Xbox One Killer Instinct characters will be $5 each

Microsoft confirms upcoming fighting game will launch with free fighter Jago, rest will be available for purchase individually or through bundles.

Free-to-play Xbox One fighter Killer Instinct will release with one free character--Jago. The rest, Microsoft confirmed today, will be available for $5 each.

Players can also purchase discounted character packages. The Combo Breaker Pack ($20) features the first eight characters (six at launch, two later), while the Ultra Edition ($40) packs in the eight characters, as well as accessory packs, costumes, and a digital copy of the original Killer Instinct game.

Microsoft also today announced the latest fighter to join the previously confirmed lineup--Thunder. He joins Jago, Sabrewulf, and Glacius for the upcoming fighting game.

Killer Instinct is one of 23 Xbox One launch titles, alongside games like Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4. The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

Microsoft recently said Killer Instinct is "not some hacked-off remake" and not a "cash-in."

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ken Lobb and double helix, so I will stay behind the new KI. I've had the chance to play it and I love it granted its a different direction in the franchise which is why some people are terrified of it, I can see how some of the commenters hate it though. To those that want a fast paced fighter play ultimate marvel vs Capcom 3, KI is not one of those fast paced games it's more along the lines of street fighter alpha 3 in terms of game speed the combos are really cool, the graphics are absolutely stunning, the dynamic music along with many other added features are a huge improvement from the other KI games. I love the old KI games but I really like the change

This game looks so horrible. I used to be a huge KI fan and I am not anymore.  This is nothing like a KI game the characters are horrible. it looks like a low budget capcom game with all the rejected characters from dead japanese fighting games running on a xbox 360.

total garbage this is not a KI game in anyway shape or form it's some wanna be japanese crap with the KI name slapped on it.  They could call this game anything and I would have no clue it is related to KI in anyway. I played this at pax and it plays like garbage too and none of the characters have any moves from the old game so why bother?? you do a move and it does some horrible animation that don't look anything like the move the old game had or it does nothing at all.

It's like taking ryus fireball out or redoing it as another move making it backwards or something it's trash.  combos go by so god damn slow now they have no fucking sense of slow and it so easy to brake these damn combos that is all the game is 3 hits and a combo brakeer then they start again.

The game and xbox one is shipping not done end of story,.  Not that it would help this game it was going down the wrong path of suckage from the start. it is so dull uninspired and void of any personality at I wonder why they even bother and just kill the game off.

i miss the old days when Fighting Games had unlockable people, i understand the reason why u have to buy the fighters, but this is lame, i want the option to play as any fighter because they're there, not only pick out on some fighters for 5 dollars each, like wtf. im sticking with my ps3 and 360 until i find a need to upgrade to next gen

What ever happened to buying the full version of a game??? WTF is going on with gaming? We'll let you play the demo for free & then charge you for the rest of the content. That's basically what they said. Playing as Jago is the demo. Y can't you stupid ppl who like this idea see this? Microtransactions has got to be the most stupid business model I've ever heard. When something is free to play, that means its a demo. I wanted this game but now that its not on a disc & I have to buy all my characters, I'll pass.

BlondOverBlue
BlondOverBlue

@Henninger I'm a fan of fighting games, but most fighters have what I call "roster bloat" - tons of characters just for the sake of having characters. Look at MK and Injustice. While I am a fan of both games and don't mind the rosters as I love the characters and histories behind them, most people usually gravitate towards only two, sometimes three characters they'll use religiously effectively making the other characters useless and unnecessary.

Yet, you still pay $60 for the whole she-bang. "Microtransactions" actually makes more sense for people who only care about certain characters/features because they can buy which characters/features they want.

However, the problem I would have with this model is when I want all the features/characters, it better not cost more than it would if the game was released on a disc with all content included (DLC, in the traditional sense, excluded, of course). Will this happen? Oh, probably.

Yet that aside, they kind of do it with DLC now. You buy a game for $60, then say all DLC total costs $20, there's $80 you spend total when you can just wait for the inevitable "Game of the Year" or "Complete" editions which have everything on-disc for the same cost of the day-one release version.

