Xbox One Project Gotham Racing title not in the works

"We aren't currently working on PGR," Xbox boss Phil Spencer says.

Sorry, Project Gotham Racing fans, Microsoft confirmed today that it is not working on a new entry in the racing series for Xbox One--or any game at all in the franchise for that matter.

"We aren't currently working on PGR," Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer said on Twitter. Spencer is part of the team at Microsoft responsible for green-lighting games, so he'd know.

Spencer said he "really liked" the PGR franchise, but said the decision to not have the series in active development comes down to the "number of racing franchises" at Microsoft.

His comments suggest that it's no longer viable to have more than one core racing series in active development. And with Forza Motorsport 5 taking the spotlight, that presumably leaves no room for PGR. Forza 5 has sold over 1 million units to date.

The most recent PGR title was 2007's Project Gotham Racing 4 for Xbox 360, developed by the now-defunct studio Bizarre Creations.

Microsoft's approach to racing games does not seem to be matched by competitor Sony. In addition to Motorstorm developer Evolution Studios' DriveClub, a Gran Turismo game is in development for the PS4, according to Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi. If true, it would mean Sony has two marquee racing franchises in the works for the PS4.

Loved the online racing on PGR4 and still give in a spin now and again, It's a bit gutting there will be no more.

I honestly forgot PGR and Forza were two different series. PGR was the first game I bought for my 360. At some point I just moved on to Forza and then they merged together in my stupid brain. I just never gave it any thought. I guess I just forgot about PGR when I started playing Forza. That was a long time ago.

I thought Forza Horizon was PGR successor?

why would you be? Grid, Forza, and NFS for have made PGR pretty irrelevant over the past few years. Why settle for PGR when there are better franchises out there?

This is not new. He said a month or more ago that they aren't working on it because they already have two racing franchises, which was widely interpreted to mean that Forza and Horizons are considered separate franchises now. GS just likes to invent "bad news" about he Xbox One. Obnoxious.

- In other news Xbox One title "Infamous: Uncharted" is also not in the works.

So basically, when there's no news GameSpot can come up with a game thats not in development and then get confirmation from MS that it's really not!

PGR 4 was one of the greatest racing games I've ever played.  Who could ever forget driving a classic Maserati race car around a snowy Nurburgring?  Alas, Bizarre Creations is no more, and neither is this franchise.

Of course not.  When you spend most of your time working on apologist PR and Spin, who has time for a classic franchise?

I miss the sound track to pgr 1 they just don't want to try to make something that could be a competitor to its own self then they would have stress of two things. I think it's a move out of fear Phill Spencer is a tool. That and also that a new pgr would be more demanding.

I owned PGR 3 and 4 back in 2009. They are probably my favourite racing games to this day.

What with the articles about random games "not" in development? Must be a slow news day.

It's probably best since it would be a new team working on it other than the guys of the original series --- might not be as much fun. I enjoyed the original PGR series --- have all the games.  I'm not really a Forza fan but I bought the new one on X1 just to have a racer to play with --- I'm sure one Forza game will be it for Forza for me this gen. I'm Pretty much doing the same with Gran Turismo whenever it comes out for the PS4, for comparison sake. Didn't pick up a great deal of racers on the Xbox 360 as I was burnt out after the PS2 and Original Xbox were over saturated with racers. Going to give some of the new gen racers a go this run and see if anything has changed other than flashy graphics and the numbers at the end of each one. Looking forward to some of the various racers coming out.

Gimme Forza Horizon 2,  a better game than any of the PGR games. Hell, Forza Horizon is even better than Forza 5.

BOOOOOOOOO! Why not have another exclusive under the belt?

Too bad. It's tough to find racing games that are somewhere in between ultra realistic simulations and kiddie arcade. Most new racing games seem to be one or the other and that's a problem for me because I don't like either one.

I would love to have another PGR.

Why not have two different racing franchises? PS4 is going to have two with Gran Turismo and DriveClub.

Sad since PGR was alot more memorable than forza ever was I still remember that Xmas when my brother had the real Xbox 1(0riginal) and he showed me that you can burn music right into the hard drive of the Xbox....memories...as we whipped, at that time the most beautiful cars at that time....then I would leave him to go play gta3 on the ps2 lol.

PGR was a great game, but FM is even better.  Who needs both.

There's no need for PGR anymore; MS already has Forza to keep rehashing every two years or so.

Not much point in having separate arcade and sim racers now, the recent Forza titles have just been somewhere in between the two

Ever heard of Forza, numnuts? And it's "racing".

Japanese_Jade

@Tigerbite2  They're both two different kinds of racers. PGR is an arcade racer and Forza is a simulator. My Point? Microsoft could use both if Sony is pushing out DriveClub (Arcade) and Gran Turismo (Sim).

Bring back PRG, Phil!
