Xbox One keyboard and mouse support possible

Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" says if developers are interested in adding that support, "we'll certainly help them do that."

The Xbox One may add keyboard and mouse support sometime in the future, Microsoft director of Xbox Live programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has revealed.

During a Newegg TV interview (via Videogamer), Hryb said if developers are interested in adding that kind of support, Microsoft will assist in making it happen.

"We'll certainly have this great SDK for developers to do what they like. If that's something they're interested in doing, we'll certainly help them do that," Hryb said.

Hryb said designing for a 2-foot PC gaming experience is different than a nine or ten-foot console experience, so developers "have to be really focused on what is that like and are maximizing for the largest possible audience."

"Certainly it's possible, but we don't have anything to announce at this time," he said.

Currently On Xbox 360, players can connect a keyboard for text input, but mice are not supported. Hryb said even if the Xbox One does add mouse and keyboard support, the PC and console control styles don't exactly match up.

"We kind of have this concept of when you're playing a PC game you're leaning forward," Hryb said. "With an Xbox game, sometimes you lean back. You're just kinda having fun. And I don't want to incite the religious debate that will ensue, because I'm very aware. We want to provide a gaming experience that people enjoy, certainly with Windows--that's our other large gaming platform at Microsoft. So there's something there, but right now we're really focused on really the console space."

The Xbox One launches on November 22. The console's controller features a number of updates over its predecessor, including new thumbstick shape and grip texture, a redesigned D-Pad, and triggers with haptic feedback.

In addition, the Xbox One controller automatically knows who is playing when the controller is passed to a friend, thanks to the pad pairing with Kinect. Lastly, the battery pack is inside the controller's body, allowing players more room to hold the pad.

To all you ignorent people !

I have a Ps3 and never played without a keyboard and mouse on firt and thired persone shooter game using a XFPS Rateup interface.

So sorry to all the ps3 and xbox 360 player but there is player playing against you with a key board and mouse.

My point is, i don't see wy ps4 and xbox one shouldn't be compatible with mouse and keyboard directly out from the machine because eventuly we will be able to get interface for the use of keyboard and mouse. Anyway, i will buy the machine that let me use keyboard and mouse and its the same for alot of people

I see that coming in handy with Project Spark! Windows 8 PC' version of Project Spark will be part of the same community as XBOX One's, so until they get that going, typing in text will be easier on the PC, and then you can move it over to XBOX One and work on it there . This cross play they have planned is pretty cool!

That sounds like a mistake. I can appreciate the benefits of having options, but the playing field of competitive gaming would be lopsided. I might as well move to PC if I am going to have to learn to use mouse and keyboard. And I "would" have to learn mouse and keyboard, I am not going to get the shit kicked out of me when playing Battlefield because I prefer the gamepad.

With the X1, it just seems like everything they announce is just a maybe, could be, and the vision for the future crap.  I call bulls**t on anything they say anymore.

Why bother with keyboard and mouse on an XBone when I could just use it for my computer?  Not going to get into some nonsense about PC's are more powerful or something, but If I have both controller AND keyboard and mouse support for my PC, why bother with that on the XBone?  Especially if it isn't guaranteed to work for all games or even a large amount of them?

I'll stick with my computer and play with controller and keyboard and mouse.  Freedom of choice yo.

I have a PS1 that has a mouse that I played Xcom with.  Nice to see several gens later, you maybe able to use a mouse....

Wouldn't that basically make it a cheap PC hybrid of some sort? Just asking.

Oh, and people with a controller going against someone playing with K/M is no competition, especially with FPS.

I Would Love to have Keyboard & Mouse support for Xbox One

tightwad34

Don't think that's a good idea. People don't buy an Xbox or Playstation to use a keyboard and mouse. And I know this is reduntant, but if  you want that get a PC, which most people of course do.

I would love to have keyboard and mouse support for strategy games, strategy games are so bad with the joypad.

lol this will kill gamepads in FPS titles like Halo ! I can even own people who are good in Halo 3 with the Xim Edge which is like an K+M emulator for the Xbox 360 and PS3 and I aint even that good in Halo 3 but the pinpoint accuracy of the mouse cant be matched by any gamepads out there.

if MS wants to put keyboard and mouse in XBOX. I will not buy XBOX 1 anymore since it already a PC version I will just update my PC to windows 8 and wait for the kinect be available for PC since they already said kinect will be able to use on PC in future update.

Chalk that up as another useless feature.

