Sorry, Project Gotham Racing fans, Microsoft confirmed today that it is not working on a new entry in the racing series for Xbox One--or any game at all in the franchise for that matter.

"We aren't currently working on PGR," Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer said on Twitter. Spencer is part of the team at Microsoft responsible for green-lighting games, so he'd know.

Spencer said he "really liked" the PGR franchise, but said the decision to not have the series in active development comes down to the "number of racing franchises" at Microsoft.

His comments suggest that it's no longer viable to have more than one core racing series in active development. And with Forza Motorsport 5 taking the spotlight, that presumably leaves no room for PGR. Forza 5 has sold over 1 million units to date.

The most recent PGR title was 2007's Project Gotham Racing 4 for Xbox 360, developed by the now-defunct studio Bizarre Creations.

Microsoft's approach to racing games does not seem to be matched by competitor Sony. In addition to Motorstorm developer Evolution Studios' DriveClub, a Gran Turismo game is in development for the PS4, according to Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi. If true, it would mean Sony has two marquee racing franchises in the works for the PS4.
