Xbox One Is the More Popular Console on Facebook in the United States

Xbox One on the coasts, PlayStation 4 in the heartland.

by

According to the last official worldwide numbers, PlayStation 4 sold 7 million units to date, putting it well ahead of Xbox One’s 5 million units, but for some reason Microsoft’s console is winning the popularity contest on Facebook.

According to a tally of “likes” among Facebook users in the United States conducted by the Movoto Real Estate Blog, the Xbox One is the most popular console in 22 states, compared to the PS4, which is the most popular console in 19 states. Nine states resulted in a tie, probably because of the way Facebook rounds-off audience estimates. The Wii U was in the running, but didn’t earn more than half the “likes” of either Xbox One or PS4 in any state.

As you can see in the map above, Xbox One is more popular on the coasts and most populated states, while PS4 is more popular in the heartland. According to Movoto, Nevada also had the biggest fan base for both consoles, while Mississippi had the smallest fan base for both.

As you’ve probably already guessed, this doesn’t actually mean a whole lot to either company, most of all because the Facebook data doesn’t reflect actual sales figures. If anything, it might suggest that Xbox One fans are more active Facebook users, or that Microsoft has done more to promote it on that social network.

You can find more interesting numbers from Movoto’s data on its website.

Honestly, both these consoles are lame as neither offer any must have service that I don't already have access to and neither have a game that makes one buy one console over the other... or in the case of this generation any console. Having sales so similar to each other just shows that the gaming industry is failing to deliver quality products that innovate or excite because the devs are only in it for profits and they're not attempting to create anything new while Sony and Microsoft aren't working with the devs to make console exclusives thus driving the consumers to one console over the other. All the work the devs put out now is basically copied from another company in some way or form.

Console gaming has become big business and the lack of attention this gen has generated is because their is no original thought being produced. Nintendo makes innovative stuff, but nobody over the age of 16 is interested in their console and thus is a failure that may generate profit, but struggles to leave any lasting impact on the business. PC and handheld gaming is where the innovation is at now.

Of course the Wii u doesn't get any support due to close minded fanboys...

Seems Xbox One has a heck of a lot more headlines too, and the only real top talked about game so far....

Maybe it's due to demographics.

Xbox One owners are younger. I could see how the 11-16 year old crowd puts a like on Xbone because their friends circle is also young and supports such behavior.

PS4 owners are more mature, don't like to brag about their console on Facebook where you have co-workers, family and stuff. They don't want to be seen as the ones who have no life and actually "Like" a console on Facebook. What's the point??

This is actually hilarious. Kinda like HTC owners hating on other companies. We know there ain't much of them but they're surely loud. lol This is America after all. I'm sure MS is going to win in the USA. I plan to pickup a PS4 too but as of now no good games on that at all. Especially if you're a car nut.

Most "likes" are completed by bots, so this really isn't anything important.

Real gamers don't care about Facebook, so this makes sense.

This isn't surprising at all.  Sony's huge lead is mostly international (where they are in many more markets).  In the U.S., the two are actually very close in sales.

What's the difference between this article and a knife?

The knife has a point.

I'm in PS4 country (Wisconsin), but have an Xbox One.

Just means Microsoft's marketing strategy worked. Try to sell to as many demographics as possible and you will always win. It might be the most popular with facebook users but its not the most popular with gamers.

Of course Xbone is more popular online, cuz Xboners are using their overpriced cable box to post to Facebook while PS4 users are using their console to play games.

But what type of cheese is more popular with facebook?

ninboxstation

since a "social media" was aksed, which has more likes and where, no suprise the "social media" console Xone (focusing on such instead of games) is more popular...

if we asked "a game media" based site (like gamestop), the answer would not be the same...

of course the x1 is more popular. That's why it's sold over twice as many ps4's...oh wait I mixed them up

So I see a map of blue console gaming consumers and green console gaming traitors.

Microsoft should never, ever, ever be forgiven for what they tried to pull.

@Trickymaster Don't want to ruin your point, but the comments of fanboys here on gamespot suggest that your demographic profile could be wrong.

jameston80

@Mommas_b_o_y and you can't really say twice as many ps4's sold, because Microsoft has not officially announced the latest sales tally since i think it was last year, i don't think they are only at 3 million, i would have to say closer to Sony than you think they are

ninboxstation

@SacredGray

right now, it's still to early to forgive.. but with time we could/should....

like it took me almost the whole PS3 cycle, till I could forgive sony making the PS3 so expensiv, showing off, how powerfull it would, making us pay more for it, when the first games looked worse for a while...... it took 3-4 years, till the grafix could catch up with the 360 resp. till sony could keep their promise.., but they stil made many pay to much for the PS3 during its launch..

now MS did a similar fvck up during it's launch periode and making many pay too much for the console.. (even morse, trying to force us not to buy used games anymore..)

jameston80
jameston80

@SacredGray oh god, here we go again with someone believing that Sony was never gonna do what Microsoft first started out saying.........Microsoft was first out of the gate at 2013's E3, they were 8 hours ahead of Sony, Sony had plans on doing the same thing with used games too, until they saw the flack that Microsoft was getting, so in that 8 hours Sony changed all their policies too so they would make themselves look like the good guys!! So, don't think Sony was gonna do the right thing, because if Microsoft did not get all that flack, Sony would have went the same way, man you are such a Sony Fan bot it's ridiculous, do you have a Sony tattoo on your arm next to your MOM tattoo too?

@prloadude

howmany more?

right now, there are more games out on the PS4... and more PS4 games (3 times as many) have Metascors above 80% than the XO.. since launch day till today..

ninboxstation
ninboxstation

@jameston80

XO is still behind the Wii U in terms of hardware sales..

(PS4 almost 2 mio more than the Wii U, Wii U almost 2 mio more than the XO..)...

jameston80
jameston80

@rorytmeadows @jameston80 @SacredGray yes, Sony did a flip backwards because of Microsofts presentation, but they will never tell you this because they already have you by the balls in you believing that they are there for you, man wake up!! Neither Company is there for the customer, they are both there to make $$$ and lots of it!!!!

ninboxstation
ninboxstation

@prloadude

now MS is crawling back and finally focusing on games.. but at the E3, only Crackdown was new and cool XO game to me...

(btw, most sites state, either Nintendo or Sony won the E3 2014...)

ninboxstation
ninboxstation

@rorytmeadows

PS4 still overtook the Wii U by almost much as the Wii U is ahead of the XO...

(eventhough, the Wii U is lacking multiplatform games..., but by the end of 2015 things could look different between the XO and Wii U..)