KBM is such a lame way to play, even for FPS games, at least a controller feels a bit more like a gun, has a trigger and vibration feedback, even controlling vehicles seems more natural than a keyboard and mouse, pushing a key to accelerate or clicking a mouse to shoot just seems so far removed from what you're actually doing on screen, I don't know how people can enjoy that, and their only argument is that it's faster... I'd just feel like I was cheating if all I did was point and click. There's no honour in using a secretary setup haha, it would feel so flat, disconnected and lose the immersion for me.

Great, create imbalance among players in multiplayer games. I hope if they do it, it only works in SP.

ominous_prime

@Jedilink109 Games like Project Spark would greatly benefit. They also plan on having every XBOX One work as a dev kit, so there are benefits of having mouse and keyboard support for that.

ominous_prime

@erMonezza It's not like they couldn't make it an option to keep K/M players separate from the players using a controller as a matchmaking option.

Hicser03

@erMonezza  while it obviously wouldnt be fair id love to play Halo with a mouse and keyboard, i suck so much with a controller even with the aim assist lol.

@Deaho on a battle grid a controller is doable..

like for a japanese orientated srpg you can get away with a controller, but for a real time strategy game it is a MESS.

tightwad34

@Deaho Well too bad there aren't very many of them for consoles. And your reasoning is exactly why.

@Printul_Noptii i dunno but i am good enough with both...but worse  when i play with K+M....maybe because i stopped playing regular pc games since 2009 but still play BF3 online with my 360controller....mines K/D ratio still aint bad considering the superior K+M that people play with

bzrigger

@bluefox755 Not really. I could see RTS games benefiting from M+K controls - and if multiplayer player-matching can be based on controller choice, then there's no problem there.

However, I would hope that FPS devs would just stick to the standard controller. K+M support is in Dust 514 on the PS3, and the K+M players crush anyone using the DS3.

sammoth

@bluefox755 Actually it's a good feature. With the integration of MMO's and KB/ Mouse support is great for FPS and RTS. Useless to maybe you.

Jedilink109
Jedilink109

@XNEXUS666X *sigh* everything you said is wrong.  There are premium PC peripherals out that GREATLY improve the gameplay experience.  As for "clicking a mouse to shoot" well, you are several times more accurate and significantly faster with a mouse than a controller.  The difference is, on PC if you want to use keyboard and mouse OR a controller (OR BOTH at the same time!) you can in any game.  Not the case with consoles.  It felt weird at first, but once I played some FPS games with a mouse, it's so much better.

mr_england
mr_england

@wolf503 Well, if the Wii was able to figure out which controller you're using, I'm sure the X1 would be able to. All that would be needed is a way to filter match-ups by control type.

ForceSkin

@wolf503 Yeah this would be my issue. A keyboard and mouse will always be faster than a controller

erMonezza

@Hicser03 @erMonezza You and me both, and probably countless more.

I respect people that are good in FPS with a controller.

@sammoth @bluefox755 Ladies, amateurs and slow people use a mouse and keyboard in FPS games to help them.  Pro's don't play on easy mode my friend, they use dual analog sticks.

r_ruiz6047
r_ruiz6047

@sammoth @bluefox755 keyboard and mouse would also have the edge on FPS games. Love the keyboard and mouse integration, hope it happens.

XNEXUS666X
XNEXUS666X

@Jedilink109 @XNEXUS666X Everything I said is wrong? Well since much of what I said is opinion, I can assume you're just self absorbed and a bit simple. I don't want to sit at a desk on kbm when gaming, I do it all day at work. We aren't talking about peripherals or switching between controllers or even PC's, this topic is about kbm support on Xbox One, and if using a mouse to point and shoot is quicker and more accurate, then basically you're saying it's easier. To me that just feels cheap and surely you'd have to agree the Wii Nunchuck controller beats both. I prefer one compact, purpose built controller, you're quite welcome to sit at your secretary desk clicking your mouse and keyboard. Kbm was not designed for gaming, merely used to operate a PC and by millions of secretaries around the world - FACT. Oh, and check out YouTube if you wanna see controllers own kbm. The point? Use what you want, but stop with the rehashed myths to justify your own insecurities about sitting at a desk to play games, it just seems depressing to me. I'll chill back on my couch thanks.

wolf503
wolf503

@mr_england Yeah, as long as they got something to filter it out. But the good thing is, having keyboard and mouse support is a nice step up for consoles. I know PS3 did it, but you couldn't game with them, at least not on any games I tried.

sammoth
sammoth

@XNEXUS666X @ForceSkin @wolf503 Fact.

MS did a statics study on it and they found that console players where getting slaughtered each time in FPS and RTS. It's not even close. Nor ever will be.
