Xbox One is a "more than 10-year journey" Microsoft says

Corporate VP Phil Harrison says upcoming platform expected to have decade-long lifecycle.

by

The Xbox One's launch on November 22 will commence the platform's "more than 10-year journey," Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison said today during his Eurogamer Expo keynote address.

Through a range of features and services, including the cloud, Microsoft will support the Xbox One for more than a decade, Harrison said.

By comparison, the Xbox 360 launched in November 2005 and will be supported for at least three more years, according to Microsoft chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi.

"For us, it's not just about the launch date. It is about the start of the journey where the console will be improved and will be adapted and changed," he said.

Harrison reiterated that Microsoft has 300,000 dedicated servers at its disposal for the Xbox One to support and accelerate features like multiplayer and various networking services, as well as for cloud processing and artificial intelligence.

They'll have to demonstrate their commitment to the XBOX 360 for me to believe this because when the 360 launched, Microsoft dropped support for the XBOX like a hot potato.

If anyone is playing either a PS4 or an XB1 in 10 years I will be shocked.

as usual, comments miss the point. X360 will be supported from 2005 - 2015, as well, according to Microsoft. 360 becomes the budget  machine now. ONE becomes the premium model. Upgrade when you are ready.

A decade ? Wow !

Even being a PC only gamer that doesn't sound fair or right to me.

Hopefully for you console dudes and dudettes they will not take 10 years to make a new console or at least give the option to upgrade.

10 years is a long time in the tech world.

I'd buy a console myself ( for exclusives ) but I can't use a controller to save my life..and I've tried. Even when not gaming my right palm is curved like I'm a holding my mouse.

if someone told me to use even a 7 year old PC to do something as simple as word processing or surfing the web, I'd say, "thanks, but no thanks"  ...  so MS saying they think it's a good idea to keep a 'NON-upgradable' gaming console for 10 years when there will be a Steam Machine that I can own and update and play PC beautiful games on my big screen, I think they need to get some sleep and then have someone explain to them just how quickly specs for new PC games can jump up.

Consoles have been holding back PC gaming this past gen, and now that we are past that nonsense and Valve doesn't have to rely on what MS or anyone else does, I think we will see a huge jump in gaming tech this go around.

I'm a console guy too, but they HAVE HELD BACK THE INDUSTRY LONG ENOUGH... 10 years... please.

"more than 10-year journey"

Both Xbone and PS4 running games sub 1080, no anti aliasing, and at 30fps. Pls no, this generation should be a short gap for whats coming.

10 years of ads and spying :p i don't believe it, im even expecting 360 to die/be killed soon to force everyone to move on.

By support Im sure he means they will keep making them. I doubt it will get support for its last 3 or 4 years much like the 360 didn't get any aside from what 1 or 2 games?

Sony has always prided themselves on fully supporting their systems for 10 years or more, hell ps2 had 2 games come out this and the psp still has games coming out. Its been something sony fans have praised, this to me sounds like Microsoft trying to say they do also in order to also sound committed.

What he means is it will take approximately 7 years until a new console comes out, but will continue to support the platform for another 3 years, much like the 360 will be supported. Atleast that's what he's saying. So it's the same as this generation. Stop hating, what's wrong with you people..

If the technology grows at the rate its growing right now if now faster i don't think they will live longer then 6-7 years because the tech they are using right now in the new consoles is also outdated

10 years is more than enough time for Steam Machines to make a big impact on console gaming. Let's hope Microsoft has more in store for us than cloud gaming and the Windows 8 app store.

It's good they intend to stick with it regardless of success. In the past, certain console manufacturers abandoned their console after less than a year leaving their customers asking why did I buy this?

And Sony  said these words when ps3 came out.

I just hope that Microsoft isn't abandoning the traditional gamer.  I don't want to play with Kinect or use a camera and voice commands.  I don't want to use DVR.  I don't want to use any TV switching feature.  I don't even want to play online or voice chat.  Please Microsoft, encourage classic gaming and reward the third parties that develop for you.  You put so much focus on apps and Skype.  I'm scared that the classic style might shrink.

I think thats too much!
I know that the X1 is capable of going good for 5-7 years but 10?
I only assume that MS thinks the cloud will give it more boost after 5-7 years if the devs find usefull ways to use it when the raw power of the hardware is on limit.
Time will tell.

(Xbox) "helped to usher in the FPS in consoles era."

What are you smoking?

What about games like Duke Nukem 3D? Medal of Honor? All on PS1. LOL.