In the end, it's basically pick-your-poison to have it "now", wait a year or so for the GOTY edition, or just stop playing games period.

Will i be able to verse against the char i have not bought is the only question i really care about.

i would presume so but games nowadays find new ways to disappoint me, on that note if they don't confirm it's possible then we'll all look like fools when we all think it to be so.

I'm really worried about this game... I want it to succeed really badly... but 8 characters?

@zfazal84 There's probably not gonna be more than 11, considering the previous games

When I first heard of KI being rebooted, I could not have been more excited! I am a fan of fighting games, particularly Mortal Kombat and its incredible reboot in 2011. I played KI and KI2 in the arcades and loved the franchise. However, when I saw the initial release videos, I was scared of what I saw.

On an aesthetic level, this reboot looks too close to SF4 for my comfort. I haven't played any build of the game, so I can't comment on the gameplay, but from what I see, again, it eerily mirrors SF and other fighters. It doesn't give off that "KI feel" we know and love.

Then there's the roster, or lack there of at this point.  The game is slated for November and here it is on the cusp of September, and we know of only four characters at this point? Really? I'm sorry, but considering that KI, outside of the bosses Eyedol and Gargos, had a total of twelve characters and we may only get eight in all? DLC better be planned.

As for the "a la carte" pricing, as long as if all characters purchased can be used online despite others not buying the characters their opponent has, I'm fine with it.

Given Microsoft's recent track record from everything from Windows Phone, Windows 8, Surface, its initial blundering of the XB1 announcement, and from what I have seen of KI so far, I am not convinced this is going to be a good game, much less a great one.

box one you suck I was going to buy you when I heard about the new killer instinct I saw it the game play it looks amazing and its going to be free I got super excited and that rare is behind it so FUCKING COOL!! Then I heard a rumor that you have only get one person to play as? Are you fucking serious rare ware you are going to make me pay 5$-10$ for a single character are you mad that made me change my whole mind about buying your Xbox one I only wanted the system for this one game and when I have to dish out 60 fucking dollars just to have all the character not including the extra stages that also cost five to ten dollars that is ridiculous that’s over 70+ dollars on a game that "free" next time include everything in THE FUCKING GAME I wouldn't mind paying the money up front but to lie about a game is another thing and to piss all over your fan base is just a cheap scam I know that other game company are doing this like capcom but they give you some characters. In other words Rare ware and Microsoft Next time you want to Fuck people out of there money don't lie and use cheap tactics just release the game with all of its content your truly - former Xbox customer Ronald Anderson

The whole make-up of the game is very suspicious. Don't get me wrong, but I like how you can play the game for free with one character. And the $40 price tag sounds great, but with only 8 characters? And they're also mentioning accessory packs and costumes? Microsoft seems to be holding back on this game . Maybe they release 85% of the game at launch. Then later comes the other content that they'll charge when it should have been included in the game. Also other actions from Microsoft in the past where they charge more to the consumer has lost my confidence with the company. Looks as if they need to make up for the huge loss from Windows 8.   >.<

Twiztid-Maddox
Twiztid-Maddox

They've chosen the right four characters to play so far, Double Helix should now choose Orchid, TJ Combo, Fulgore and Spinal as the remaining four. If they decide to add more characters, I say add Riptor, Tusk, Maya and Cinder as DLC!

As a fan of the old, one and only 2D Killer Instinct games, I say to this Street Fighter rip-off of a remake: You can keep your characters and game altogether and go milk yourself another cow. I'd rather spend that money on the next Mortal Kombat :)

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying KI and KI2 in my PC, that's all I need.

deathmetalgod

I don't get why people are angry. I only used to use Jago anyway, back in the day. You only experiment with other characters for a few minutes, as a novelty, then go back to your favourite. What I'll be getting here is a free game, or maybe one for $5 if I buy Spinal too. I wish every game were like this.

