than just playing games, you can watch movies, broadcast and view gameplay videos on Twitch, video chat, voice chat, etc.

STOP TROLLING.

Darknight765

@RC-Sev  Better video chat in addition to the only next gen exclusive game worth playing on consoles.  Sure why not.

@tjkraz Agree with the most part, however only this bit "And MS all but ignored the Japanese market since it's Sony's home turn." MS did try to capture that area. In fact they spent a lot of money luring Japanese developers on to the 360. The fact that the majority of the games didn't fare so well (excluding FF13). Was an indication to the Japanese developers. Tales of vesperia is a good example. Sold a lot less on the 360, and what ended up happening was Bandai stopped making any more copies of the game - it's hard to find any copies (I have a copy though). But continue to publish the tales of series on the PS3, which says a lot. With the XB1, that's what MS has pretty much done. Haven't invested so much money in to the Asian market. They know it won't sell so well.

I use Skype to video chat with my girlfriend. So yes some people use it. Just because YOU don't want something doesn't mean no one wants it.

I know some people don't like the Kinect, but I personally love it. Without a camera I can't properly broadcast on Twitch, use Skype, or do voice navigation on the console.

@gajbutler @nazgoroth @deadpen  i hate people like you that act brain dead  "Unplug it if you don't want it" oh so if i unplug it cos i dont want it can you give the the extra $100 it cost me? no. . . well then point proven it, the only time that argument can be used is when idiots claim they are gonna get spied on ¬.¬

gajbutler
gajbutler

@nazgoroth @gajbutler @deadpen  Unplug it if you don't want it, I don't see why people hate it so much, it doesn't add any cost to the consumer any more, the PS4 and Xbox One are the same price now when you factor in the game you get with the One.

Tbh lots of people buy a camera for the PS4 any ways, especially if you stream on twitch.

@Darknight765 @RC-Sev  its isn't a constant 60fps >.> it drops to 30's jesus don't act like a fan boy and claim what isn't true but either way i agree with others this is by far not a next gen game and i wouldn't expect it to be this early in it's lifespan

Darknight765
Darknight765

@normanislost @RC-Sev @Darknight765  Name one game that was released on console and PC at the same time that doesn't look better on PC?  The game is 50gbs on PC and 18 gbs on X1, I'd hope it would be somewhat better.  Oh and still not on PS4.

Darknight765
Darknight765

@RC-Sev @Darknight765  Don't see how it isn't.  Silky smooth 60FPS with dedicated servers at a data centers.  An argument that it also on 360 is a lame one to try to say it isn't next gen.