You can spot an Xbot MILES AWAY.

I don't give a shit about Microscam's Xbone's 10 year journey. Just give us all a 10 year warranty with no bullshit and we're good.

Ah. Microsoft delusional as always.

I wonder what "revised estimates" they'll be making once next gen is over in, like, 2 years? LOL.

well someone's feeling insecure and have to justify himself constantly... Xbone will fail like the first xbox and i am really happy for that. I'm tired of companies with no love for this industry trying to milk it dry just because they now there are stupid people who believe any crap they spit... "we have some crappy ideas for DRM but we have millions of dollars for games" "our console is weaker but we spend a lot of money in servers so we can look cool" "oh and there is the cloud, with the cloud we can go to the moon" like a fu***ng spoiled rich kid who have to buy attention with money because they have no talent or lave for what they are doing. Fu*k Xbox and if you down with them then fu*k you two, muthafu**as' I hit em' up

But seriously, do you really need to sing PR almost every day Phil? Hell can't go a week without you trying to make it sound good.

Ya know...Sony has been quiet, and i wonder why?

Maybe having twice the pre-sales you do in your own country might be it. Or the 3:1 worldwide.

Either way i think this PR is having the opposite effect. Same thing happens when you see politician signs everywhere. You just start to ignore them or get annoyed every time you see them.

WolfGrey

More than a decade eh? I can't help but call BS. As soon as sales start really declining or you feel like making a new console you will.

Then you will abandon the X1 as fast as possible.

@grenade1979 That won't be surprising at all. There are folks still buying and playing PS2 games.  Do you think it's unlikely that someone will still be playing XBOX 360 games in two years?

@Queuingreturns @bunchanumbers MoH had a following but it didn't really become mainstream until Halo. But you know no matter what anyone says no one will ever wash that sony tattoo from your brain. Arguing with you is like trying to talk to a insane person. Like almost everyone else on GS I'm going to ignore your insane banter and wait for the day you get banned AGAIN.

@Trol1yFartsy The first Xbox was a good machine. It was more powerful than the ps2, had a great controller (I don't care what you guys say the Duke controller was great) and helped to usher in the FPS in consoles era. The Xbox may not have been your cup of tea but the machine itself was underrated.

Dr_takapotku

@holtrocks @Dr_takapotku As a PC and a console gamer (a.k.a a TRUE GAMER!!)I hate people like you who have no sense of humor at all. Don't you even realise that you just got trolled?

Trol1yFartsy

@bunchanumbers @Trol1yFartsy I never said it was a bad machine actually jade empire is the best game i've ever played and it was on the xbox, i said it failed and the reason for that it's because microsoft don't have love for the gaming industry and that's why i hope they fail
 again this time

@bunchanumbers @Trol1yFartsy

So what if the Xbox was more powerful than the PS2?

Nintendo 64 was more "powerful" than the PS1.

It all boils down to what GAMERS AND DEVELOPERS WANT.

PS1 had CD. PS2 had DVD. Both VERY popular at the time.

I love Xbots like you. Living in the past as always. LOL.

@bunchanumbers @Queuingreturns sorry to disagree with you here bunch, and i know u are a good gaming fan but man...ur way off with microsoft here.

on your first point...FPS was a genre that really started on PC and pretty much gained console popularity with goldeneye. a couple of WWII themed fps were pretty successful on the ps1 too.

the dreamcast BIRTHED online gaming in the states, not MS. to be truthful there was earlier forays online in asian territories, you could argue that the saturn birthed it in earnest overseas

@bunchanumbers @Queuingreturns

Oh shut up.

Sony have done far more for gaming than Microsoft. PS1, PS2 and PS3 sales combine at 330 million consoles sold. Xbox and Xbox 360 have sold a combined total of only 100 million.

Also, the idea for Xbox Live came from SegaNet. Sega are the ones to thank. Get your facts straight and stay in your place.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@Queuingreturns Yeah and the N64 was a great system too. Many of my favorite games of all time are on the N64. What I'm saying is that its underrated. I know the real xbots are few and far between these days but just calling someone a xbot because they liked the original xbox is a bit of a stretch.

And believe it or not the original xbox was a labor of love. It took 4 guys to convince Bill Gates to enter the gaming arena and if he didn't gaming would look different today.

Thanks to the Xbox online gaming on consoles took off. While yes the live gold paywall now is a perversion of the original idea... it still wouldn't be where it is today without xbox.