Every edition of Street Fighter I've ever bought, and I've bought a lot, would have been free for me if they'd have done this cos I only use Guile.

and, i can't come close to understanding how someone like you can't see how this trend and type of game is another way that the gaming industry is being ruined.

btw, "free to play" is a laughable misnomer specifically created to fool the masses.  enjoy.

The gaming industry is just that.

Please don't criticise it for the shortcomings of people who want to get ahead in the industry at the expense of their consumers.

stupid idea to take a broken street fighter 4 rip off and tack 2 even more broken ki concepts that are even more broken than the first ki game and call it a new ki game. there is no KI left in this and the rest of it is just a tub of garbage that has a horrible new artwork for all the characters and UI.

i hate evo so it was not even worth my driving trip there to see this thing.

Sonicgod
Sonicgod

i played this game it evo it is 100% pure sucktastic ass.

it not even a real KI game it is some capcom street fighter 4 rip off they are trying to pass off as a ki game and it fucking looks like it is running on a xbox 360 or ps3. hell i have seen better looking games on a xbox 360.  hell i can buy better fighting games on the xbox 360 and save $500.

i could not tell if this was a ki game unless i was told i thought i was playing street fighter 5/darkstalkers 4 the low budget version.

if you though double helix butchered silent hill wait until you see this game it is even worse. the silent hill game they made is great compared to this. they could not make a real fighting game if they had a gun to their heads.

So no the gameplay also sucks  it is not going to save it.

BestJinjo

A piecemeal fighting game where the characters & costumes cost $40 to get the full experience. Why not call it a $39.99 fighting game and be done with it?

This free to play gaming is becoming a joke because the required DLC/content costs as much as the game. Defeats the purpose of free to play.

tranceology3
tranceology3

@BestJinjo I think the main purpose to these "free-to-play" games is to combat piracy, in a non DRM approach. Rather than release the whole game out there as one package that can get pirated, why not break it into multiple parts, and give 10% out for free so pirates can get their fix and forget about the whole game. The free-to-play model logically sounds good; give the consumer the choice of what content they want to purchase and they will be happy. However, it's hard for consumers to justify the content they bought to the amount they spent....they end up feeling ripped off. When they spend a large chunk, 40-60$ on the full game, they feel this is the full game, and are not missing out on anything else the game has to offer. I think mentally, smaller transactions here and there make a person feel they are spending more, rather than one lump sum at equal value.

joey2010

@tranceology3  Rubbish. You must  be one of those rich spoiled kids who hasn't worked for a dime in your life. These greedy companies are sucking your pockets dry and this is what you have to say in return.

udubdawgz

@tranceology3

lol.  it's an approach to mislead and fool suckers into spending their cash on something they think is a good deal, but, is merely a jedi mind trick for the foolish and weak.

tranceology3
tranceology3

@joey2010 @tranceology3 They are not taking any money from me, I have never once spent a dime on any free-to-play games. I don't know where you got the idea from my post that I am a spoiled kid that has never worked. I was making a comment about how the free-to-play model is flawed and does not work, in no way was I saying I agree with it.

If they made the game, lets say, Red Dead Redemption a free-to-play game and gave you one little town, and a small area to roam and play for free, but you had to pay $5 to unlock new locations, or weapons, or battles etc.... If the game ended up costing $60 from all the extra purchases, consumers would complain and feel they are getting ripped off when in fact the game would still be amazing. They would not understand what the $5 is really getting them. They would be happier to just spend $60 and get the full game. I think the free-to-play model can sucker in people, and make them spend more cash on less content, but I also think you can pay for a legit amount of content.

Now mobile games that have free-to-play models like Candy Crush are dangerous, and should be illegal, they deliberately make an addicting game that you can't beat unless you pay. Plus that payment does not last, it only lets you pass a few levels. Even though people say they are good and beat the levels without paying, the game is designed to make a level easy over time, so then the next level is hard again, and you are stuck in this virtual challenge, and are compelled to spend money.

There is gonna be a lot of Jago vs Jago online.
